Medicine shortage in Qatar due to reliance on local distributorsPublished: Monday, 28 July, 2008, 01:02 AM Doha Time
The current shortage of medicine in Qatar is a direct result of the lack of logistic capabilities in the region, which stifles manufacturer access and ultimately leaves consumers in the lurch, according to a local logistics expert.
Maher Kheder, business development director at Pharma World Holdings, the first third party logistics company in the Middle East, was speaking in response to a report in Gulf Times earlier this week, which exposed the lack of availability of different types of medicine in Qatar.
He said that international manufacturers rely too heavily on local distributors who do not have the tools, training, financial backbone or updated software infrastructure to handle ever-increasing logistics requirements.
“A portion of the forecasting responsibility needs to be given to the manufacturers, who often don’t fully look into local distributor capabilities. Supply forecasting should be shared, decided and agreed upon by both parties,” he argued.
Kheder said that distributors work on a consignment basis that means placing larger orders involves larger financial outlay. “Many smaller distributors do not incorporate sufficiently sophisticated financial departments to handle increasing demand, and therefore place small orders or let stocks run dry before placing new orders,” he explained.
He also mentioned that small and medium sized distributors do not house dedicated financial specialists to analyse the economics of a region, and thereby fail to accurately forecast its needs.
“Out-of-date IT infrastructure is another major logistic hindrance,” he said, explaining that the latest enterprise resource planning (ERP) support systems mean that all aspects of the logistics process can be constantly monitored.
“The process can be monitored by multiple parties, from multiple locations, at a glance,” he described, adding that “many local distributors do not have the capital to invest in the latest technology, and if they do, these systems are often not used to their optimum.”
Kheder claimed that third party logisitcs companies, which are prevalent abroad but new in the Middle East, are the most effective method of maintaining adequate supplies.
He said: “Our elaborate in-house financial department incorporates analysts who look at and combine local market information to better forecast supply. In the case of medicine shortages, comprehensive networks across the Middle East mean that products are replenished within 24-48 hours – depending on the urgency.”
“Third Party Logistics has the ability to further open up the Middle East market to international manufacturers by easing processes and ensuring supply continually fits snugly with demand,” he added.
They are also trying out the air cushion principle of shopping carts so you don't have to push then anymore based on the hovercraft system only a little smaller. lol lol.
wow thats a good system CB. Wish Qatar can learn from this.
Everybody is right everybody is wrong, it depend where you stand
Bar Code Readings are the best way to control stock of items, and I often wonder how Carrefour deal with this. I watched a TV programme where in Europe the shopping cart can read the bar codes and at the end the cashier just has to take the reading and the cash.
In England they have developed a system that in and Indian Super market chain that when they are low on stock of an item in one supermarket it automatically goes to the warehouse who prepares the stock and a van is sent out within an hour with the necessary goods.
Imagine that here lol lol lol.
so glad to hear that SamyaUK. get better soon
Everybody is right everybody is wrong, it depend where you stand
yes CB totally agree with you. I think is the lack of qualified personel to do the job and this make the whole system slowing down. Qatar you know what you expect???
Everybody is right everybody is wrong, it depend where you stand
Great thanks, how about you?? The office is slow just now everybody out on vacation - traffic is better but still some very mentally patients driving freely through Doha.
Just had my summer crew cut done and am very happy with it.
There is a lot more behind this as just logistics in my opinion, as we get updates on discontued drugs for various reasons it all depends where and how the decisions are made.
Definately all sytems should be under bar code readings this would help the situation immensely.
Same goes for supermarkets and it is not difficult to implement just difficult to find the right staff to update it all and a small investment.
I got given a box of tablets which had "tester" written on the box by the company.. didnt have the normal dose of whatever it was inside.. Kind of freaked me out but im better now :D
hi CB darling, how u doing? i bet your look like bright as sunshine outside.
the logistic here is need to grow and expand. they still using the old method and not qualified personel.
Everybody is right everybody is wrong, it depend where you stand
am sorry about your mom. hope you get the solution in hand. in my case i just have to wait and see
Everybody is right everybody is wrong, it depend where you stand
Interesting subject and as usual the blame is being passed around, in fact when I went to the pharmacy recently - he told me that they were out of Optrex (eye wash) for several months now.
The fact is Pharmacies don't want store medicine that has a short life and may remain on stock and never sold.
My mom is having the same problem too.. it's hard for her to find her eye drops (for treating Glaucoma). We had to order abroad for it.. what's weird is the abundance of pharmacies here but the meds are just limited.
