Metro network coming to Doha soon
Plans are underway to build an extensive metro rail network in Greater Doha. Tram lines are to be laid to complement the transport infrastructure.
The bus network in the city and its sprawling suburbs is also in for massive expansion. A metro light rail network will be developed in three stages and will cover 140km when completed.
Construction of Phase I covering 85km of the proposed rail network is slated to begin next year. The project is likely to be completed in 2015, Qatar said in its presentation for the 2016 Olympic bid made recently.

How is that "soon" 2015 that is 8 years...8 years is not soon
If they can't even sort out the taxi and bus services, they shouldn't even think about metros, tubes, or LRTs. Good luck Qatar.

Metro Construction soon?!!??!!??
I thought before construction came the design of 1)The Coach 2)The Volume carriage capacity 3)The tracks 4)The carrying speed 5)Routes
And before the design comes various data collection (call it studies).
Plus here in the desert the cross wind will also be a factor as it might be an elevated track.
Ideally it should have 3 Routes:
1. Cutting through the heart of Qatar (presently less populated) from Ruwais right to Saudi Arabia.
2. Other should be a Circular route (Harbour route) touching various ports & harbours.
3. The 3 rd route should connect places of Intrest or tourist purpose & Air Port, Bus Terminal & major malls.
Terrific!! I can visualise myself on the train with a cup of hot coffee travelling at 120km plus through the desert sand dunes.
But honestly the Metro is atleast 10 yrs away. Minimum.
Yet another foriegner fast talked the govt into going for the eyesore and impracticably slow trams.
It is well known that all projects takes much longer time to complete than it really require. I don't know why.
But usually every thing here takes so long time. Even when processing paperwork.
A single road or a traffic light may take a year till it is reconstructed. A new bridge takes years till it is completed.
I have been working in Cairo for a year and I witnessed a construction of a new bridge for cars and another bridge for a railway metro and a 2 km underground traffic tunnel , all completed in 6 months.
I think Dubai prjects are built in a short time as well.

There is also a project for the world's fastest Maglev.
It will also be the first maglev to be both above and underground.

Trams are a very effective means of mass transit, they are bringing them back all over Europe. They don't mix very well with traffic tho, and as people here have no patience or lane control I think it could be a disaster, a tram can't squeeze over to get past a fat arsed SUV who's blocking the lane, and so you will have accidents and delays.

Trams are so late 70ish. Sydney has refrained from intensifying its tram network. They have resorted to increase bus frequency and added new routes. Trams are an eyesore. (Melbourne and New Mexico). Either way it will make a dent on the traffic network since it has to run on the already bottleneck ridden 2 to 3 lane carriageways. Take heed and enlarge like abudhabi. They need 4 to 5 laners here. This alongwith better bus services and skytrains will lend a new lease of life to qatar congested traffic scene
the road works is never ending job. They dug up the street outside our compound and havent close it since then (just after the games !)
will they start it before they finish the road works?

They say that they are going to link all the major olympic venues...
In the long run, how important for Qatar is to have metro connections to those outside locations?
They are just trying to compete with Dubai without any concrete planing. Monkey see, Monkey do.
i wonder are they going to leave this for last minutes again. I hear the talk about Asian Games when we arrived in Doha just about 6 and a half years ago. But nothing happening until last minutes.
around 3 yrs ago ... the government closed the muntaza park outside my house. It is said they going to upgrade it with all sorts of facilities. 3 yrs later the park still close ... and nothing happen.
It is said that they will build the latest state of the art of bus stop too ... but so far nothing happening as well. God knows how hot it would be this coming summer would be for the Karwa bus user.
