Mineral water price hiked

QATAR’S residents are hit by the rise in the prices of mineral water in the local market. A number of residents also complained of the shortage in the supply of some brands of mineral water.
The price of most brands in the local market has gone up by a minimum of 10-15% in the last couple of days.
In one case, it went up by as much as 25%.
There are at least four major players in the several millions worth mineral water business. While a 20-litre can of a major international brand was sold at retail outlets for QR8 until Monday, its price has shot up to QR12 thereafter. Following the rise in its price, its sales fell drastically at the retail outlets, said a Najma shopkeeper.
A local brand, which was until recently traded for QR7 for a 20-litre can, increased the price to QR8 from Monday. The manufacturers of this particular brand of water had not increased their prices when some others effected a hike last year, said a retailer.
The other two leading brands, which are selling their 20-litre cans for QR8 have not revised their prices this time. However, when contacted, an official of one of the two companies said if the situation went beyond their control in the coming days, his company too may increase the price of the 20-litre can.
Though the retail price of 500ml bottle of mineral water has not gone up, and is available at groceries for QR1, shopkeepers said they had to pay an additional QR1.50 for a carton consisting of 24 bottles. “However, the suppliers have not increased our commission,” claimed two shopkeepers.
Similarly, shopkeepers said a carton consisting of 12 bottles of 1.5 litres is now dearer by QR1.50. “However, we have been told to sell to customers at the old price of QR 1.50/bottle,” a shopkeeper said.
Inquiries with the manufacturers found that they were forced to effect a hike in their retail prices in view of severe rise in overhead costs. Most of them attributed the rise in prices to increased transportation costs, rise in salaries and increase in the prices of desalinated water for commercial purpose.

RO= reverse osmosis. Ill explain in brief. Osmosis is the process by which a solvent moves from a low concentration solution to a higher concentration solution when separated by a semipermiable membrane, (teflon in most cases). ie for eg is sea water and pure water is separated by a membrane in a vessel, the pure water will move towards the salty water to equal the concentration of salt. In reverse osmosis, this process is reversed by applying pressure which is more than the osmotic pressure to salt water so that pure water from salt water will move to the pure water compartment.

It's filter for the water..

I can not explain it technicaly, but it filter the water so we can drink it. According to the books I read it's better than the bottled water (smaller water particle). However, some bottled water also use the same process.

Maybe someone can explain it better :).
