Mosque with 99 domes taking shape
The State Mosque, an ambitious project launched by Qatar in Al Khuwair, will be one of the largest in the world upon completion, Gulf Times has learnt.
The “Mosque of Domes”, as it is commonly called because of the 99 domes it contains, is large enough to accommodate up to 12,000 worshippers in the main prayer hall, in addition to 8,000 more in the open courtyard, a source associated with the project told Gulf Times.
“It is set to be one of the biggest (mosques) in the world; fifth biggest, I believe,” the source said.
The closely-guarded project is being built under the supervision of the Private Engineering Office at the Emiri Diwan, the source said, adding that the mosque would have traditional Qatari features incorporated into its design, “as opposed to a modern look”.
“It is strictly based on local roots and heritage. There was a Qebab mosque (Mosque of Domes) in Qatar. This project is essentially a larger version of that ancient structure,” the source said.
The State Mosque has 28 large domes, in addition to 71 smaller ones surrounding the open courtyard, totalling 99 in all. Although those involved in the project said they were not given the reason for those many domes, an Islamic scholar yesterday said the relationship could be to the 99 names of Allah.
“The sole minaret, which will also have an observatory overlooking the Gulf, is expected to be 65.55m tall including the crescent,” the source said.
Officials contacted by Gulf Times could not give a timeframe for the opening of the mosque.
Different people gave dates ranging from this November to one year from now.

"Everything in this book may be wrong." Illusions: The Adventures of The Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach
People who doesn't donate from their pockets, talk too much if it comes to others. First look in your innerself, what you have done for humanity and how much you can do. Did you ever spend from your salary for the cause of poor if yes then to what extent, or you satisfied with it? My friends were talking too mcuh without realising how much Qatar is doing with regard to helping poor and needy. The place of worship is not meant for taking snaps nor its tourism spot. Its purely meant for worshipping. If you can build it then why not, what is wrong in that.
When it comes to building our own houses we try to spend as much as possible so that it looks good, don't you? I hope most of my friends will agree with me.
Another landmark? Would have been good to have this somewhere in the heart of the city.
I hope the inside is much more beautiful than the outside because so far it is not very attractive. The Abu Dhabi mosque is absolutely gorgeous.
i agree, it is not mandatory to build 99 domes. i don't think it has 99 domes.as far as i know, it has 28 domes in the prayer hall, 65 in the courtyard area, 1 in the minaret plus 2 domes in the mihrab. so total of 96.
I do hope they open it for respectful visitation. Regardless of denomination well made places of worship I have always found amazing places to visit...

Wow! As if you read the Prophet's Hadith where he said that one day the arrogants will be seen as small as "ants"!
Man you're a genius!
LOL Brit!
Tallg I know, I just wish they'd spend a few of those millions on their people( people who build their country)
Actually it could be a good idea, do they give free food in mosques? or only on occasions?
"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.

I usually sneak in to sleep in a cool sorrounding :o)
Atmosphere? What atmosphere it really creates ? a luxurious atmosphere ! concentration of the worshiper will be on the lights and fittings of the masjid. yes, we are humans !
It all depends on the situation and availability. If there is an air conditioned mosque near my home, i will surely go there. And it doesnt mean that i only pray in an air conditioned masjid !
Eco,
Allah also said many things about lavish spending. dont forget that .

someonenew - Qatar donates millions and millions to charities around the world, both publically and privately.
remember charity increases wealth
and why shouldnt they build beautiful house for Allah?
there is hadith here I will post the reference later
Prophet saws said: Do you want to build yourself a house in Jannah? "The one who builds a house for Allaah in the Dunya, Allaah will build for him a house in Jannah
Britexpat, your comment just shows how much you pray:)
"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.
Mosques are places of worship, teaching and meeting places.
Is it not better if they provide an atmosphere of serenity and peace.
Would you rather pray in an airconditioned mosque, then one with no cooling ?
u said it !!
In Islam, We are not allowed to use/waste more water even when we are taking ablution (Wudhu).

20 000 Muslims coming to the mosque means 20 000 cars parking in front of it. Can you imagine the holy chaos?
I'm not saying that they shouldnt spend money on themselves, aren't they doing that already? I meant that the government should spend money on the more pressing issues. My opinion, u dont have to agree with it.
"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.
AS you said, if it is building to show as a landmark, the intention goes wrong ! Masjids are meant for worshiping !

No One said anything about not building a mosque...
I understand that they want to make a landmark... but they already have so many...
like the museum of Islamic art... this is a good one
the olympic city... its beautiful...
we are just saying that it will be so sad that when we go to friday prayer we will not find that much attendance in that huge space.
in the end, I think they have taken this into consideration, and who are we to judge
A person who does not speak out against the wrong is a mute devil.
lavish spending on mosque...A place of worship and regular prayers.
Isn't this Bidayaa and show off?
Well Tallg and Brit, building a mosque is not like building an iconic monument or building or at least I think so. What I meant is that the buidling(mosque) shouldnt become bigger than the religion itself or that is what I thought Islam preaches.
"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.
able to control ill mannered females.....even if there are shoe racks lazy females spread their shoes all over
tough job ahead
It's ridiculous to say that money should be sent to help poor people before a country spends money on itself.
To be honest , I do not see the linkages here.
If the government can afford to build a mosque for its people and make it as comfortable as possible and a landmark in the process, then why shouldn't it.
Its like saying that a new monument shouldn't be built in India because there are so many living under the poverty line or that the British government should not hold a celebration parade when we have homeless on the streets.
CRESCENT is not symbol of ISLAM
This is exactly like that idiot minister who donated a Rs.43Crore($8.8million) Crown to a Temple(Tirupathi) in India.
"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.

Sorry I said Somalia as if there was nothing wrong in Qatar, well... Yes I agree, Fix the living conditions for labours in Qatar, then spend the rest in Somalia ;)
and why the 99 doms...
How can you distinguish this particular mosque from any other mosque in the world, the 99 doms, its a good idea I believe, but too big for Qatar...
I used to live in old airport area, there are more than 20 mosques in 2 square KM... some mosques are not even used in friday prayer...
A person who does not speak out against the wrong is a mute devil.
Eco-savvy...
Agree, but dont say stupid, just say the crescent...
the crescent is the symbol of Islam
A person who does not speak out against the wrong is a mute devil.
as they have done to Fanar
as they have done to Fanar
Exactly rms! What is the purpose of a mosque? To pray right? How does it matter if it has 99 domes or one? what is the need to seat 20000 people at a time? Are there more than 20000 muslims living around there? Or is it becase they want 20000 people to come to the mosque? Why should 20000 muslims come to that mosque? Becasue it has 99 domes? Is it a holy place that they should visit? But this is like forcing people into going there just to SEE the mosque.
And ochiha, why somalia? they have so many problems in Qatar itself. Like build better accomadation and facilities for the labourers.
"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.
It is not mandatory to build 99 domes to pretain to the 99 names of Allah.
Its an utter waste of money ! thats what someonenew meant !

99 Doms pretains to the 99 names of Allah
I agree, in stead of building a mosque that could take the whole population of Qatar, they could have built schools in a poor country or help Somaila get some peace, or support the people in countires in which have starvation to grow their food.
I beleive that god may award people if they did that better than building a giant mosque in which may never be filled.
A person who does not speak out against the wrong is a mute devil.
Brit- what is the pointof 99 domes on a mosque, what purpose does it serve? Isnt that what Islam tells u not to do? Make the mosque more important than God?
And abt starvation how many human rights problems do Qatar have? What abt the starving and homeless Labourers? I think the whole concept of building a mosque for showing off itself is against Islam.
"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.
I think its a great idea. I expected it to accomodate more than 20,000 people though.
By the way, what linkage is there between the mosque and starvation of people ?
Yes build them mosques and temples, let the people starve!
"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.

DO you really think that this is constructed just for prayers and not for an 'attraction' ?
Then why should they waste so much of money creating 99 domes and interior stuffs an all ? They should have just created a simple mosque if it is just meant for prayers! If people really committed to worship, they even pray in hot sun. I'm sure everyone will atleast go once there for any prayer just to see the masjid.
It will be the same case of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque . People will go there with their camera and take pix and yalla go. i was been to Sheikh Zayed Mosque, and i saw people taking photographs like this that and all. i never feel like worshiping from there. It was just like we are in some other world with that ambiance.

I know it is not only meant for locals, but the area where it is constructed is were most of the locals stay.
Masjids are not built for attraction purpose and people feel nice by seeing it from outside.
It is more attracted if people go there and workship rather then standing outside or passing by.
Masjid's are not meant only for locals.
I think, this place is more attractive than the other. when we are passing through that waadi al sail road, its nice to see the masjid.

This Mosque is not as big or as grand as the Sheikh Zyed Mosque in Abu Dhabi.. When completed, yes it will be another iconic landmark on the Doha scene..

HE WHO DARES WINS
The Masjid near the White palace will be demolished soon, so i guess in tat place they have built this Big Masjid.
The current location for this Masjid has many locals around, May be tat is the reason ? :(
Interesting stuff. I wonder if they will make it open to tourists, like the Grand Mosque in Muscat.
I love the bit at the end; "Officials contacted by Gulf Times could not give a timeframe for the opening of the mosque. Different people gave dates ranging from this November to one year from now."
why are they building this mosque here. i didnt get the reason to why they shifted this project from West bay lagoon to this current location. i think their plan was to build this mosque some where near Intercon or Diplomatic club.
