Mosque in a box. Will it catch on?

"What to do if you're too busy to make it to Friday prayers? An imam in France has come up with just the thing: a portable mosque. There are models for all price ranges, from basic to deluxe.

In today's busy modern world, spare time is an increasingly precious commodity. The same holds true for Muslims as well, of course -- a truth that has prompted an imam in Paris to come up with an unorthodox solution. For Muslims too busy with work to attend Friday prayers at the local mosque, the imam has designed a portable mosque in box that can be used anywhere.

"We can't always drop things in an instant and go out and pray," the imam, Hassmem Bounamcha, told BBC News.

The portable unit is meant to substitute a mihrab, or a prayer niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the direction of Mecca.

Bounachma told journalists in Paris that he has several different models, ranging from a children's version that retails for €69 ($90), to a high-end model, complete with loudspeaker, for €450 ($588). The collapsible units are made from rigid cardboard, Styrofoam, plywood or plastic.

The portable mosques could be particularly useful for Muslim women in France, Bounachma told the BBC, because the impending ban on burqas in that country could result in keeping them off the streets."

masha'allah, you are a patient man... seems a straight forward concept but people on the thread got it all wrong in every conceivable manner :-)

mmm..

I guess he meant well..

But really it doesn't look like something that will bring him much money..

You could pray anywhere as long as it clean.. as we know all the land is God's land.. so wherever you pray.. in sha Allah, your prayer will be accepted..

and the real meaning of praying in mosques for men is to get togather with other muslims and check upon each other...

Women can pray in mosques, but especially for a mother, it would be little hard to go for every prayer.. five times a day.. that's why it's mandatory for men and optional for women..

though also if men weren't able to pray in mosque, they can pray jama'ah which means in a group anywhere, like in their workplaces, malls..etc just to gather a group of muslims and appoint an Imam then pray...

.

sure, no problem,it is started to clear the mistake that this portable mosque could be a replacement for Jumaa"friday" prayer

u r welcome and never mind

I am not actually a Muslim, I am just trying to understand the religion so pardon me if I ask something I shouldn't.

what you are talking about is Jama3a "grouping in prayer,

but for Jum3a it is according to what system you are using "Mathhab"

for Shafii and Hanbali , it should be 40 men

for Malki it should be 12

for Hanafi it can be done by 3 only but one of the three should be able to make imamah.

Got me , because Friday is obligatory to be prayer in a mosque, and i think it is healthy for the community to rebond again.

i remember my fathers' friends when they used to gather after the prayer to chat and check each others, even me and my friends we used to have a small party"food or hanging out or whatever" after prayer

noooo

you misunderstood it

allah will listen inshallah for both prayers Thuhr or friday.

but actually this is to make it easy on people, i mean if you can't find the limit otherwise you will not be sinned if you pray it as thuhr.

got me.

the acceptance between you and God,

By Lafanga• 18 Sep 2010 22:27

That doesn't make any sense. Will Allah not listen to my prayers because I prayed with 38 people and not 40?

By one_shot• 18 Sep 2010 22:25

i told you

suppose you are in 20 persons campaign then you can't do the Friday prayer , Only Thuhr prayer "the regular one"

diamond, those socks do make it somewhat appealing.......hmmmm .

But do those carpets have a compass? I am somewhat challenged when it comes to direction :(

and it only obligatory for men , but for women it is optional,

By one_shot• 18 Sep 2010 22:13

the minimum number of people to make a Friday prayer is 40 people

suppose you are in 20 persons campaign then you can't do the Friday prayer , Only Thuhr.

but here and in our cases we are in the cities so the limits is exceeding by hundreds.

what i mean no one can pray his Friday alone, maybe the regular prayers yes but not the friday

I am curious..

Why must a Friday prayer have at least 40 people ?

cmon guys it is not a replacement for a mosque, it is just to increase meditation and concentration on the prayer while praying.

and adey , Friday prayer must be with at least 40 person.

i don't find any usage for this portable mosque, but it could be helpful when you are camping or while traveling in a road trip, and no mosques around."to protect you from the sun heat" i think.

have many mosques in Doha have a ladies section? I remember that the official announcements of prayers for Eid and Rain etc. stipulated that ladies should pray at home. Has this changed?

I remember stopping on Salwa road and finding stones arranged in a qibla oriented mosque shape just off the main carriageway. It made people closer to God and was of no harm to anyone else!

It would be even better if people so close to God's message were a little bit more active in condemning the injustices they see all around them, rather than concentrating on their own salvation!

i see some utility of it being used as a means of interior decoration, but then why use cardboard? just wall paper would do the job, i don't really see the utility of the portable variety

I just took the title of the thread from the article.....I did add an 'a' for gramatical reasons....thats all.

From the article:

'the imam has designed a portable mosque in box that can be used anywhere.'

if marble is good enough for the haram, then tiles would be good enough elsewhere but the floors would get slippery. Maybe someone could come up with rubber floorings with markings to help devotees maintain saff(lines) as well.

the dull looking prayer rooms like the one's you find in Carrefour and Lulu here even could find this very handy. Wish they could do something about the flooring there too, they are inevitably very musty.

handy way to give the aura of a mosque to a room not otherwise used for prayer purposes say for instance for a friday congregation in an area which does not have a mosque. I guess Muslims have to resort to this when they are not allowed to build mosques in certain areas.

By britexpat• 18 Sep 2010 14:03

This is not a portable mosque.. As the article says..

"The portable unit is meant to substitute a mihrab, or a prayer niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the direction of Mecca."

something like this might be useful for women on journeys specially in countries like Sri Lanka and India where not every masjid has a "ladies" section. In such situations its useful..kind of. Having said that any portable unit even without all the decco would suffice and yes prayer mats are not an obligation and have even been deemed totally unnecessary by some scholars.

Slightly disingenious title here... :O)

He is selling a product , so that Muslims can pray in a "congregation" at home or in other spaces. As Abu says, it is ignorance on the part of Muslims if they think they need this. He is trying to milk idiots for all he can...
