Mothers harder on daughters than sons

drmana
By drmana

Mothers are more critical of their daughters than their sons and let boys get away with more, a poll suggests.
The survey by the website Netmums found mothers were twice as likely to be critical of their daughters than their sons (21% compared to 11.5%).
The poll found mothers were more likely to attribute positive personality traits to their sons than their daughters.
Boys were more likely to be described as funny, cheeky, playful and loving, while girls were more likely to be described as stroppy, eager to please, serious and argumentative.

Can even a mother be biased among her children?

Yes, definitely WOMEN's job is tougher than what men do..:)

When I was a kid if you talked back to your mom, it wasn't mom you had to worry about...it was dad... Mom took care of us, fed us, bathed us, clothed us.... dad was in charge of discipline. The best way to get into it with dad was to be disrespectful, rude, or unthankful to mom... The punishments ranged from slap in the mouth to spankings... and they hurt... I was afraid to talk back to my mom, and she loved my sister and I equally. She did not do much of the disciplining, but I can say my dad went to great lengths to give out equal punishment... I got no favoritism...

All moms love as hard as they can, I think we as kids tend to see it only from our prospective...

When I was a child I thought as a child, but now as an adult I understand, dad worked as hard as he could to make sure mom could stay home and raise us properly... and mom stopped everything she was doing in her life so she could raise us properly... I could never be a mom it is far to hard...

In the yesteryears girls were held to different standards than the boys. But lately, parents see no difference between a boy and girl.

The reason mothers may be harder on the girls could be because she has multiple roles to fulfil compared to a man. Men are mainly seen as bread winners. But girls have put on multiple hats- daughter, sister, wife, mother, and nowadays career woman. It's ain't easy managing a home and work. So unless she has been well equipped or "toughened" up she might not be able to meet the challenges. Failure is not an option mothers would like their daughters to face.

rishi, just watch it out man..the days are not too far when the girls would also start performing the last rites of their parents....:))

I think i need to start it first...:)

By soniya• 6 Oct 2010 18:06
soniya

tinker, and that's what i try to balance it out with my IN-LAWS too..if i do one thing for my parents, i do it DOUBLE for them..u better know the reason why...:))

I have always been a SON for my parents and would continue doing same..

I am so strong headed person, that even my siblings rely on my decisions..lol

By anonymous• 6 Oct 2010 18:01

i agree fully with you guys...but its actually the traditional thinking based on the those days still carrying on in the minds of the people.

it will take some time for this inertia to reverse..

By soniya• 6 Oct 2010 17:52
soniya

tinker, how true...infact my parents too rely on me than my bro...though my bro isn't of that type but still who knows the future once he too gets married off and his WIFE creates problem at later stage....

By soniya• 6 Oct 2010 17:47
soniya

rishi, but the scenario has got changed today...Girls are more protective and caring for their parents than the boys evenif they are married off..don't u think so???

By soniya• 6 Oct 2010 17:44
soniya

tinker, hope these researchers should involve themselves in other constructive work rather than putting out the BIASED surveys...

By soniya• 6 Oct 2010 17:43
soniya

Let's just not carried away with these kind of research...Few researchers have nothing else to do in their life other than doing such baseless surveys...

I've always been close to my MOM...I have received all kind of pampers from her other than my siblings..Infact it was me who has got all her LOVE, FEELINGS, EMOTIONS and what not..My bro was always sidelined...:)))

I too have a baby GIRL...And would love to have one more girl rather than having a BOY..I am not harsh with my baby and don't think i would ever be...

By anonymous• 6 Oct 2010 17:40
anonymous

i agree its pathetic...but cant help.

sometimes, the parents think probably the son would help them later in the old age whereas the daughter would be married off..and because of this reason, they dont wanna displease their son.

on the other hand, if a daughter is married off, the old parents lose a part of family earnings...they fear that.

By drmana• 6 Oct 2010 17:38
drmana

rishi, that concept may be true in our part of the world with joint family concept but not applicable worldwide. Hence, that can't be the reason for the outcome of this survey.

By anonymous• 6 Oct 2010 17:32

the one who earns or is likely to earn some money for the household is always pampered more..

like it or not but thats the truth in most families..

Perhaps it's because mothers want to prepare their daughters for the harsh world outside.

My mom was more biased towards our sister than us brothers.. Both of us had her palm print frequently on our face but we never saw the same on my sister's face :P

LOL just kidding did not know that we had a 3rd doctor on QL. lol tinker

By drmana• 6 Oct 2010 16:35

tcom, I wouldn't have become a doc without moral support from both of my parents. Its not about depriving daughters of opportunities. Read the full article first. It says when having both son and daughter, mothers seem to ignore mistakes by son more often than that of daughter.

Regardless of the gender parents should treat them equally. Having said that there are significant risks involved in upbringing of a boy and a girl which parents should realize throughout the life and adopt a positive approach with respect to children's age and situation.

should stop these studies and researches, millions of dollars being spent on that, what a waste of money and time.

By drmana• 6 Oct 2010 16:09

baldrick, I agree. Most of the studies are useless any way. I think they are just twisting words of Mothers to get the desired outcome in survey.

There are lies, damned lies and statistics. Figure can be turned round any way you like, especially when it comes to sensationalizing journalism.

21% compared to 11.5% also becomes 79% to 88.5% if you look at the converse - not a big difference any more is there!?!?!?

By gudone• 6 Oct 2010 16:05

but i think, in ths present world, both son and daughter shud b cared & protected equally .... in olden days only girls were tortured/misbehaved by strangers.... but world is worst now..

my wife think the boys are angels, yet I think they are devils.

By drmana• 6 Oct 2010 16:02

Even I have seen that mothers pamper their son more while daughters are close to their father. But that doesn't mean being tough or harder to the other one I think.

By bubblymom• 6 Oct 2010 16:01
bubblymom

maybe because they are more protective on their daughters.

By gudone• 6 Oct 2010 16:00

harder to daughters ??>> but have seen moms more caring their sons...

but personally i dint have tht discrimination from my mom...

drmana, I don't know if this is true, as I only have a daughter,.. but if in the future I ever have a son, I don't think I will be biased.. I will treat my children equally..
