Hello

I'll be in Dubai for a few days..
Can anyone tell me what I should expect ?
Is it very different from Doha ?
Can I dress the same here or are there restrictions?
What are the locals like ? I hear that they are very insular and nasty.

Please advise me so that i can adjust quickly..

"I will not leave my eing man"

OK>>

Haven't seen many Landcruisers.. Do they only come out at night ?

Perhaps I'll ask my Cuban Shot Putter to join me here. Is it easy to get visas for "friends"

Expect to spend 4 to 5 hrs of your daily life in road, pay a lot of money as parking fees, spend hrs searching for a parking, pay hell a lot of money as road tax (salik), go to shopping malls and come back since there are no parking lefts and spend lot of your income in night clubs. If you ever meet a living local in Dubai, please let me know.

OK... Ibn Batuta Mall is a LOT better than Villagio..

Its a bit artificial for me, but the ambiance is great as is the different architecture.. Throngs of people of all shapes and sizes..

Food courts offer a lot more variety..

NOW.. I wonder if I can walk down the promenade holding hands with a female of the opposite sex ?

Well, I'm goint to take a walk from my hotel now.. I have heard that you have to be careful, especially near women ..

I'll let you know how I progress..

Absolutely...mingle away. Someone misled you. They must be talking about Texas. Now those people are insular and nasty. Locals in Dubai, on the other hand, are quite the opposite.

Cheers

Sorry , forgot to say . One of my favourite "Must Do's", is to cross the creek on an abra, or even hire one to take you a trip down the creek,,,,,I dont know why but I always loved that little trip back and forward on the abras.

I hope you are staying inside the city as traffic is a nightmare. Lots to see and do. Much busier than Doha.

Theres a good pub style bar in the Holiday Innn Crowne Plaza, good food, very reasonable prices, nice staff and a good eclectic mix of clientelle,,,,,,no Chinadolls.

Locals are a bit more reserved certainly , but in my experience very friendly indeed , especially if you are the one to initiate a conversation ,more like shy I always thought.

Hope you enjoy yourself.

Do the following

1. if you are driving you better rent a car... taxis are really expensive

2. this follows the first point, if your driving, you better bring a GPS, roads are really complicated, and you could easily get lost or miss a flyover in which may cause you to drive an extra 15 KM. (been there done that)

3. if you dont have a friend's place to stay, you better settle for at least a 4 star hotel because 3 is horrible

4. fly Emirates not QL, because if you do Qatar Airways, you will have to do the eyeprint scan which takes a hell lots of time (Goes for everyone, no one is special)

5. If you want to go for a tour, you better do it through an Agency, do not roam around as if you know the country because you will waste hell alot of time in traffic wondering around. (done that then I found a brochure in Emirates mall ( it only costed 170 riyals) and they would have shown you everything).

6. the best malls are Ibn Battoota Mall and Emarites malls, the rest are ordinary, you should visit the Festival city at the sunset, it is wonderful.

7. Skiing is wonderful at Emarites mall, try it...

8. Jumairah Beach is wonderful (white sand) but I guess

9. you better also visit the golf club.

as I said before GPS is highly Recommended

its a bit cold now.

Lots of things to do...

A person who does not speak out against the wrong is a mute devil.

No worries mate! There are so many good clubs there, but save those for the night time...that's when things really start heating up!

During the day, hit any corner, at any time and you will find an array of people. There are drinking establishments everywhere!! If the selection is not to your liking on one corner, just cross the street. I am sure that you will find several people to meet and greet.

It's all good.

For starters, you do not have to show your passport, everyone is welome, no questions asked.

Secondly, men must wear their skirts short and tight. The skirt must be at least 4" above the knee (no lower please). Do not worry about shaving your legs. The hairier the better. Your shoulders must be exposed.

Muscle shirts are recommended...and it doesn't matter if you have muscles or not.

Next, pork is served, with a smile, everywhere! There are bars on every corner. (bars replaced the coffee shops) Indulging in alcohol is encouraged. So, drink up!

Finally, if you wish to exercise, let me recommend skiing in Dubai. Swoooosh!

You will have a great time! But hurry back anyway!

Yo will love the high rise buildings, world class huge shopping malls... in short Dubai is a Most beautiful city in the region.

You should expect traffic jam. But recently I heard that Govt. of Dubai has taken some measures to ease the traffic.

No the majority of the locals are highly educated and very respectful. Most of them speak English and Urdu since these 2 languages are very common there.
