Is this the new Earth?

Astronomers tonight announced the discovery of the most Earth-like planet ever found - a rocky world three times the size of our own world, orbiting a star 20 light years away.
The planet lies in the star's 'Goldilocks zone' - the region in space where conditions are neither too hot or too cold for liquid water to form oceans, lakes and rivers.
The planet also appears to have an atmosphere, a gravity like our own and could well be capable of life.

The problem, supeesh is, that NOTHING can even reach the Speed of Light for a simple reason: To accelerate an object travelling at 99% of the Speed of Light you need more energy THAN THE WHOLE universe contains.

another earth.. therez a lot more 2 b discovered... only God(Allah) Knows..

only the matter of time dear friends.....

now max speed a man can travel is 19,000 miles/sec

but the speed of light is 186282.3971 miles/sec

so, as per today's technologies it will take around 200 years. (196 yrs and some days.)

or you can wait another 10 years in earth, so that we will invent something which will travel 40 times the speed of light. so that it will take only 183.24 days to reach there.

if they invent something more faster than 40 times, then it will take less days...

so..

its better to wait...

if evolution is true , there could be life also , but it may not be like ours

Nothing to do with intelligence I'm afraid.. just like reading about useless things :O)

lol brit, you could be a great astro physicist...i wish i had the intelligence like yours..:)

Interesting discovery, however, the key is whether any sign of life? It's purely dependent of the atmospheric composition with the prevailing conditions.

The theory is simple.. Create a bubble, shrink space and travel in the "fold" or hyperspace :O)

brit, i could never understand the Alcubierre's theory..it seems so unreal..

anyways, lets wait, as you said.

NGTD, you bet, that would be a much better vacation i guess..:)

LOL rishi. I would better think about a village in south India with river, falls and mountains :)

Just waiting for the arrival of the hyper drive based on Alcubierre's theory. As soon as that happens.. I'm off.

In the emanwhile, we should focus on under sea exploration..

based on the information, what i feel is...

- since the planet is about 3 times the earth's diameter, the mass of the planet should be near to 27 times that of earth. thus, the gravity would be near to 27 times that of earth too. so, it would probably be difficult to move around there.

- the highest temperature is about -12 deg celcius, and if water exists, it would definitely be all frozen under the high atmospheric pressure. since water is the lifeline of living beings, it would be diffficult for life to begin.

-its 20 light years away, so it would take generations to reach there for a person...hypothetically, if a male and a female start for the planet today, their fourth or fifth generation might land there someday..

so, guys who are making plans to spend their vacations there...just think about a place on earth...:)

I love the name they gave the zone..

A quick prize for guessing why. :o)

Avishai: the planet is Glieseg...... I will be ready to travel as soon as they have perfected the art of cyogenics ..

Great stuff. It's early days. As the article says, there are probably a lot more such planets in the "zone".

As propulsion technologies change, we might yet one day be able to send a manned craft to the planet. One day, man will have to leave the earth - for good :O(
