The new "old" me
By Tigasin321 •
Good morning everyone. I realised this morning that I was struggling to fit into a suit that just a year ago hung off me. Further examination showed that I have gone from a 30 inch waist to a 32 inch waist in just one year.
One year ago I was a slim fairly atheletic non smoker and moderate drinker. I now look like a fully paid up member of the "Garveys Race". Has anyone else had a similar experience?
So what's the plan? Very simple. In management consultant speak it is a 3 step plan commencing 1 July.
1. Give up smoking
2. Gym three times per week
3. Detox diet
I am going to need some help. Anyone care to join me?
I'm thinking.....Pounds 'R Us...whaddya think?
Ohh geez, King..don't encourage me to talk...it doesn't take much to get my mind started cause then the mouth begins to operate without consulting the brain. Result----> Foot in Mouth Disease.
to hear that and I don't mind if you will modify my posts to update it with more useful tips. Maybe the next get together we would discuss about our new business [The Gym] hehehee. Could not make it to Rydgez last Friday, was supposed to come but something happened.
Just go ahead and post more, .. so we would have more to talk about next gathering.
poor you Richard - I think I gained a stone or so since my arrival. Must go to gym
Must go to gym
Must go to gym
Must go to gym
Must go to gym
Must go to gym
Must go to gym
Must go to gym
Must go to gym
- I took the blue pill and found myself alive in Qatar - wish I had taken the red and stayed in Europe
out of clips...although, I LOVE the smell of baking bread...its alcohol. Darn all those empty calories...
Was right where I wanted to be, bodywise, a year ago, then started school and it stressed me out, so my flatmate and I, (she went to the same school), would go out for dinner at this one restaurant, sit at a table overlooking the bar area, split a meal, and drink one glass of wine, while watching the men play pick up chicks... Well, the bartender who was there, thought we were funnier than the guys picking up women and she would send over free glasses of wine..and of course, being the nice mannered person I am, couldn't refuse such hospitality, so drank them..therein lies my downfall...
went to go look and dang if this one didn't erase itself...I'm learning...
King, you got the right stuff going buddy!!! Want to start a gym together??? LOL Sorry I cut and pasted a bit of your earlier post and added a bit of mine to it..
1- Drinking coffee- he's right about this one..actually is also a diuretic, which strips the body of potassium, which if you drink enough of it, will cause muscle cramping, not to mention messing with your electrolytes. This is the reason when you drink a lot of coffee, you'll be in the toilet weeing all day. So..for every 8 oz cup you drink, replace it with 2 cups of water. Tea and diet soft drinks are the same as coffee, sorry folks they don't count as water!!
2- Having a perfect breakfast-AMEN to this one!!! Skip the bacon (ok so THAT'S not an issue here!)
3- Doing some exercises early in the morning for like 20 - 30 minutes - dead on about this one.
4- Drinking warm water in the morning with some drops of a lemon would also help - actually it does help in losing weight but its all water weight only. It does get the liver and kidneys functioning. Take a 16 oz water, heated in the microwave for a min(take the lid off the bottle folks or it could get exciting!), add 1/2 lemon. Watch out for the temp...it CAN get HOT!!!
5- Follow a 5 days training schedule it is more effective than others.(yes, yes, yes...)
6- Don't quit on eating, your body will get into starvation mode and anything you will eat would be a disaster because your body feels like it is in danger, starts converting anything you eat into fats.(YEAH KING!!!) It actually starts storing what little you do eat and messes up your metabolism totally. I've worked with people who were eating only 1000 cal per day and gaining weight. They'd screwed up their metabolisms so bad from lack of calories.
7- Drink water to get extra water out...yep make like a camel...drink up!! One more thing...don't drink TOO much water either...that can mess up your electrolytes and you have the same issues
8- Sleep early, nothing would create a problem and disturb your body like a bad sleep. ---I'll add in, don't sleep late if you stayed up the night before partying...it will throw your metabolism off. You can't catch up on missed sleep, your body doesn't work that way.
Hmm Good listener hmmm u did as i said now do one more thing get a clip for ur nose coz u always go mad when ever the Delicious scent of food reaches ur nose and u cant control. :D

Majh, I've tried talking to him, telling him that we want him to live longer, do it for the sake of ur kids, etc, but it's not working. He's not a big smoker, so I kind of accepted it because it's his stress reliever and it has to come from him, as much as I talk to him he won't listen if he doesn't want to quit. Fingers crossed his "revelation" comes soon!
I ALWAYS follow instructions...cough cough, yeah right...
have u tried the smoker's patch?
that was just to keep u healthy and full of energy and a power house :D
but u got extra weigh i asked for 15kg and u went for 45kg :/
[img_assist|nid=21285|title=.|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=180|height=180]
Scarlett , Thanks I got it now.
but it took a heartattack to get either of their attention. I even used to draw a line halfway up the cigarette so they could stop there..cut the end off the cigarettes..etc...but no good...has to be their own decision, just like the weight or getting in shape has to be...
to begin with..had you not told me to eat dinner at my function then eat again at Rydges, I wouldn't be in this predicament! Shame on you!
walking action without the pounding damage that can occur when you run or walk. Its much better for your joints and is still a weight bearing exercise. Detox diet...there are many of them out there. Basically they work to clear your system of any toxins that can slow your metabolism down.
I tried to get my dad to stop smoking...no use...even though his father had one of lungs removed due to smoking!! Any suggestions? I doubt he'll listen, but worth a try.
I know 3 places to drive to so far...working on others!
& what is elliptical machine?
Could anybody please care to explain?
Damn J, definitely can't beat that! Join our slimming group :D
mainly your hands and mouth..both are used for smoking and that's part of the habit. Break that part or otherwise occupy it and that's half the battle. Just don't use food as a substitute. both my parents quit and used that method. If you have to use something use the Nicoderm to get you through the day...nothing wrong with that at all.
Give you some incentive...my dad had a massive heart attack 25 years ago, and he barely made it. Cardiologist said he was about 20 pounds overweight and smoking but...the weight didn't matter as much as the smoking did. Said the weight could wait(sorry folks!) but for every cigarette he smoked, he tripled his heart rate, which wore out the muscle. Evidently the contractions with the lack of oxygen from the smoke make for a VERY bad combination.
went from waist 29 to 36 in the 8 mnths i've been here!,... ny1 to beat tht???

The Moevenpick is opposite the Four seasons, on West Bay. No idea how much they charge, but I can ask later today...
Hi everyone,
I love Richard123's plan....but i am somehow stuck with number 1..how can u really quit? i did years ago...and went back in less than 6 months...besides losing weight and quitting r a great healthy upgrade with one flaw...once u quit smoking u gain weight...so i would suggest this ,get rid of the extra weight, then quit...?
any ideas?
This is gonna be tough. I am not really trying to lose weight, I just need to tone up. Will my new regime one week from today and will let you know how I get along.

Damnit no hint of guilt here lol...where is the guilt ???
Will tell you about something here :) :
1- Drinking coffee that got caffeine in there would always prevent your body from losing weight. It is irritating the Pancreas and asks it to inject more insulin in the blood, that won't help you in losing weight. It would help you in getting the water inside your body out.
2- Having a perfect breakfast will provide you with energy all the day and will help you also in losing your weight.
3- Doing some exercises early in the morning for like 20 - 30 minutes will provide you with an amount of energy for like 2 - 3 hours daily.
4- Drinking warm water in the morning with some drops of a lemon would also help, it does not help in losing weight like most of people do believe .. it would help your liver in getting cleaned of the different harmful and poisonous substances there ..
5- Follow a 5 days training schedule it is more effective than others.
6- Don't quit on eating, your body will get into starvation mode and anything you will eat would be a disaster because your body feels like it is in danger, starts converting anything you eat into fats.
7- Drink water to get extra water out, your body is storing water inside because you are not drinking enough water, it is trying here to establish a balance between the amount of salts that you got there and that is why when you eat without drinking water, your body will get extra Sodium inside and to balance that amount it will store water everywhere in your body. When your body feels that it gets enough water, it will automatically release all of this extra water ... no need to torture yourself with Sauna and other stuff. Drink a cup of water after the Sauna and ooops I'm fat again.
8- Sleep early, nothing would create a problem and disturb your body like a bad sleep.
Wish that it helped man, .. got more for you here .. but this much is enough i guess :)
ur punishment to lose 15 kgin 1 week. Decree issued. YES. And plz dont appeal. :)

not working out today...so, I'm off to the machine to sweat some of the guilt out...(and here I thought no one could make me feel guilty!!! LOL)
moevenpick? and how much are they charging for memberships?
I'm staying at the hotel, so I go to the gym quite often anyway. One of the instructors told me they just opened up for members, and that they're running promotions. Part of it is that if you join now, you won't pay till July.
I like their equipment, and there's always staff around to help you out with your training program. They're also going to start aerobics lessons. But I haven't seen any other gym in Doha, so not quite sure how they compare.
to the individual person as to what they do or not do. When I am in a mind to lose weight and get in shape..I still go out, I just choose not to drink or eat off my plan. Yep, I get ribbed about it, but in the end I am happy with who I am and that I am a strong enough person to do as I like. I can't imagine never speaking to my parents, ok my mom, since my dad passed away 6 years ago. Believe me, when you lose a parent(friend, sibling, spouse), you'll have wished you talked to them. That's something you can NEVER replace..time spent with people you love. Spitefulness is self abusive...only hurts the person being spiteful. One last thing...when you have that championship belt, will you be happy all alone??? or will you wish to have someone in which to share your joy?
Hello there...
What is the special offer for the Movenpic??
I hate going to gyms - tell me anyway though!
Ahmed you ok mate??? think u r on the wrong thread.
Ohh fiddledeedee.....
hand in hand...better than fist to mouth, which is what most of us have been doing here in Qatar! The bread..oh my
You met Bridge the other night. Overweight she's not.

You need to stay away from the people who drag u there, if u didnt care about your health and physique then it wouldnt matter u could keep partying with them, but if its really important to you which it obviously is then u need to seperate yourself from the "group" because beleive me everyone is with you when its time to have fun but if god forbid anything happens to u then you wont find any of them there to help u.
I'm a professional athlete and in such a negative place such as Qatar where people only care about making money and then partying their misery away on weekends it pretty much meant i needed to eliminate social life completly if i was to get anywhere.
I dont even speak to my parents and we live in the same house!! Because they are Qatarized that its second nature for them to put me down or discourage me when they see me trying to be healthy or exercise.
Yeah sure its a lonely way to go, but who will be the flabby loser in the end? and who will be holding the championship belt?
but the three does sound good. But argue with this if you can. 5 Reasons why Dutch people are cool.
1. The Dutch invented New York
2. The Dutch invented Amsterdam (and its special cafes)
3. The Dutch invented Dykes (both types)
4. Erasmus was Dutch
5. Van Gogh was Dutch
See 5 not 3.

are overweight or not, right? And what's more..you don't care??
Hmmm...what's the ice-cream diet?
a group of us together to get fit! As long as there are no Gym Bunnys in site they scare me. Last time i went to the gym i went on a excersie bike but couldnt figure out how to raise the seat on it, i got all embaressed at myself and left and never went back! And i had signed up for a year - or theres the step aerobic class i joined but kept falling off the step and they would stop the class and stare at me! Im no good at this excerzise yet!!!
butterfly ( sorry different note ) have you dropped yet - i was wondring the other day!

love life!
I even hire a personal trainer when I want to get back into shape for just that reason..get my rear in gear and back on track! Last time I lost weight (which stayed off 6 years, thanks to working out!) I lost an extra 5 pounds, which made me look anorexic, to which all my friends very quickly told me!) but I was going on a cruise and I wanted to "eat" my way back up to my regular weight..lol Which, I did...and man was it fun! Now that I'm getting older, working out is a necessity for weight loss and even just to maintain my weight. Tell you, getting older just stinks at times!
I'm almost through my last pack of cigarettes, and I haven't found my brand anywhere around here, so I may join you in giving up smoking, I'm already in the gym six times a week (Moevenpick gym, they have a promotion now to take on new members...) but a detox diet sounds horrible!
Let me give you some of my favorite diet suggestions instead:
1. The vodka diet (works wonders)
2. The icecream diet (especially in summer here it seems a good choice)
3. The tuna diet (works really well, but is pretty hard to stick to)
Goodluck!
Excellent observation there Richard
In my experience unrequited means quite dramatic weight loss...
but mutual falling in love should make you lose a few kilos...
you're too busy to cook and it is very exciting.
just make sure you buy low fat whipped cream :)
Been here grand total of 3 weeks and i can see the weight piling on already - the fresh bread here is tooo lovely.......so My atkins resolve has died..............
If anyone likes aerobics, or similar - I would be cool with that as well !!!
woohoo that's great scarlett, so will u yell at us and force us to excercise? please please say yes! lol, the thing is with me is that I start a diet and working out for 2 weeks and it's going great and then something like vacation or exams, etc. screws it all up and I'm back to square one. I need strong motivation, and determination (which I'm lacking) *sigh*
a major US weight loss program..no, I'm NOT mentioning names..Be glad to help whoever wants help.
sounds like a good solution.Does it have to be unrequited to lose weight though? If so, the gym is a less painful option.

I'll be able to do some things but not the shoulder stuff. I managed to tear my rotator cuff back in March and have surgery scheduled for Aug...so my left arm is kinda limited( I swim in circles...lol)! but I can work out everything else (which definitely needs it!) I'm not opposed to joining a gym, so let me know what all you guys are doing.
this is depressing me. I´ll soon have to lose so much weight as well.
*sight*. How about starting an sliming group? I´ll be joining as soon as I have my son and have doctors ok to diet.
You're in. I am serious about this by the way. Not like my previous pathetic efforts like running on the Corniche (yeah right). We have a real phys ed teacher to help us. Come on Scarlett, put us on the right path.
Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary. Mahatma Gandhi
have other equipment here at the house. Figured it was cheaper and easier than having to drive to a gym. Besides...this way I don't have to go to the gym in pants, change clothes into shorts, work out, change clothes back into pants..then drive home...lol Ok so I'm lazy in that department! Do you belong to a gym? the only one close to me is the Ritz..haven't checked it out, but I did the Sheraton when I was here in Sept. and it has an incredible gym for a hotel.
Charmed..join us, misery loves company!!! The more people we have groaning in pain, the better!
Richard drink stronger coffee and smoke more cigarettes and chew gum to curb your appetite.
Failing that go on holiday to Cancun and do what quite a few other gringos do to lose weight and have fun - go dashing through the snow
or you could fall in love.. thats a good way to lose weight... its the adrenelin.
Don't let me get started on putting on weight in this country! I've gained alot of weight, cause all everyone seems to do is either eat or drink! What gym are u guys joining? I need to start working asap, what about swimming? It's excellent excercise.
over to you on this. Do you belong to a gym? I am ready to start next week. Charmed, feel free to join us. Fat people on Dr Phil is not a new thing. Fat sane people on Dr Phil. Now there's a thought.
Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary. Mahatma Gandhi
foods here. Certainly would be easier if I didn't like Middle Eastern food! Let me know how Dr Phil works out for you...I could use a fortune also...
my waist seems to be increasing day by day since i moved out here, soon i will have to walk through doors sideways as i wont be able to fit through!
gave up the alcohol - still putting on weight
gave up smoking - put on weight - started again to lose weight - put on more weight
tried cutting out the junk food in my diet - still putting on weight!!
i have given up and decided to see how fat i can get, then will write a book about getting fat, will go on doctor phill cry about it then go to fat camp too lose it - finally will make my fortune.

love life!
Ohh the things we can do when we put out minds to it...
Phys ed, which is why I enjoy working out so much. Course, seems I forgot all that last year! lol I really dislike getting BACK into a routine but sure feels great when you do! I actually get addicted to working out...weird, I know but is better than some other addictions I could get into! Reason for the 5 times a week is that if I take a day off, its too easy for me to take 2 days off, then 3...
You are all ahead of me. Gym five times a week is a bit much. Seems that if we commit to three times we have a good chance of sticking to it but more than that is a bit much. Okay Greeker and Scarlett lets do it!
Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary. Mahatma Gandhi
the game right there!(ok I'll be honest..only smoke when I've had several drinks) Mine's the alcohol...dang that puts it on FAST!
My 3 step program is
1) cut down on amount of alcohol consumed
2) gym 5 days per week, min of 30 min cardio per session plus light weight lifting.
3)low fat, no sugar...(no fun!)
I intend to miss the Doha Dozen!!!
This is what works for me...last year was a killer for me since I was in school and didn't have time to work out (or so I told myself!) those extra 15 pounds aren't in the right places!!! so...my steps started two days ago...Keep telling myself..I really enjoy this, I really enjoy this...(yeah, right!)
DO hard exercise after sleep and before wake up.That is the best solution.
Gym 3 times a week is not really enough ;-)....4 would be ok.
I know you're probably thinking, what the hell its only one day it wouldn't make a difference, but trust me it does!!
eat as much as you want but....avoid food cooked with oil, or basically any fat.
that should do ;-)
oh yeh...cut down on the beer!
1) i dont do and 2) and 3) sounds as if its tailored for me. But i am going home in a months time and i would like to join you after that. Though my work would interfere, i would like to give it a try, If not, just for the heck of it, even...
