New radars set to catch rogue Doha drivers

By SDJC

Traffic cops in Doha are set to introduce a new radar system on main roads to catch drivers who try to beat the existing system.

The Traffic Department is planning to bring in a point-to-point system to monitor motorists who tend to speed up immediately after crossing a radar point.

They will be caught by the next radar, installed at a distance of three or four kilometres, Col Mohamed Marafi, Safety, Planning and Radars in-charge said in comments published by The Peninsula on Thursday.

It doesn't make any difference to some people, as they know how to deal with it one way or other....

Very intelligent people who make limits.

Must be from other country not Qatar.

Drivers what I see 2 years ago and today

is the same problem.

And Im not racist. Just writing the true life

things open in forum without any personal or

national way. Ok.Where I get statistics dont ask

me I will not tell you.

1. Most of people who never drive car in his country like India making 80 % incidents say statistics in Police Doha. (and this is true I see every day who is involved when I passing by)

2. Most limit over speed is Qatari people, then Jordan, Lebanon and so on...Indians is here just 8 %

3. The most dangerous drivers and accidents make Qataris very rude drivers who have more then 20 NON payed violations. Why? No comments. Check some license when someone pass by near you and you see. They don't pay.

Conclusion ??

Until Qatar police don't push all people to pay violations nothing will change.

In Europe for people who make 3 or more hard violations payment is triple and after court sell the car and money goes to government. Small car Fiat or Ferrari no difference.

LAW EQUAL FOR EVERYONE.

The first time I heard about this new system of Radars I didn't believe its real! but now after I read how it works it became a night mare!

The speed limits are weird in qatar! You have crowded areas with speed limit of 100 and you have high ways (like the one near the new airport and the new highway from naser to hilal with only a speed of 80! its a highway for god-sake! it should be at least 100!

Radar cannot see what the road conditions are, just to get out on the main road near my house I have to really accelerate as the traffic is going 100 and when someone is coming up too fast behind me or I feel in danger I have to speed up to get out of their way I get a ticket for that 20 seconds of trying to get in the right lane. I am beginning to think this is just Qatars way of making some revenue as you all stated they don't do anything to recklace drivers that kill others.

Don't understand why they don't bring the speed limit right down in conjunction with so many other things which can be done.

100 km/h should be not more than 60 and 80 should be 50. At least that way many ppl feel a lot more secure and happy.

For goodness sake 100 km/h in urban area is similar to those of motorways in some European countries!!

Nothing is more relaxing than flying like an Eagle in Heaven !!

its becomin redicilous!! thats OVER! they r gettin so silly. and yeah accidents happen mainly bekoz drivers are bad and because drivers r not educated enough to drive safe...u cant just keep drivin 80 on under passes ...

Stupid. Speed is not the problem. Its poorly made roads and laughable driver's training they have here.

Some parts of the autobahn in Germany has no speed limits and accident rates are some of the lowest in the world.

Regarding different speeds on the same road I totally agree with you. But unfortunately on your second comment I must disagree. I have one of those big SUV's you mentioned, I'm western and I respect the law. The main reason I bought such a big car was for safety, I don't know if it's really safer but that's the way I feel it. And I see all the time many small cars (tidas, altimas, etc) and all kinds of nationalities driving as fast as anyone else, maybe they look slower than SUV's because they are smaller, but that's all. And having different fines based on the type of your car... cam'on, we already live in a unfair country, let's not make things worse! Cheers.

Put in real time cops- not electronic cops- on the roads to apprehend speedsters, and drivers using their mobile phones. And let it be cops who can implement the law without favors!

Speeding alone is not the issue. Police need to crack down on wreckless local drivers. If you wish to go ahead and kill yourself fair enough, but don't invlove me. Police also need to address the number of idiots who drive around with babies in the front usually in the mums lap.

its a cultural issue, you need to start with the young kids at schools and spread the awareness culture, money with ignorance will result in disasters.

I have to say until, the curruption in government departments where a friend can help ;) Nothing will change as by far the worst group of drivers get away with it.

itz nice 2 keep radars & reduce accidents.....but i am sure arabs are gonna find a way to trick this.....how much money will the government be getting out of this radars??& do all pay the radar fine ??

radar detectors detect radars they don't beat point to point radars so actually there's no way around these,Dubai's had them on Sh.Zayed & other main thoroughfares for a few years now,our sleepy little town is slowly catching up with the real world so it's far from being a "new radar system"...it's been around for a few years now...

Thats a good news if only that they will catch just any body, absolutely any body, irrespective of who they are

beyond 120 kph along Dukhan road. But it also surprise me more to have variable speed in a main thoroughfare.

Example, take Khalifa Street from Oryx R/A to TV R/A, 100 kph. From TV to Markhiya R/A, 80 kph, From Markhiya to entry of Dukhan road, 100 kph again and Dukhan road, 120 kph. Exit to Dukhan Township, 80 kph (very abrupt coming from 120 kph speed)

And if the traffic bureau is serious, they will notice that only the big cars (like LC, Patrol, Armada etc) are driving beyond 120. ANd who own mostly these cars or shall we say, who drives mostly these kind of cars. I think the challenge is to apprehend these "few" (really????) shenanigans!

My suggestions is to have a graduated fines based on what kind of cars are you driving (for speed violations only).

The very finall goal is to raise the highest number of fines, like everywhere else, in my opinion.

But they have to conceal it behind the phrase 'we are doing it for the citizen's safety'.

this is tech ... so people can stop in b/w then speed again .. lol .. just kiding

instead of spending so much money on this ... they can ask manufacturer to not to make car with 120+ speed .. simple .. but nah in that way they mess with corporate ... but they control individuals ... who don't have enough power..

its a human nature .. if you have power/speed/space u will use it

As in the US, people are bringing in radar detectors to beat the system. There is no such thing as a fool proof system, those who are keen to beat the system will always find a way. I think it will be more effective if Qatar put a lot more police cars to patrol the streets for all sorts of traffic violations and not only speeding. Wreckless driving on the streets of Doha is a much more serious problem than overspeeding IMHO.

why is govt spending so much when overspeeding can be totally eliminated by installing speed governers in the vechicle so no one can go above the set speed .. it will less taxing for the govt and residence
