Now will the other countries follow
The Philippines said Monday it had signed a historic agreement with Saudi Arabia that would protect thousands of Filipina maids from being exploited in the Middle Eastern kingdom.
The agreement guarantees Filipina maids benefits like a day off each week
“We are very confident that cases of abuse will be less after this agreement takes effect because the agreement ensures fair and humane treatment of our HSWs (home service workers),” she said.
Under the agreement, Saudi Arabia is committed to set up a 24-hour hotline for labour dispute resolution, the department said.
The agreement is aimed at preventing exploitation of Filipina maids such as confiscation of their passports to control them, overworking them with no rest days and preventing them from returning home.
Saudi Arabia initially resisted the demands and suspended the entry of new maids but in September of last year, it agreed to a $400 a month minimum wage and lifted the ban.

are you a Filipino? You have this kind of crab mentality Pinoys are famous for.
I am not supporting anything, Scarab, I just don't want to spread bad things about my country improperly specifically in this kind of forum!
How can you spread rumours about Filipino corruption when all the available evidence points to it being a fact.
Please explain why you support the current system of explotiation of OFWs?
so you are the CHEATER.
so you just don't spread rumors, you do unjust accusation also, well, I'll just wait for the Mods on what to do with you. You are breaking the moral rule of QL.

I suspect by your answers you are one of the Pinoys that benefits from cheating fellow OFW and engage in corruption.
so what makes you? Sorry, it's not Aquino. How about you, are you a Filipino or ashamed to be one? Good! We don't need people who spread rumors!
I'm sorry is your family name Aquino.. sorry to upset your family.
your profile says otherwise. Why should we believe you? If you can lie about your nationality, what do you know about this subject? Do you have proofs?
Who do you think makes a lot of money out of OFW? Through corrupt agents, deals with foreign governments, POEA 'fees' and the like.
please elaborate?
Plenty of money in the Philipines but also plenty of corruption from the top down, exporting their people like modern day slaves is in the interests of the politicans and the POEA.
done.
"instead of drafting agreements to protect Filipina maids, the govt of the Philippines should invest more on home based jobs and businesses for these women"
MN - my point exactly.
It will probably go the same way as it has in the UAE, with the locals complaining about being exploited by the maids home countries.
Maybe a step in the right direction.
Instead of drafting agreements to protect Filipina maids, the govt of the Philippines should invest more on home based jobs and businesses for these women.
How do comments that discribe more than 25 million as animals rapests go by the Mods without deletion!!???....I mean I know only a sick minded person can utter these and they should be thoroughly ignored, but but HELLO MODS WAKE UP!!!
need people & place among other things ..
are the basic requirements to have a 'nation' ?
If there won't be any individual who'll rule & where ?
Then what insurance companies are doing ?
Scarab2: Dogs are haram, so it gotta be camels.
Saudia has probably more of Indonesian and Sri Lankan maids than maids from the Philippines. It is the master-slave mind-set of people there that has to be first changed by the government or human rights pressure groups within the country and then reinforced by implementing the already existing laws. This will take time I am sure if at all.
For the last few months, KSA is facing shortage of domestic helpers as some far east countries have restricted the passage of maids to KSA following some incidents of abuse and unjust punishments given to maids.
courtesy and respect. Isolated cases of abuse does not make everyone a sinner. Or that is your mentality?
The agreement was signed (I think) last Monday. Give it a chance to work. Negativism will not help specially coming from us.
Embassy officials are too lazy to help. They are despicable bunch of government officials eating a slice of peoples taxes.
Have you forgotten a Canadian envoy cursing a Filipino in Canada?
So many incidents like exploitation and rape could have been prevented if embassy officials work and do their job.
In Saudi Arabia before, a maid ran away from her employer and when an Arab stormed the Philippine Embassy, the poor helper was turned over gladly by idiot government official task to help the workers.
It's not the question of the agreement but a question of implementing it.
if the government DOES NOT do anything, they are bad. If they DO something, they are still bad. So, what's the solution?
You said it so well Nomad - I doubt the philippines goverment or its authorities are bothered at what their people and specially their women go through as long as the dollars keep rolling in. The philippines was once a great nation brought to its knees now by its corrupt and greedy leaders
Ironically the Philippine govt continues to brag about the countries' economic achievements while at the same time encourages its women to work overseas as housemaids. Either they don't have the clue on the hardships and sufferings of these women or they just turning a blind eye while enjoying their dollar remittance.
Makes very little difference, if any. Unless the mindset of the people changes, noting will change.
Introducing a legislation that looks good on paper is all just fine, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Let's see how successfully the lawmakers and rights groups from both countries will be in ensuring the law is now implemented justly!
This can only work if the Philipines Embassy can continually check on the maids and more importantly if the maids will have the courage to speak up..
Its just an eyewash to please the Philippines government so that the passage of the maids are not restricted..
Oh what a turn around. I suppose they have realized that they cannot get away with the abuse of their workers forever even behind closed walls and closed doors and they now know that the world is watching the things that have been happening there.
