Okay awkward/embarassing question

By 88catherine

Hey, Names Cathy and I want to know all about qatar.

But beware that some questions I have are awkward.

I want to know about the qatari view of children out of wedlock.

If some girl IN qatar gets impregnated by some guy, how are they treated, and how is the kid treated after its born.

Sorry if that question was too weird.

I have a much better idea now of what life in Qatar is like after reading this site. It gives me an opportunity to talk to Qataris like Bajesus, Aisha and QatarGirl who are intelligent and open to discussion about life here.

I do feel bad for them sometimes because we can be a little harsh on Qatari culture, but I think they understand that sometimes we speak out of frustration. Westerners and Middle Easterners are two very different people, with very different sets of values.

Actually I would like to thank Catherine for bringing up this thread, because I was wondering what would happen if I should find myself pregnant out of wedlock here.

I agree with Giasi. I think Qatar Living forum is exactly how Qatar really is. I would have the same conversations with the same kind of people in real life here.

It's not to disagree with Bajesus that I am saying it now, he has a point as well because no matter how many sites you read about a country, actually BEING there is a different thing altogether. But for us "oldies" - this site is a great virtual representation of the actual life in Qatar.

You are absolutely right bajesus, i do beg to differ :)

QatarLiving is a good reflection of people who you would interact with living and working here (excluding those who dont have access to the web). I think there is a good cross-section of members. The fact that a small number of qataris are members is also a reflection of the interaction you would expect from qataris in real life. Not all qataris are as open and informed as the qataris on this forum, like yourself, qatari, aisha etc etc. So the fact that you see them arround in abundance doesnt neccessarily mean that you will interact with them at any level.

I know that qataris tend to get a bad deal here by the other members, and it must make you a little annoyed. However, i am sure, a person like yourself, is also annoyed by the behaviour of some of your countrymen who give all a bad name. You are intelligent and you see things around you and you must admit that alot of the criticism is not without basis. As they say in arabic "evil is generic but goodness is specific".

as in any all other things, places, ppl etc, theres good and the bad,im not taking the things i read around here as mantra as ppl differ in a lot of things. but it is look at things from different perspectives and good to kno basic things that can get u deported or jailed:) it's a good thing that there are also lot of expats in this forum, as sometimes things that locals take for granted are quite a big deal to those who arent used to it. what one consider as trivial might be vital for some. condescending or patronising tones may abound, but if one learns from it, it's easy to let it roll off ur back.

Lol bullsshake I dont mean for you to take this the wrong way but the only thing here remotely indicative of what it's really like in Qatar is the site address. As much as I enjoy engaging in threads with my fellow QL members, and Im sure most of everybody here agree with me on this except perhaps for those who would probably beg to differ (QC, DG, Super, GIASI), your reality will differ considerabely once you step foot here. I mean, generally speaking, even when it comes to expats and Qatari's we dont exactly share the same worldview outlook on things as evidenced by many threads here. As a site mostly consisted of a non-Qatari community the perception or the opinions displayed here tend to be one-sided and in many instances can be really taken in as a disservice to many Qataries and non-Qtaries as well. So whatever conception you get, whatever impression one gives you here, you have to leave them at the door once you get off that plane and base your own conclusions, be it good or bad, upon your stay and according to your own experiences here. Hope you find this enlightening.

I believe that Catherine has not a clue regarding society in Qatar.

She only knows of the USA. If she knew anything of the Middle East we would not be having this sort of thread and the utter rubbish that is being passed about.

i know a girl in school who got knocked up by this dude. So they decided to get married but had some problems so she went away for a semester.

i heard they r rly tough here on this toppic, so its better to be safe than get beat up by the cops here.

It's done. Read the papers, in the crime reports very recently over the past 2 months.

I was in court a couple of years ago when 30 and 60 lash sentences were given.

Not to me :)

I say jail maybe but lashes r not done anymore, not that I heard of for non Qataris or Muslims. But as said, it can happen depending on the judge. By the way, the lashes r done after the lady had had her baby n can handle such torture :) Even in my opinion no one can handle such punishment even if all healthy :P

As u said, it's best 4 the girl to just leave n come back when it's all done with :) But that may mean not coming back for at least 2 yrs.. To me, being away for even 10 yrs is better than lashes :P

Lashes after delivery, not during the pregnancy.

By 88catherine• 2 Sep 2006 22:46

Lashes???? for a pregnant woman? wow thats kinda harsh. anyway I guess its best to leave and comeback after the baby is born.

By e46M3• 2 Sep 2006 21:31
e46M3

But you must understand that it will only come to light if a couple are caught in the act or the female is about to deliver and requires medical care. Regular doctor checkups can be done without arousing too much suspicion.

Lashes and of course a prison sentence.

The courts here pass Sharia law sentences, to an extent, and handing out 30-60 lashes is not unheard of.

So jassim, Is there some sort of punishment other than deportation like jail time or fines?

hey catherine,

are u asking this specifically about somebody, cos if u are, then i think they are in a wee bit of trouble.

Anyway a girl getting pregnant out of wedlock is definitely frowned upon, not accepted in religion, so kids out of wedlock would be ostracised in society, unless the matter is cleverly concealed, which families would definitely try doing.

even then, i had heard from someone that a secret is safe with 3 people provided that 2 of them are dead.get my drift.

I also asking why the question if it was about Qatari girls? But if it was about non-Qataris then the answer is having babies without marriage is against the laws here n yes the girl, n the guy responsible, will be prosecuted n deported. So if it happens to an expat then the best solution is to leave n come back after it was all done with.

As for Qatari girls, then the normal solution is a huge cover-up, bigger than even what Bush would try, to stop anyone from knowing; because such a thing will bring shame to the whole family n none will survive the outcome. For the baby, if the family could not cover-up the whole thing, then the government will be responsible to provide a foster home for it :)

Why do you ask?

By dweller• 2 Sep 2006 09:00

This question from a girl under 18?

I have known of girls becoming pregnant in Qatar. Their parents got them out as soon as possible.

The issue of how the child would be treated will never occur as all would have been deported.

i think u get deported if u get pregnant there out of wedlock..ppl get jailed or deported for premarital sex as well..not totally sure just from what i've surmised from previous posts around here
