Pakistani students shine

By mathboy

Two Pakistani students won third position after competing with more than 1,500 students from 52 nations at the world’s largest pre-college scientific research event. The two teenage girls, Mehwish Ghafoor and Ambreen Bibi, study biology at the Federal Government College for Women, Islamabad. They won third place in the field of environmental sciences at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair which concluded in Los Angeles on Thursday. The research project titled ‘Degradation of Environment Pollutant with Nanocomposites’ talks about a method to make polluted water drinkable. The girls also got a $1,000 reward for developing the technique.

"Being a teacher please enjoy encouraging student regardless their caste and creed."

This is a given - in a school such as mine with 24 different nationalities I delight in all students success.

I am going to repeat again....in every post I made I was very certain to applaud these girls achievements and congratulate them - they deserve no less.

The point I was making was about the reporting of the story. I will quote you two of the responses on the Dawn News website article that may help explain my point a little:

"The Marching Morons says:

Today at 1:43 pm (8 hours ago)

A really good news, but will their idea be materialized or will it simply be a case of blank “mashallah” and no action?"

and

"Omer says:

Can not find the names of this Pakistani team amongst the winners on the Intel official website?

http://www.intel.com/about/corporateresponsibility/education/isef/winners.htm

Did they actually win or say have an honourable mention or were just participants in the event?"

http://www.dawn.com/2011/05/15/pakistani-students-win-prize-in-intel-science-fair.html

What I objected to was using these girls real achievements to bolster a rather nastily disguised piece of manipulated jingoism by the Dawn News journalists. It dishonoured their achivements and could serve to belittle them in the long run.

I do not object in anyway, shape of form, to the girls winning a prize for their hard work and talents - wherever they may come from.

I hope that is clear.

:)

The Tribune is concise, to the point and has the relevent information.

The Dawn News and Gulf Times articles do not.

It was not the 'news' I did not like, I applaud it, I teach Pakistani girls and always encourage them to excel - rather it was the construction of the article I did not like(ie questioned)

I think we maybe arguing over two seperate and distinct points here.

It seems The Gulf Times got their story from Pakistan's Dawn News, here is, I believe, the full article that the Gulf Times edited down:

http://www.dawn.com/2011/05/15/pakistani-students-win-prize-in-intel-science-fair.html

Dawn News correctly cite that the girls won A third place award in enviromental sciences rather than THE third place.

However they then go on to mention the two schools/students from the US that won the OVERALL 1st and 2nd places out of 1500 students taking part.

Whilst none of what they have written is incorrect, facts that they have been withheld and the juxtapostion of the two phrases I point to above make it appear that the Pakistani girls won 3rd place overall out of 1500 students. This is not the case, as I pointed out in previous posts.

Whether the journalists deliberatly manufactured this impression, or simply did not understand the data presented to them, is a matter of opinion. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that the careful juxtipostion of truthful statements with the ommission of clarifying data suggest, to me, that the journalists were engaged in an exercise to hoodwink their readership and inflate a sense of national pride regardless of the actual truth.

Once again I must state that I am not trying to denigrate the girls involved - they are stars who deserve praise and congratulations - rather my critic of this story is more concerned with the workings of the media in manipulating a story to fit an agenda.

Neither is this a pro USA post, I am not American and have no reason to hold a pro US bias - I cringe at the shouts of USA,USA, USA! whenever I hear them.

Just trying to find out the truth of the story as there was something about the post in the Gulf Times that didn't read and sit right, and I was interested as to what it could be.

If you are content with the media giving you false info and trying to manipulate your thoughts and opinions in such a way then these postings of mine will have been of no interest to you. However if you are interested in how the media and words can put a slant on, or downright distort, a story then I hope I have been of some service.

Finally, my lasts words on this post, as I have been careful to stress on all of my previous posts so as no one can be in any doubt about my opinion of these students - well done girls, you have done amazingly well, take a bow.

Pakistanis should be proud of these two girls. They have done very well.

For the rest of us it should highlight the importance of educating girls in maths and sciences and encouraging them to pursue careers in the traditionally male fields. In other words, we need to see more 'Mathgirls', not just 'Mathboys'.

Adey--I think I get what you are saying with the maps and agree to an extent, but keep in mind also that many of the papers being published in the sciences in the US and Europe are coming from Asians (either immigrants or children of immigrants). To me it shows how these countries' educational systems are under-serving their children.

PS--Mathboy--VG5 said all was well with you two, so as far as I am concerned we're good too. Apologies for any ill feelings.

as I said - well done to the girls involved - an excellent achievement in a worldwide field. They should be proud of themselves, and quite rightly so.

However the truth of the of events is just that, the truth. No need to over-egg the pudding as it belittles the real achievements of these students to be used as false propoganda for nationalist fervour.

Once again well done - just getting the facts straight from the ever so reliable Gulf Times that probably got this story 3rd hand.

Which cities around the world produce not just the most but the best scientific papers?

The circles in red plot lower performing cities and green for higher performing cities.

So a small green circle indicates a small high quality output and a big red circle indicates a high volume but lower quality output.

Quality of paper and its influence is determined by the number of citations - the more a paper is cited the more important it is.

The researchers were using data from Web-of-Science database http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_of_Science which is the largest accessible citation database with links to over 800.000.000 cited references.

For Physics:

see page 26 & 27:

http://www.societyforscience.org/document.doc?id=308

Under the Environmental Sciences Category(1 of 17):

One school won the Best of Category Prize - S Korea ($5k)

Two schools won First Award prize - S Korea and US ($3k)

Four schools won Second Award prize - US, Canada, Argentina ($1.5k)

Six schools won Third Award prize - US, Malaysia & Pakistan ($1k)

Eight schools won Forth Award prize - US, S Korea, China ($500)

So the reality of the story is that there are multiple winners in each Award group - 5 in total - 21 recipients(15 of which were from the US) of prizes in this one category, of which the Pakistan school came somewhere between 8th at best and 13th at worst, being placed in in the 4th tier of prizes(not 3rd) - not forgeting that there is one prize above First Award (ie the Best of Category Prize)

Remember this is only within one category of 17.

Sorry to burst everyones bubble - Still, well done girls. But a media twisted story.
