Hmm. Until the Doha North sewer works have been built, it's always going to be nasty around the waterfront. Just look at the turds floating in the sea by the Corniche. I often wonder whether I've been blessed with being close to a royal poo. Maybe some of them should be collected and gilded.

Anyway, as I understand it, until the sewer works is finished, there's nowhere for the poo to go.

deedee - what the guy said could be true, i wouldn't be suprised of over fished, damaged sea beds due to drag nets etc.

What is more of concern is the boats/motorcraft that will be using it, and wether they will be checked for polluting.

I remember going snorkeling in dubai at snoopy island at Fujairah the water was 'clear' but i got oil all over me.

Thanks deedee. Shame the dolphin's have disappeared though.

(On second thoughts, perhaps it's for the best given the way some animals are treated in Qatar).

The best thing for pearl...would be to convert it into a mammoth studio...with sets and locations for Film Shoots...Massive movie editing room & infrastructure, etc...

They could rent it out to Film Companies to shoot Movies in Qatar.

...something similar to Whistling Woods, Mumbai, or Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad, India.

The Pearl project was approved by the "Supreme Council" of Qatar even before starting the bund.

To answer Tallg's question:

I attended a meeting by Mr. Bolton who is the head manager of the environmental department of United Development Company which is building the Pearl. He stated that because they did not do rainbow dredging, rather put a bund in place (like a big wall) and dredged into the bund, erosion was held in check. He further stated the area where the pearl is located was a fished out location only 10m deep. Little to no vegetation or animal life was to be found there previously. Since the pearl has been built, a natural regneration of both vegetation and marine life has occured. He gave slide examples and statistics to back up his statements. All in all, a very impressive presentation. Now whether I believe it all or not (could possibly all be BS) is still a question.

Arien - Quality is based on how good is the quality control. Any Tom & Harry Contractor can not win the construction contracts there. All the contractors have to be pre qualified and approved by UDC even before invition to Tender.

probably very little to none tallg, or they paid for a bogus study. These other land reclaimation projects like dubai can go bad if the currents etc not been factored properly and you could end up with pollution not being able to be drawn away. Is water quality being checked - go take a look as you walking along the promenades.

Lucky - design and finishing yes, But quality is depended on the builder no?.

each property inside is been developed by different builders.

"To a pre set design and finishings by UDC" Developers are not allowed to deviate from the original design.

I know this beacause I was with the Pearl Consultants Team

Cool, I can see my house developing on those screen shots too!

It's also worth noting the Lusail development progressing to the north of The Pearl.

Someone told me that dolphins sometimes used to swim around by Safliya Island, but they disappeared as soon as the dredging started for The Pearl. I wonder how much research went into the effects it has on the environment.

i visited my houses this week, and i read horror stories, about quality and poor labour, i was very very pleasantly surprised, quality is better than i expected, facilities are much better than i thought, cant wait to move in....i did not see other houses, but mine certainly looked very very very impressive...however my investment advisor told me horror stories of sabban towers....so can i guess, it all depends on just how lucky you are...

I don't know which builders are operating out on The Pearl, but since EVERY compound, apartment block, shopping center, commercial building (etc etc etc etc) I have visited has been absolute RUBBISH I just have a really hard time believing that The Pearl will be any different.

Are you trying to argue that something like Ezdan is the exception to the rule?

By Arien• 30 Mar 2009 15:47
Arien

Daniele - no offense meant, you may be rght on the price.. but I dont agree with the quality you mentioned, because of a simple reason that , each property inside is been developed by different builders. cheers

Well..Initially I got the same point of view but after some reading I think that a lot of the master minds in investment can argue about it. If you have a chance please check the economic forecasting around the world during next 5 years. And you will see that Qatar is on top 5. It seems that Qatar has a lot of expectations around the world and only the pearl - real estate- project is at the same level than other industrial project in Qatar. But just the time has the right answer. Let’s wait and see..

Dear Arien, i don't have intentions, i just have my personal point of view. I think that If pearl will continue to keep prices high and all different dev will continue to finish the buildings looking only at the lowest price that can fit the budget with the result of low quality products, that area very soon will loose the good start intention. Every thing must have the right price. Honestly, if I have 2ML QR I will buy right now an apartment in NY, London, Miami, Paris, Rome. Not in Doha. The right price for Pearl is around the 50% of the actual.

Venice is indeed sinking.

The New York Times recently published an article claiming that The Palm is sinking too http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/12/world/middleeast/12dubai.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2&hp

As for The Pearl, who knows. We'll find out soon enough.

One thing I wonder is, are designers factoring in global increases in sea height. Most of these developments are reclaimed land at or just above sea level. Isn't Venice collapsing/subsiding all the foundations rotting etc.

Never mind the decadent history of Venice, they could learn a lot from present day Venice too.

The place literally stinks almost all year round due to ageing infrastructure. It’s cracking and sinking and no one seems to have the inclination to want to fix the place.

And the minority population of locals truly resent the presence of all the outsiders, and frequently attempt to restrict their access to the lagoon’s infrastructure, despite the obvious fact that without the visitors the city would be a collection of formerly impressive, but currently derelict, buildings.

I always find it ironic as with all the Venice - pictures of women with masks etc - and that dont seem to have a clue about the history of decandent venice lol

So is the pearl planned to have bars/clubs with a liquor licence?
