I totally understand your view, am not against your views, as i believe everyone has their own way of seeing things and understanding things. I am a recent member I like the way we all communicate socially and in the End most of us all live in Doha. And yes I too have observed that this community is slightly biased which i think happens everywhere in this Modern World. People are discriminated on various grounds. In the End the Helpless ones suffer and are the victims to ruthless people.

But what we need to know is that people are supported be it right or wrong based on thier culture. A Western will support and favor Western, An Asian to an Asian and so on.. But the now its wonderful to see that Right Favors Right and Wrong is ignored, condemned.

Anyway, I always prefer peace and harmony. Its hurts to see what is happening in other parts of the world. Innocent people dying and families victims to Torture.. And in the end, when i see my self I am very greatful to God for keeping me safe & fine.

I know Westerners are hated and disliked in many parts of the world. I have many Westerners as Friends and I just love them for who they are chilled out and fun loving people. But just becoz of a few racist minded people we should not generalize our views.

So guys lets all try respecting one another here, and see if all can come out some positive results. And please avoid banning people as along they dont use offensive or vulgur statements. Most of us have our own way of presenting views - Strong or Soft.. In any case i dont support Arguments..

2.Have you ever experienced me starting the bad language, or am I always just firing back after somebody use bad languag? (if you think I start bad language, kindly provide proof)

3.Do you guys know, in your culture, what is the principal of firing back and do you approve it and apply it in your lives? If yes, then why is it forbidden for us to do the same? Why do you guys only see the reaction but not the action (there is a bigger example like Israelis & Palastineans)

4.In that thread you are referring to, why is it that everybody is attacking me & voting if I should be banned or not, while they are not stupid to read that this is not the subject of the thread? On another thread, a very wise american member was talking logic to me with such respect (for himself & for others) that he actually made me feel ashamed of those moments when I lose my temper on some stray dogs while trying to stop them from biting our community. We actually found grounds for understanding, love & respect that I consider him as a friend now, and I am sure he do the same.

The worst thing about this website is its administration. They take sides, they block you although nothing in their rules allow them to block you. There is nothing wrong in being politically correct, as long as it serves the purpose.

This is more important when we live in a pluralistic society where people from every country from every continent live and work. Also these politically correct statements are more important and will work better when you want to send a message, which you want everyone to follow.

Relax, absolutely. I wish. There is always this west meets east debate going on here, and nobody getting the big picture. The west (for me that is Europe, US, etc) is full of hypocrisy and plenty of faults......none of which I will defend. Every country does. Regarding drunk drivers.........you hear the news in Europe every Sunday morning, how this or that kid died in a car accident due to excessive drinking. Yes it's a sad fact of life. People should not drink and drive.

What gets me is that certain people here think that just because Qatar does not allow booze, that there are no drunken drivers of Arab origin. Hello? You should have seen the number of Saudi citizens coming across to Bahrain, getting drunk and driving back (or dying on the way back).

I think it's sad if people take their personal experience and act like it's global truth.

People need to realize that these encounters are chance based.

most of the people in Qatar are non-western... so by default I would say you will have most driving problems (or any other problems) with non-westerners... so what?

Now in this case xena described a specific problem where non-western people make a serious point of noticing her.

Where is the argument for that? A westerner isn't going to stare at a white chick.

It also seems that some locals consider western styles of dress an invitation to be treated like a piece of meat... of course people raised in America or otherwise would disagree, it is nonetheless the reality.

I'm not making any assumptions on how xena was dressed, but I thought I would throw that out there anyway.

when you begin driving here in earnest, you'll see what Xena means...there are men who literally STOP in the street just to oogle women, with total lack of regard to what or who is behind them. I've never seen that back home...although I have seen some run almost off the road due to that...:) its just a very different world here, not saying its bad, just different. Be very observant when you go into the malls and stores as how women are viewed by the men here..its akin to mentally undressing them. Its NOT a pleasant experience and its a 24/7 occurance. Women can't go anywhere without that happening and its not just the westerners they oogle either..its all women...we are just not used to being done that way. Its rather like being stalked each time you walk out the door..that's what is the basis behind this post. Its just gotten a bit out of hand with some folks taking it to the extremes and putting words in others' mouths.

As for me, it WAS a westerner (american soldier) who shot dead my brother-in-law in a street in baghdad 3 days ago. So I guess my theory is right, NOT yours: streets are unsafe because of westerners, not non-westerners!

I have been reading the posts for a couple of days on QL and found it to be quite amusing.....I wish I had more time to contribute...However I think QL is mainly dominated by females.....who want to change the way people think and act. I am not doubting your intentions but the way is inappropriate. I have to deal with this problem everday as I am managing operations of a branch office of an mnc having employees from six different nationalities and most of them are engineers mind u. One must b more considerate and try to b diplomatic and avoid being blunt.The example below might be helpful.

one night mom and dad come home from a dineer party to find their little daughter's face fully covered with her mom's make-up. Mom seeing her things ruined gets into frenzy and yells at the girl. Next day the girl goes to her father and asks why was mom angry at me. The father replies, dear because you ruined her make-up which costs a lot. She replies back but dad u always praise mom when she puts on make-up.I just wanted to look pretty like her too.

So I would request ladies to be understanding first and be tolerant then. Consider urself as if in departure lounge of an airport.

The whole point about driving here is this for me:

I don't mind if these people want to commit suicide on the road, I just object if they want to take me with them.

I read both sides of the story, I agree with Arisapply and what ever said. But I always believe on two sides of the story. XENA i think you took this whole issue too personal. No one curses no one here and by no ones curses we loose someone we love.

But from what is understand XENA is if you had address this issue as A Plea to - Karwa Taxi Driver or A Plea to Taxi Driver's I am sure this issue would not have gone off course. I think its not Race or Culture that is responsible to ones action. Its the way one thinks, and its the way one adapts to life. Life is Complicated its up to us how difficult or easy we want to live it.

I am still putting my point of non-acceptability of putting the blame on one section of this world where all sort of crimes happen in every bit of this world. Rather let us blame the person only, which happened to XENA but not the specific region. Let me put into a nutshell, NO ONE IS PERFECT OR 100%, EVERYONE HAS THEIR PLUSES AND MINUS. Just scan and choose the right and leave the rest. I am sure XENA is an educated lady and from a good background and will understand our feelings. One more fact: Many deliberations of incidents brings out more lessons to learn in our life, we are still learning..... until our death.

I siad it before; some "things/creatures" are only here to promote hatred & they see themselves as superior to others. There is no reasoning with them, and they are not going to confess their mistakes & hatred to other (non-western) cultures. They prefer to be killed in the street by a drunk (western) driver, but they will consider a harmless look from a "non-western" driver as a threat to the security of mankind.

No matter how you try to make them stop their lies and help them see the facts, they will always tell you: "do yourself a favor and do a survey...etc" but when you tell them that records show that figures are much higher in where you come from, they are ready to lie again to tell you: "but Qatar usually hides such figures & don't report them". They have a ready false answer to everything.

2 things, Xena; you still haven't replied Mak1, and...when you said: "I think your biggest problem is that Allah made you arab and not a westerner"!! (the "moderators" of QL would usually block me for words much more innocent then these, but I think you get away with it because you have a "special arrangement" with those "moderators") I think that the best thing that can happen to any human, is to be a non-westerner.

I read your forum posting and the gist of it is quite clearly of a specific nature, so how Air Sa/upply, and others can twist it all into a racist generalisation is beyond me.. Blogging yesterday on this site was an eye opener for me, and I will leave for SA tomorrow saddened that there is such hatred and name-slinging on this site. It is not necessary, but I digress here... back to the issue:

Merely being a passenger in a car in this city is a terrifying experience, even having had to deal with our taxi drivers in SA, who have created quite a bad name for themselves, including their own rules of the road, seeing drivers in this place is an experience like none other. Even as a passenger here in Doha I get stared at (being blonde and blue eyed maybe, not my fault), so I can clearly understand where you are coming from. Courtesy... ahh sorry that word does exist on the roads here, so I will not go there - not many will not understand this.

I was also witness (as a passneger, involved) in a minor incident on the road last week - seems that its all a joke. 'Oh well lets just go off to the police station, pay QR100 as admission of guilt, and then maybe we can just do it again, cos these other drivers get up my nose.' I, as a tourist, had my life in jeopardy - can you imagine my kids back home hearing that either (1) mom will not be home for another few weeks as she was in a car accident or (2) mom will never be coming home again..... Wonderful stuff.

I am going home tomorrow with lots of wonderful stories about this place. I have experienced a rich, interesting, diverse culture, food, energy... including being generously hosted by a friend, who has shown me hospitality unmatched. Thank you all for the experience. I find that shop assistants in your shops and malls the most courteous imaginable too! But sadly there will be a few stories like the few mentioned above... Bottom line, we are all not perfect, and realised that there is good and bad in every nation.

Just a footnote though to the drivers out there (everywhere! before I get slammed) - PLEASE KEEP TO THE RULES OF THE ROAD, THINK OF YOUR FELLOW MAN, THE CHILDREN WITH YOU, THE INNOCENT PEDESTRIANS WHO CANNOT MIND READ YOUR NEXT MOVE. COURTEOUSNESS IS KEY...

I am really hurt only on your prefix "non-westener" where it hurts everyone and even when you meet me next time in some part of this tiny country with a pre-fixed mind on your experiences - certainly it will not a friendly look. Rather, you stop the car, note the car number and immediately inform police of this unsafe nature of this driver a uncivilized human being. In this 21st century, let us be united and civilize this world, rather than hurting the balance lot with a general prefixed word.

I think its a cultural thing more than anything else. In the 'west' whatever that means now, men of course do look at women but do not stare. Its more convertly done and certainly does not involve holding up traffic or causing accidents.......... My expereince in other countries not just the middle east is that men, although not condone in society, can get away from staring at women or making lewd remarks. I think its also a fact that Qatar is becoming a male dominator society now as expats families cannot afford to live here anymore.

Unfortunately, I am not the only person to have experience this, AND, it was not the first time. Its happened many times over, I was just expressing my distaste for the way these men recklessly put innocent lives at risk, just to have a oogle at a lady. Its sad don't you think?

Do yourself a favour, and do a survey on how many times this happens and who the perpetrators are. You will be very surprised at the results.

That's a good question AirSapply. I would say that Aussies, NZ and South Africans are westerners. I would also include the Phillipines and Singapore. I don't think it is a question of geography as much as a cultural thing. This is worthy of having its own thread. What does "westerner" actually mean?

I want to clarify here that I never condoned the Bad driving practices.

Speeding, Bad overtaking, Not adhering to the rule of law, not Wearing seatbelts and Road rage etc are all in excusable.

No nationalities are exempt, when it comes to this point of Road discipline.

I only differ in the way it has been titled here.

Are they accident-free drivers? Which rate of drunken drivers are higher? Western or non-western? Does that justify that a "westerner" who is living & working in this "non-western" land can make such a racist comment & blame ONLY non-western drivers of jeoprodizing road safety? Do you know how many "western" men I have witnessed who had terrible car accidents here because the were totally drunk while driving?

She is not so ignorant to have chosen that title by mistake. Such "westerners" do these things on purpose because the think that their race is much better than the "non-western" race. She could have complained about her problem & made her point without chosing such a racist title but they do these things intentionally, and when you face them with the facts about themselves, they start spitting poison of hatred on you.

For the simple reason that you are not driving in Qatar yet, I won't get on your case too much.

It's not just Qatar, it's everywhere (as you said), but one thing IS for sure. I have spent most of my life in the Middle East, and I can guarantee that Xena's comment is more than correct.

So many people on this forum know what it's like to drive here, and for the simple reason of wanting to be politically correct, they don't let 'all' of their frustrations out. It is not an open attack on the local population here, but the driving conditions and experiences to be had on the road here speak for themselves.

Sure, let's all be politically correct and NOT say anything. Let's all shut up and just keep on getting cut off, almost run over; have obnoxious drivers harass you.......AND let's all NOT say anything, and NOT flip them off with a finger (because then we'll get thrown in jail)..... and let's all NOT get upset, at the fact that we have our kids in the car, and some idiot is 2cm from your bumper trying to run a red light........ and lets all just turn a blind eye.

I REALLY wish that people would stop defending how so many people drive here. It doesn't matter where the driver is from.......THERE ARE RULES! THESE RULES SAVE LIVES! And if someone wants to go and get themselves killed, then do it on your own time, somewhere out in the desert, but not on the streets.

People drive like idiots all over the world, so no place is exempt. The glaring difference is that here, people feel immune to justice and in their arrogant ignorance, may just end up killing someone.

once driving on the corniche road (the Bidda Park Signals) where i saw a mother and her kid waiting for the pedestrian crossing signal to cross the road. i kinda slowed my car (thought there is a speed radar) and that woman took it as a sign to cross the road and she tried crossing the road. I had to press the brake pedal as hard as I can and my car stopped inches behind them and the mother and the kid had frozen in their tracks.

I really wanted to knock the living lights out of her. The problem is that some people believe that it is the duty of the driver to slow down when they see a woman crossing.

I have learnt two things never trust a person riding a bicycle coz you never know what is gonna do on the road and secondly the woman pedestrians.

So naturally I become dead slow when ever i see a woman on the road bcoz you never know when is she gonna go for a run on the road irrespective of the speeding cars. Next time I will take a picture of the women walking in the middle of the road and post it here.

are right that some of those people are stopping for the wrong reasons. Some will cause trouble for other drivers and maybe accidents while the others stop to have a look. I normally stop when I see in my mirrors that there is no one behind or approaching me, it won't be a problem ... but sometimes I find it difficult to stop because I feel that some of them will refuse to pass thinking that I would be looking at them while I don't have any of that in mind :(

At least the guy stopped for you. Yesterday one almost ran me and a friend over in a parking lot. AND....he was looking at me the whole time....so he clearly knew we were there.
