Qatar Airways Staff Terminated as she puts Henna on her Hand

On Friday Evening, an Indian Lady working with Qatar Airways applied Henna (Mehendi) on her Hands as an Indian Tradition was terminated by Qatar Airways Chief Akbar Al Baker. A terror was created in QR Nazi Camp. Everyone is Afraid of it. Is there any Human Right in Qatar or Everyone is Slave working in Qatar.

With Regards,

Qatar Airways

It sounds like you did not follow procedure while arming the door. That could be a very serious problem, resulting in a blown slide. I'm guessing that's the reason for an abrupt termination and the gruff statements.

This is just ridiculous.... a complete flip of what really happened... like diwali81 said this female works for qatar aviation services which is a sub of qatar airways..... not really important if its qr or qas because the rules are the same for everyone .... Company says "No visible body tattoos" ....needless to say Mehandi/henna is the indian version of tattoo but temperory....She had come back from vacation after her wedding and she had mehandi/henna on her hands..... .... Chief was travelling and so unfortunate for her she happned to be at the front desk at the check-in area .... She was suspended for a day or 2 i am not sure and was asked to work at the back office until the henna/mehandi is gone ....

I've been reading the story and comments about the staff's mehendi on her hands. It is interesting to see how the story changed. I was there. number one, she works with qatar aviation services and not directly qatar airways. second she was not terminated, still works with me at qatar aviation services. yes, we do have a strict uniform regulations bit so do the rest of the gulf airlines. i came to qatar aviation services from bahrain where my last airline did not even pay us our salaries at the end. i chose to come to QAS by myself and agreed to the regulations for uniforms and other job requirements. it was my choice. no it is to a nazi camp but yes it is strict and professional but i have to say i like being professional. QAS pays me on time and i don't have to worry if it will closedown and not pay me as my other company did. many people work here since 10 plus years so if it was nazi camp they could go. but what i wanted to say is she did not get terminated, she is still here.

If she is working in the front office or dealing with customers then she only has herself to blame.

All airlines have very specific appearance standards. They are published in great (and often amusing) detail, but they are not ambiguous. Visible tattoos - either temporary, such as henna, or permanent - are not permitted. They don't have to make sense to everyone, but they have to be consistent. The only difference between this employee and one working at a US airline is that in the US the person with henna would have received warnings before termination.

Most henna is pretty ugly let's be honest and shouldn't these women be covering up anyway.

Some of this so called 5 star airlines should be careful on how they treat their workers especially the ones they think they can abuse and get away with. The very countries that this staff come from are the exact same places that contribute a major portion of the revenues of this airlines and keep them afloat and which goes a long way in helping their boss make all those big noises at this world travel gatherings

As a customer I would always prefer talking to a stewardess with a smiling face and good etiquette ( with or without henna) than being declined boarding due to over-booking in the aircraft of a '5 Star Airline'..:(

By fubar• 27 Oct 2013 12:07

It does the same harm as visible tattoos - it looks ugly and unprofessional and it has no place on a 5 star airline. Passengers don't like seeing people with ugly brown stains all over them, just like they don't like seeing tattoos on people's arms, or big ugly earrings.

Maybe she can get a job on Air India or some other lesser airline if this is how she wants to behave.

Hav also heard that one of the staff got fired coz the badge which he was wearing was not in the right place and was inclined...is tat true ?

By Galinda• 27 Oct 2013 10:32
Galinda

Pilots can (and have been) frequently fired for not wearing their caps along with the rest of their uniform. This includes when they are in Qatar Airways tower too.

You don't get to be a 5 star airline by allowing people to rock up to work looking messy and untidy, with bad hair, the wrong lipstick, visible tattoos etc.

As for the question in the OP - is there human right in Qatar? The "human right" to have henna on your hands? Well the answer to that is no, you don't have a right to turn up to work covered in henna.

By Rizks• 27 Oct 2013 10:22

Which Cap ? :)

By Knight Returns• 27 Oct 2013 10:17
Knight Returns

The lady should look-up her contract to know if there was something like this mentioned in it..termination at every drop of a hat is quite common in QA. I was told by of the QA staff that a pilot was terminated because he didn't wear his cap while he walked towards the aircraft for his flight and the big-boss happened to see him.

Guess some QA staff here can confirm..

Terminations, sackings and deportations just because they can seem to be part of the life out here and more often then not the excuses for doing this are simply ridiculous. The big organizations do it and the other little ones then follow the same examples and practices to get even with colleagues they cannot put up with it

By Rizks• 27 Oct 2013 09:22
Rizks

maybe she got married and as per the Indian customs...they need to apply henna on her hands.

Anywayz, thanks Galinda for the info.

By Good old joe• 27 Oct 2013 09:21
Good old joe

Well lets say she was Indian and she put henna and she went the extra mile to make her look more attractive as all airlines want them to. So where is the problem. This so called five star airlines should be more discreet, considerate and more understanding. They just cannot expect all their employees to be bimbos and programmed like robots and expect them to behave as such. Using such silly excuses for termination, sacking and deportation just because they can just sends all the wrong signals of such organizations and the worse thing is the other tiny little organizations around this parts then use this type of excuses to play around with their employees too

Of course they do Rizks. The grooming standards on Qatar Airways are very strict.

She is pretty stupid if she thought that she could have henna on her hands and no one would notice, unless she thought that because she is Indian (specifically mentioned in the OP) she was subject to different rules to the rest of the crew.

By Rizks• 27 Oct 2013 08:51

Do they mention this in the contract, where to apply Henna or not ? :(

I wonder if they too mention which brand to perfume and nail polish to apply for in the contract ?

By Galinda• 27 Oct 2013 08:50

Qatar Airways has strict grooming rules.

If you ignore the rules, expect harsh penalties.

IF her contract dos not allow it and she did it anyway then she deserves it

if on the other hand this was not an article "clearly" highlighted in her contract she may sue and she will surely win

if she was terminated for putting henna then all air hostess should be removed for putting tattoos in some part of their body...or should be removed for putting heavy make up...if not then get back that lady...enough of this slavery of QA
