Qatar Airways...........The Truth from Inside

akabralbaker
By akabralbaker

OK here it goes………………….It’s a long read, but if you read it you just might find out some tips and understand why Doha International Airport is so bad.

First of all there are two main companies in Doha Airport. Qatar Airways (QR) and Qatar Aviation Services (QAS). QR Staff are employed directly by the airline and are in the burgundy uniform, they are for customer service apparently and have the final say.

QAS are the handling agents who are indirectly owned by Qatar Airways, they are in the blue uniform. If you ever have a problem at Doha Airport it is pretty much pointless arguing with anyone from QAS as they have no power and can only follow what QR staff tell them.

WHY IS THE CUSTOMER SERVICE BAD AT DOHA?

The big problem is fear and respect which comes straight from the top [Moderator : Please do not mention names]

FEAR: The staff including managers and supervisors constantly live in fear of losing their job, they are reminded everyday that if they make one mistake they will be terminated.

RESPECT: Most supervisors and managers are in place by default; they have been there a long time and haven’t been good enough to move on. They have had no training in how to deal with staff and all they know is how to shout. They treat staff as they are their own personal slaves and force them to work unpaid overtime.

MONEY: The majority of the staff are on 2500 Riyals a month and worked to death, they work 9 hour days and 6 day weeks.

CONTROL: When the staff leave work their lives are controlled. The female staff have a curfew of 12am; they must return to their accommodation or be terminated. They are allowed no visitors into the accommodation. The male staff are not allowed any visitors passed 10pm of they will be terminated.

So you have staff that live in fear of losing their job, who spend all day being shouted at by passengers and then shouted at by their supervisors. They earn a low salary and then there employer controls there life outside of work. How can staff who are treated like this be expected to give passengers a five star service?

HOW QATAR AIRWAYS BREAK IATA RULES

Qatar Airways continue to break one of the most important laws according to IATA. In the event a flight is over booked, joining passengers (from Doha) must be denied boarding or offloaded before those who have already started their journey (transit passengers).

This never happens because the QR staff are too scared to upset Qataris. When these transit passengers arrive from their previous flight they are told they missed there connecting flight and therefore not entitled to compensation or accommodation. So they face a wait of sometimes 25 hours in Doha airport.

When Qatar Airways staff realise a flight is overbooked they are instructed to go through the passenger list and then identify those passengers who are from Nepal, India, Pakistan & Bangladesh. These are first choice passengers to be offloaded as they are considered to be less educated and less likely to know the rules and less likely to make a fuss.

Oh and if you are offloaded or denied boarding make sure you get your compensation, QR staff will not usually inform you of what you’re entitled to…it’s usually £100-£200 per person!!!!!!!!!!

There are loads more rules they break on a daily basis, including passports not checked with identity of passengers, luggage checked without passenger, strangers turning up to airport and being allowed to give luggage to complete strangers to take onboard with them without knowing the contents inside and lots lots more.

HOW TO GET EVERYTHING YOU WANT

QR & QAS Staff have one big fear, argumentative passengers who don’t believe their bullsh*t. This is why there no1 fear is NOT Qatari or American passengers…but the British. The reason is the British know how to complain and never give up, trust me if you don’t fight QR & QAS staff they will not do anything for you. If you want compensation or any decent level of customer service you need to DEMAND IT. So to get everything you want all you have to do is complain and argue and of course NOISE.

There are lots more problems, rules broken, tips, hits, etc coming....including why SKYTRAX give QR 5 STARS!!!!!!!!

I hate it for just one reason, they fly the narrow bodies 320s 321s to most of the Indian subcontinent points. It sucks.

The product is inferior, compare to Emirates which doesn't have a single small aircraft. Its a joy to fly a 777 or 330 which i would say the economy can match the other ones business in terms of legroom..etc

It is now 3 years after the original article was written and all of it is still true. The Supervisors treat you like dirt; they have no idea about how to lead and inspire; the crew live in fear of being fired for making a mistake with a passenger; cabin crew turnover is very high as people won't stand the way they are treated; good cabin crew don't plan to stay with the airline for a long time - just long enough to get experience and then move on as they are treated so badly; and rumours abound about how the airline wins its 5-star award. This pretty well sums up what it is like working for the airline. CEO ... take note, please.

Flown with them before living here and found them to be very, very good.

Food is not that great but then again airline food is like hosptial food to me.

Always got through on time even when in transit and apart from a few rude women on immigration has always received excellent service and had flights that were good.

Somebody at the start of this thread said something about the staff working long hours.

My husband is in his office at 6.00 most mornings and gets' home at 7.00 pm most nights and works six days a week and we entertain for his job during the week.

I am up at 5.00 most mornings and sometimes only finish my work at 8.00 pm and we no way get the same money we would get back in the UK.

However, we are grateful we are working and having a nice life.

QATAR AIRWAYS HAS CRAPPY SERVICES!!! TRIED TO ADJUST MY TICKET TO A LATER DATE AND I GOT A WHOLE BOAT LOAD OF STORIES AND EXORBITANT CHARGES THAT WAS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN BUYING A NEW TICKET. THE RATING BOARD SHOULD REVIEW THEIR STARS AND REDUCE THEM. THIS IS NOT A 5 STAR AIRLINE IN ANY WAY MORE A 2 OR 3 STAR. THEY SHOULD STOP MAKING OFFERS THAT CANNOT BE LIVED UP TO....NOW I AM STRANDED IN A STRANGE COUNTRY (DUBAI) AND I'LL DEFINITELY HAVE TO RESORT TO BUYING A WHOLE NEW TICKET......I HAVE A WHOLE LOT TO SAY BUT THEY SHOULD PLS REVIEW THEIR SERVICES BEFORE THE SHIT HITS THE FAN....

This is why I never fly Qatar Airways anymore.

5 Star my arse I went on a flight once and gave it minus 2 star and have never been back.We sat on the runway for a flight waiting to goto Abu Dhabi for 2 hours because some bloody Person of regional residence could not be arsed to turnup on time.

Mobile phones were asked to be turned off but these Idiots refuse and continued to Text and get calls most of the way.

Never again,I dont blame the staff but the management and culture of disrespect for others!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I go home for a Visit its KLM for me. Nice Planes/Staff and they dont tolerate the piss from Idiots and will remove them from a flight or leave without them...

On Dec. 22 6:30am we checked in on flight 613 in Bangkok scheduled to fly out 8:15. Destination: Athens, via Doha. The plane was basically empty. We departed from the gate, got on the runway only to hear the captain say we were returning because of engine problems.

After a 3 hour wait they said the flight was being cancelled and we would return to the gate. In the terminal the attendants just kept insisting that the airline would address all our needs including connecting flights and travel.

By 2pm they finally got us to a hotel and we got a meal after a 6 hour wait (this would end up being our only meal in 12 hours). We sat a the hotel till 17:30 when they called us up and said we would return to the airport, where they would check us on the next Qatar flight at 8:30 pm. When we asked about what to do about our train tickets from Athens back home to Bulgaria which we would now miss, they said "all will be taken care of in Doha"

We arrive in Doha before midnight and now start dealing with managers who could care less about our problems. They insisted that their only obligations were to get us to Athens and we should be happy that they just get us there safe, no matter how late we arrive. We spoke to 3 managers. They all insisted there was nothing they could do but we could present our case in Athens to the Qatar staff.

The following morning at 7:30 we depart for Athens and arrive in Greece now 20 hours late. On arrival we find we have no baggage. How much worse can it get?

When we explained our story to the Qatar staff, there they listened with empathy (for the first time). They tried to phone the train station about our train tickets but couldn't reach them so they encouraged us to go ourselves and try to get on the train, insisting that our tickets could still be valid. When we arrived at the station, surprise, surprise, there was a big sign saying due to the Christmas holidays all trains are sold out. As a matter of fact we couldn't reserve a seat until Dec. 29. Now we were stranded in Athens.

That evening we managed to book a flight to Sofia for Christmas morning.

The next day (24th) we returned to the airport to see if our bags had arrived, which they did, but one of them had holes in it from the trip. The Qatar staff said that this was normal and there is nothing they could do.

Now we had lost our patience with this airline. We finally arrived home 3 days late, lost our train tickets, had to buy another flight out of Athens and had a damaged bag. All this and the answers they kept giving us was, "Sorry, we wish we could help you but we can't!"

This is not the customer service you'd expect from a 5-star airline. Their cheap tickets ended up costing us a lot more in time and money.

hey guys pls do not get me wrong on this topic. i was only trying to add my experience on qatar airways to this tread.

couple months ago when i flew qatar airways for the first time, i was more than satisfied with their service on board. i even wrote the customers service an email that the flight was very great and that the service on board was unique!

it was only dissapointing for me this time to have paid that amount of panalty fees, because of delay. i travel so many other times with lots of other airlines and missed my flight, but, was never asked to pay any penalty. thats why i was very dissapointed that i was asked this time to pay that amount of penalty fees only because i missed my flight

hope to have a better experiance next time i travel on qatar airways.

fefe .. They have lost their revenue by flying the seats you booked empty.. their loss would be the whole fare of your ticket.. lucky you that they are penalising you such small amount.

Its a perishable product which cant be resold...

No , if they claim, mey be you will have to pay them the full money ..so forget it and next time have proper travel documents ready..

I have had close association with QA employees, professionally and personally.

I can assue you the folowing:

1) All of them live shit scared of losing their jobs.

2) All the managers bully their subordinates, and in turn are bullied by their seniors

3) They are not the professional people they act like

4) The company is in the hands of a group of people belonging to a certain nationality , and they dont care about anything except power and how to use it ti practice nepotism.

I WAS TRAVERLING 2 WEEKS AGO FROM DOHA AIRPORT, MY HUSBAND FORGOT TO MAKE THE EXIT RELEASE FROM SPONSER! AT THE IMMIGRATION THEY TOLD US WE COULDT TRAVEL BECAUSE WE NEEDED TO HAVE EXIT RELEASE. MY HUSBAND CALLED UP HIS SPONSER IMMEDIATLY, SO THEY CAN MAKE THE RELEASE BEFORE WE MISS OUR FLIGHT. LUCKLY FOR US, THEY WERE ABLE TO DO EVERY THING VERY FAST . AS WE GOT TO THE GATE THEY TOLD US NOWAY!!. WE WERE LATE, EVENTHOU WE STILL HAD 35MIN. TIME LEFT BEFOR DEPARTURE.

THE PROBLEM HERE IS, THAT WE HAD TO PAY 500QR ON EACH TIKET, EVEN FOR A BABY WHO TIKET DIDT EVEN COST UP TO 300QR,WE STILL HAD TO PAY 500 QR FOR SOCALLED PENALTY FEES!! WE DIDT HAVE ANY OTHER CHOICE BECAUSE WE NEEDED TO GO ON THE NEXT FLIGHT,SO WE PAID 1500QA EXTRA ON THE TIKET COST! I CALL THIS NOTHING ELSE BUT A PURE RIP OFF!

IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY FOR ME TO GET BACK MY MONEY ????

it seem Feibs have confirmed some of my taught, the bad services are confined to certain flight destination and I think the problem of poor customer service seem to be true to a certain group. Can anyone confirmed this?

My point here is, many people are complaining and yet the rating of QA is high, I suspect that in making the survey or whatever, they confined it to certain flight destination and exclude those "isolated" flight destination wherein they know there are complaints. Just a taught!

Arien, they did give me a seat exchange when I was travelling to Dubai 6 months bac alone wid my baby.At the check-in when i requested for infant seat they said the flight attendants will take care of it.and ofcoz they did(may be they gave priority sinc i was travelling alone. They talked to the person siting at the front row n offered me his seat. But the nxt time while travellin to India (i agree i fortgot to requet earlier for infant seat) the fl. att. dint even care to check or talk to the person (it was a man siting). What I understand from my journeys in QA is that the services only in the flight to India and other such sountries are bad.Every now and then I used to got to Dubai in QA and i always liked their services. But my trip to India was not worth the ticket fare they take. Many had complaints about the services in QA this time.

You are right Feibs.. but No airline would be in a position to give you a infant seat ( front row) when you request at the checkin as you mentioned..

The cabib crew of Qatar Airways is horrible.I am surprized how the heck they got awards 5 years (3 or 5,not sure) in a row.3 months back i was travelling to india with my family n I hav my 7 month old baby also with me.You can imagine how tough it is to manage a baby while travelling. But these guys, the crew was the least helpful.I had requested for an infant seat from airport n the authoriteis said that the seat is already booked but the flight attendants will help me switch seats. To hell with them...They didn't even bother to check or ask the person sitting there to switch seat. One of them even behaved rudely to me when i asked him to help me fasten the infant seat belt when about to land.He was like "i showed you how to fasten it b4 take off." I felt like splashin the glass of juice in front me onto his face! I promised myself that i will try my best not to fly in Qatar Airways ever after. My return flight to doha was in Jet Airways. If anybody asks me which is the best flight i travelled i would surely say its Jet Airways (and ofcourse Air Arabia).Thumbs Up Jet! and Thumbs down QA

going thru the thread.. can see some hatred to the national carrier QA.

They got to improve a lot I agree..and i will never agree they are the best in the region. No where near Emirates and Etihad for sure.. but some comments are just loads of bullsh**t here.

1. QA do not have any old aircrafts as mentioned.

2. Alcohol is served in all airlines.. getting drunk..smoking despite of requests..kids belt.. huh .. blame those uncultured dumbasses who does that..not the airline.

3. Date change fee is there for special fares.. do check the restrictions when you buy the ticket

I rate Emirates the best and then comes Etihad and Qatar airways.. rest are Gulf Air, Kuwait airways, Saudia,Oman air are piece of sh**ts.

Well said... I agree with your point... let me add you my recent flight experience... not Qatar Airways... but its brother/sister Airways... GULF AIRWAYS

It was during last week of Ramadhan (fasting month) I was traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Doha via Bahrain.

It was OK at Kuala Lumpur, flight took almost on time.. few minute late. But once we arrived Bahrain Airport, they directed all passengers to transit lounge and after that they forget us. There were already many waiting... some for more than 20 hours... just to take hour flight to Doha. Once aeroplane came they took only limited passenger(as you mentioned- only passengers from rich countries) we keep waiting .. waiting....

Some tried to complain too... but not of gulf airlines people there... just low-class workers like ticket checkers... name checkers... themselves not knowing what is happening, I just waited and start watching their drama.

I was fasting and I thought that no problem- I am now in Muslim land (ARAB Land) there will be no problem of Iftar (breaking fast) since the time of breakfast was approaching.... but sorry to say that there was no any progress. If the flight was on schedule as normal then our breakfast would be inside plane while flying.

Anyway.. i was thinking that they will give us breakfast in transit lounge, as time passes by all people start panicking, no any progress, even some staff who were handling passengers runaway secretly leaving everybody...

Then AZAN was announced, everyone become angry... but there was no one there to pour your anger.... time passed by and most of passenger (being Muslim and fasting) were kept hungry....even I saw some Arab passengers with us seems helpless.....(may be they were poor Arabs).... Anyway this was my first impression about ARABS and ARAB Airlines how bad they are or they have become.... I have seen Muslim feeling pleasure giving food to fasting Muslim, respecting and treating travelers with ease-this what Islam teach us...

Anyway after 1-2 hours later another plane from Doha landed and we board the plane and headed to Doha....

This was my first and last experience in this ARAB Word.

I would not imagine how BAD we (ARAB world Muslim)has become.....May ALLAH give us HIDAYA....before his punishment avail on us.

than praises. By reading this thread and other threads, anybody will shy away from Qatar Airways but if I would asked all my colleagues in our company, its the other way around, they hate the other airlines and always asked for Qatar Airways. I traveled once and my wife and daughter travelled twice with it and honestly, I find them good and comparable to other airlines such as PAL, Cathay Pacific, China Airline, KLM, Saudia and Etihad. Maybe I have not experienced those horrible things some of you have gone through. AND DO HOPE I WON'T!

Having gone out on the town many times (and staying out until the wee hours) I have seen many flight attendants. Many of them are drinking, with many men, and going wild. I asked one of my friends who the group of wild women were, and they said "qatar airway flight attendants." I was shocked. For the way they looked and behaved, and the way they dressed, I had mistaken them for prostitues. One of the nastier ones was in the bathroom at the same time I was. I asked where she was from. Clearly, it was past curfew and she was beyond drunk. She was east european. Trying to be friendly, but I was just so curious! I asked what she did here, or where she worked. She confirmed she was a qa flight attendant.

Last year I went to QAS to postpone the date from Doha - Mumb. They asked me to pay Penalty around 200 QR. I was surprised wen i heard this. I think QAS only charging for postponing the dates. Other air ways Gulf ,Emirates or others or not charging. So most of the people are prefering to use Gulf air or Emirates or others. They can postpone the travel dates with free of cost. If QAS also follow like this its very useful for all. The QAS service is nice

At the end of the day, what do you really think complaints about Qatar Airways achieve?

Do you really think Qatar Airways is going to tell Qataris that instead of sending their driver with the bags and passports, the Qataris are going to wait in a queue to check in?

Do you really think that Qatar Airways will tell Qataris that the flight is overbooked and that they have to come back later for the next flight?

It's all well and good to complain about the airline, but seriously, do you honestly think that they are going to change? Do you really believe that they will tell a Qatari, to their face, that they can't board the flight?

Qatar Airways is royally screwed up, and I don't fly with them as a result. If they dick you around, time and time again, then my advice would be to find an airline that respects you as a paying passenger.

lol.. Alexa... now I know where to seek the help in case i need to file the complaint.. :)

by the way, my last flight with QR was not too bad at all... i was kind of surprised by their apparently improved service... may be shouting and “fear of losing their jobs” work well eventually? :)

They may claim to have achieved SKYTRAX 5 Stars, but the question is who are Skytrax comparing them with to be in the running for the 5 stars in the first place.

Me and my wife have been offloaded once, and the best part my ticket was changed to the previous date of the flight without me knowing about it and they told me that we had to pay the no show fees!! Then i took the electronic printed copy of my ticket indicating the date and the seat number of our seat which was on the correct date. After a big huge complaint and argument with the counter staff. The guy took the ticket and told me "I'll try to help you get on the flight" and made it look as if it was our mistake for showing up for the flight...??? how can it be my mistake when my ticket is correct in the first place and we never even made any changes ...i guess based on the above thread this could have been one of their gimmicks to divert the attention of the passengers and make it look as if the passengers has made the mistake.

I have also heard the same thing happening on other airlines in the region, if I'm not mistaken it was Etihad, where a friend of mine was off loaded in Dubai and had to take another flight some 3-4 hours later for the same reasons mentioned by the writer of this thread above.

So I believe they may have been given the 5 stars after being compared with the other airlines in the region which may be equally pathetic at times.

"There are loads more rules they break on a daily basis, including passports not checked with identity of passengers," i agree with this line.....coz long back i got to came thru a newspaper that a Pakistani guy lost his life at a road accident...on further investigation it was found that the guy was residing in Qatar for past 15 yrs without any permit..neither resident nor work...n the most unbelievable part is he visited Pakistan twice during his stay at Qatar without any permit!!!!

I think this is to be published in the dailies as it seems realistic for me and the public should know about it. I remember a very bad incident with Qatar Airways a year ago. I was treavelling to Kochi (Kerala) on a Qatar Airways flight in which a friend of mine was travelling with his wife. When we were sitting there waiting for the boarding counter to open the Supervisor of the QR (an Egyptian Lady) came to us and asked whether we are travelling to Kochi. When we told yes she asked for the boarding passes. She collected our boarding cards and studied them carefully. All of us were Privilege Club members and she told us that we are upgraded to Business Class and she told us that she will adjust our names in the system and disappeared. When we approached the Boarding counter the staff boarded my friend and wife in Business Class and they told me that I should travel in Economy as there are no more seats left in Business Class. I had an argument with them and they told me that I am booked in Economy and I must travel in Economy. I told them that they are right to an extend but why did their Supervisor called me and told me that I am upgraded to travel in BC. I told them I would like to see the Supervisor and they told me that she is not there. I was not really interested to travel in Business Class but I asked them to clarify why did they promise me to upgrade which I did not ask. They kept me there and I was the last one to board. There were seats assigned for three of us but what the QAS staff did is that they gave my seat to someone whom they know very well. One of their Supervisors, an Indian guy came to me and apoligized for the mishap. See how they are handling their passengers. Due to their way of dealing passengers to Indian sector in an indifferent way many passengers have decided to change their flights to some other Airlines.

...."QR & QAS Staff have one big fear, argumentative passengers who don’t believe their bullsh*t. This is why there no1 fear is NOT Qatari or American passengers…but the British. The reason is the British know how to complain and never give up, trust me if you don’t fight QR & QAS staff they will not do anything for you."...- lol, i know how to complain and make noise as well when i am not satisfied with the services provided, so they better watch out for me as well....

I can understand where you coming from AAB, like you say until you start arguing you do not get anything. And again descrimination against certain nationalities is a very common thing.

I heard a story from my colleague that a well educated passenger holding a Pakistani passport was denied a transit visa even though he had fulfill all the visa requirements and was booked in a 4* hotel, when he arrived from Johannesburg on route to Islambad.

When he arrived at Doha Airport he was told that they do not issue transit visa's to Pakistani Passport holders. He argued with them that he will have to spend almost a day at the Airport and he had paid to stay in the hotel for the duration of his transit but to no avail. This guy had just done a 12 or 13 hour journey and then was forced to spend another 24 hours at the Airport..

The merciless Airport staff, in the case the Immigation staff told him to stay at the airport. He had plenty of dollars with but still was denied.

That's one unsatisfied customer. But the question is why?

Funny enough all the restriction that you mentione A A B do not apply to flight crew, I have met flight crew gone late into the morning hours at bars.

Your article just shave off the last star of the five stars rating.

PS

Probably, the American was listening the British Argument, he probably did consider it a bunch of bull crap and toddler behavior coming from a spoil grown brat.

I fly Qatar Airways many times. Have a good service from A to Z. I don't know about the other story.

One more thing, for your info, passenger are also entitle for some amount of cash money when their luggage is missing. Just show your luggage tag to the airline rep and they will refund you money.

thanks for the tip

I've been offloaded recently from a flight dubai-doha, just 30min before heading to the airport. An agent called me claiming that the flight was overbooked & first class on that flight has only 12 seats!

off course that wasn't the first time. Last August, i was downgraded from first to business class on a flight paris-doha. Also because of overbooked flight!

I was only compensated with 48QR!!!

Thanks for the post. I just have a request, that you change your nickname to not have this thread deleted by Admins.

That IS interesting about the breaking of IATA rules concerning denied boarding. I'm shocked when any airline rules are broken - they are there for the safety and well-being of the passenger - but in this case, perhaps not surprised. I am just so sorry for the inexperienced passenger who isn't aware of his/her rights. And you have raised concerns about luggage security. I can imagine British Air/Heathrow having a major conniption fit if they knew that unaccompanied luggage was being allowed on board. I hope someone looks into this aspect as well.
