Hi Friends

I am moving to Qatar in a month time, am looking for an advice from friends that do we need to go through any kind of test/exam to get QATAR driving licence, ( I have Canadian driving licence and my wife have British one)
or there is any way to drive with our home country driving licence.

Thanks

Qatar makes its own rules, and you can never be sure what they might be from one day to the next. So that is a definite maybe.

G'day, i'm heading to qatar in a months time to begin work, and the Australian licencing people said that the International Drivers Permit is valid for 12 months, and is all you'll ever need to be allowed to drive. Just as long as your normal licence is with you aswell, apparently there's no need to apply for anything local. Does this sound right??

Margaret is right you do need to register within 7 days so authorities can say you are eligible to use international driving licence.

If you go down this route it allows you 6 months driving without applying for Qatari licence. It will save having to get a temp licence then having to renew when you get your RP.

If you just take your normal licence you will need to apply for the qatari temp licence within 7 days of arrival. It also cost you money each time you renew.

The temp licence is QR155 and the perm is QR150, I think!

Per Margaret's suggestion, you'll get a 3-month license.

After you get your Residence Permit, you can get the "standard" 5-year license.

In both cases, you only need to take a vision test and they take your Canadian and UK licenses at par.

You need to apply for a licence with 7 days of arriving in Qatar. There is a form that needs to be signed by your sponsor giving you permission to drive. I had a Canadian licence, and was able to get a Qatari licence automatically with only an eye test. You will need 3 passport size photos.

You can drive on an international drivers licence and that is easy to get in Canada for a small fee at your local CAA office. Also it is useful to have an international licence for renting cars in many countries. You would still have to register within 7 days of arrival. I think a UK licence is also on the list of countries which automatically qualifies you for a Qatari licence.
