Qatar to Have New FM Stations Soon

DOHA (The Peninsula) • The routine offerings of Qatar's FM channels may soon be facing competition as new players enter the FM broadcasting market.

Mohamed Al Emadi, Qatar Radio and Television Corporation Technical Bureau Director, told reporters on the sidelines of the '3rd GCC Coordination meeting on FM Channels', yesterday, Qatar has submitted requests to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to set up 54 new FM channels to go with the existing 15 registered with the world body.

He said: “Because of the limited FM spectrum, the ITU is expected to grant around 10 to 20 of Qatar's requests for additional channels for commercial use.”

Hopefully the expanded service will include quality in broadcasting and test the revenue market locally for more live music venues/acts beyond Celine Dion and Placido Domingo. It seems that with all the acts that the UAE brings in many acts could do multiple shows to lower the costs of getting all the way out here. Let's face it, if the Qatari's want to take the country to the next level and sell out the Pearl they'll need to cater to a larger palette.

Music brought down the Berlin Wall, see excerpt:

When the rhythms of Western rock groups like Genesis and David Bowie floated across the

Wall, they sparked rock riots on the Eastern side. Angry fans scuffled with the people’s police

[Volkspolizei] and called for Gorbachev-like reforms and an opening of the border.

The FM channels will be free to air. The revenue will be generated from the ads.

If it does work out then we bloddy need to get some Desi style FM Stations...

So boring to drive a car without some good quality radio, only the fu**ed up QBS which is s5it in the mornings...

Now some cool Desi FM Stations (just a couple) should set up the day for a good drive and also help in Promotional Media...

Bring it on Qatar, Bring it on!!!
