The Qatar Ministry of Health Swine Flu Update

By novita77

Update from April 27, 2009 (original file attached):

Human cases of Swine Influenza have been confirmed in Mexico, USA, Canada, UK & Spain with suspected cases in New Zealand, France and Israel.

The Ministry of Health, Qatar advices all residents of Qatar to postpone non-essential trip to USA, Mexico, Canada, UK and other countries which report confirmed cases of swine influenza.

The MoH recommends all travelers from and residents of Qatar who traveled to the above mentioned countries to watch out for fever and flu like symptoms for at least 10 days after their return. If anyone develops fever or flu like symptoms inform the CDC by the hotline 6740 -948 / 6740-951.

Clinicians should consider swine influenza infection in the differential diagnosis of patients with febrile respiratory illness and who traveled recently to or were in contact with persons who had febrile respiratory illness in the above mentioned countries during the 10 days preceding their illness onset.

Please immediately notify all such cases to the Communicable Disease Control Section through the Hotline 6740-948 / 6740-951.

Remember: The most effective way to prevent the spread of Influenza is by:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
  • If you get sick with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Two Indians, one of them a four-month-old infant, are among four new cases of swine flu detected in Qatar, it was reported on Monday.

Qatar News Agency quoted the Minister of Public Health and Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Health, Abdullah bin Khalid Al Qahtani, as saying the new cases took the total number in the Gulf state to 14.

The latest cases include an American child aged 10 who arrived in Qatar from the US on June 17, and an eight-year-old Jordanian child who arrived from Canada on June 13.

The symptoms are just like any other Flu..and just measures which shud be routine are only advised...nothing out of the way..

I wonder why it is that from all the countries that has reported this Flu only Mexico had so many deaths..?Wonder whether there was something else involved..

In the meantime we have more real and present and deadlier(as in causing more deaths) things like Tb,Malaria,Meningitis ...etc,etc to worry about now..!!! abe

This is flu. It happens, will happen again and we put our lives on hold? All of the above is simple good manners which should be done anyway.

In case anyone wants a second opinion on international travel, the World Health Organisation doesn't agree with the Qatar Ministry of Health's advice;

"WHO does not recommend restricting international travel. As usual it is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention."

r7, prevention is better than cure. i don't know where you were during the SARS pandemic, but i was in my country whose neigbor is the ground zero of it while other neighboring countries are badly affected. believe me, the fear is very palpable, the flu medicine/masks in scarcity and airport/ hospital personnel in fear of their lives (and afraid of infecting their families) while continually giving their services. we can't afford to have another pandemic what with the global recession and all that.

an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure...once something like this starts spreading, tring to contain it will be rather hard to do. Nothing like closing the barn door AFTER the cows got out...

What does it hurt to go pro-active on disease control? nothing...

just got an update that states 20 of the deaths in Mexico are directly linked to swine flu, while confirmation is awaited on the others. World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised its pandemic alert level to phase four , in response to new developments in the swine flu outbreak; phase four is characterised by a sustained human-to-human spread of the disease.

There are procedures in place that protect the Cabin crew as well as the pilots, plus people are being screened at the airport as well, they are handing out the protective masks as well on the aircraft itself which are departing from those certain countries...

I think the whole thing is blown out of proportion by the media....

Pandemic doesn't necessarily mean it kills. It means it spread to more than two separated countries. By the way, the Spanish Flu at the beginning of 1900 killed "only" 50 million people. "Until it mutates into something which we don't have a cure for."

By tallg• 29 Apr 2009 12:09

It is curable.

For now.

Like any other countries now, the first line of defence is the necessary screening at airport entry for travellers from/transit the affected countries.

With 7 deaths worldwide, swine fever is dominating world media. Qatar is also issuing insultingly obvious directives. Its a shame they are not so vigilant about protecting people from dangerous driving or smoking, two things that really do kill a lot of people.

Apparently the suspected 150 deaths in Mexico due to swine flu, has now been downgraded to just 7. And as far as I know, no other deaths in the world have occurred from it. The Media is still running on full steam though, as this apparent "pandemic" is a big ratings booster. If it's true that only 7 deaths related to swine flu have occurred, even though hundreds have been infected, than it's no more fatal than the common cold.
