Qatar’s big plan..If You Have time read it...
A look at the ambitious project for the state-of-the-art New Doha International Airport.
The New Doha International Airport (NDIA) is a key project in Qatar's national development strategy. The airport will fulfill three critical roles: for Qatar to be the gateway to the world, to be the hub for Qatar Airways and other airlines, and to serve as a cargo and aircraft maintenance centre.
NDIA will be one of the first airports in the world to accommodate unrestricted operations by all commercial aircraft, including the new Airbus A380 airliner that will soon be added to Qatar Airways' fleet. At opening day (2011), NDIA is designed to annually accommodate 24 million passengers, 1.4 million tonnes of cargo and more than 360,000 aircraft movements

gadarene.. couldn't be more correct.
Dubai is way too close for Doha airport to play the whole gateway card..
Also, I think it is going to be a classic case of overcapacity and waste of money.
I don't see 24M passengers coming thru Doha airport for any reason, at any point of time.
They have to be more realistic..
I work for one of the contractors on the airport.
The PLAN is to have 1st phase (Terminal A and B) construction works completed by June 2011. Then it takes about 6 months until you can call it completion of phase one.
BIG PLAN is to have the opening of first part of the airport on Qatar National Day 2011. Enshallah...
The FULL completion? Probably not many people can say. I heard about 2015.
Cheers.
Nope the completion date is nowhere near 2011 for phase 1. Would be highly optimistic to hope for 2013 completion even.
Originally the first phase was supposed to be completed in 2009, with a runway long enough to accomodate the A380, 3 storey terminal with 24 contact gates, an aircraft maintenance centre, a cargo facility, a general aviation termianal hanger, new QR headquaters building and training facility all completed during this time.
Second phase.(2012) 16 additional contact gates and 5 remote gates, terminal building extension to handle 24 million passengers a year and a monorail to transport passengers through the terminal.
Final phase(2015) addition of 40 contact gates and a further extension of the terminal building to handle 50 million passengers a year. Dont mean to rain on ur parade but all those waiting in anticipation for the 50,000 jobs will have to wait a little bit longer.
I think the streets of Baghdad would be better than Industrial Area
i thought it was 2013....at least the first phase....
2011???...dream on,that was the ORIGINAL date, but slow & steady as with everything else in this town,if my info. is correct,2012 or '13 seems more realistic...meanwhile,next door,DWC-Al Maktoum International when completed will be the world's LARGEST airport, the whole project is TWICE the size of Honkong island...& their A-380 enabled runway is already complete with operations @ the passenger terminal slated for commencing june '10,let's suppose that is delayed, even by a year,it's still june '11

...WAY ahead of NDIA & a MUCH bigger project,Dubai is already the hub for the region,Doha is too close to be an alternative UNLESS they can better Dubai although how one can better the world's largest airport, logistics & cargo terminal next door to them, remains to be seen...hate to pour water on the optimism but yet again,Dubai has beaten Doha to it...& how!!!
means, my husband has to work extra long hours without overtime paid and with no salary increments if Qatar Airways has to compete with other airliners freely ... damnit!!
They build everything twice here...
You can't teach experience...
I used to work there 2 years ago.
They are lucky if they finish in 2013 on the most optimistic estimate!
The plan is very impressive I must admit but it is going to be delayed a lot

The concept of being a gateway is not new.
the airline industry is torn between 2 paths to resolve how to handle the increase in air traffic volume.
1. long haul flights
2. connecting flights ( e.g. gateway airports )
i would put money on long haul despite the lesser degree of flexibility it will provide. As it is , our neighbour UAE are already down this path option 2 which means more competition ( good thing ) but with smaller margin and possibly corners cut ( bad )
its already a hub for qatar airways, and i guess with other airlines required to fufill their gateway to world plan they will need them. QA will probably have the closest gates..
becoming an aircraft maintanence centre really does concern me because it requires high levels of skill and a strong regulatory oversight( for safety) which means high salaried staff and heavy responsibilty. I have yet to see anything like this elsewhere in Qatar and I suspect corners will be cut with unskilled staff and blame apportioned to everyone but those who want to be charge. the culture just isn't there.
Qatar should focus on running an efficient and smooth operation at the new airport and all its ancilleries( better food, facilities, transport and no more spending 30 mins traveling from the gate to the plane! ) first before taking the next step. I want to see an airport like KLIA not Heathrow !
The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.

hahaha Qatar to be the gateway to the world, what a joke!!!
i have gone to the NDIA a few times for inspection work... the main contractor is sky-oryx jv who have subcontracted the construction work to many sub-contractors. needless to say, the progress is slow. looking at it now, i dont think its gonna fly its first flight in 2011.
2011 opening????
Are you sure?

I suppose you mean all type and build of commercial aircraft. All commercial aircraft will mean other operating airlines will provide stiff competition for passengers for qatar airways. Nevertheless, the new airport is good news
