Qatar sinks it's own 2022 bid?

adey
By adey

From today's Gulf Times:

"by 2022, Qatar will have approximately 110,000 hotel rooms and serviced apartments, 90,000 of which have been guaranteed for FIFA’s use during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.”

http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=361447...

So where are the other 1.9 million spectators going to stay? Based on 2 sharing a room, divided by the 35 visiting nations taking part, each team would only be able to have 5140 fans accommodated.
They may have plans for tented villages and cruise ships to accommodate fans. But does anyone know their plans in this regard?
Unlike the recent Visa and the Post-dated cheque issues they can't cancel a World Cup at the last minute.

hope you finished your contracts successfully and good luck to your future endeavours. And if (if ever) Qatar win the bid, hope I don't see you in 2022! Lol! Good morning guys!

At least buying a ticket meant you could enter the draw to win something!

I'm off at end of June...maybe I'll be back in 2022!

The Security Guard acknowledged the ridiculousness of the situation, he knew what was happening, he was only following orders.

The fans area outside allowed us to watch the match for a bit, there was little or no atmosphere there. I'd not directly equate alcohol being available to atmosphere, but I am sure they're related.

rollinstone what makes you think many will be living here for a long time? I for one plan to leave in the next 2-3 years, already there is better jobs, pay and lifestyle in Dubai so I for one will be off....explain your comment

It happened at the Eng v Brazil game as well Joan, people had legit tickets and were refused entry.....we had to get security to remove a load of Qataris who were in our seats and couldn't produce tickets....I heard it was simialr at the football final at the Asian Games as well....this is the result when Qataris try and organise things...

By anonymous• 16 May 2010 22:39

It's the same situation in everything that has been organised since I came here. Buying a ticket doesn't guarantee you entrance.

bea_7 you have made some excellant points....I was in Germany for the last WC and the fanzones were amazing....my mates and I quite often spent all afternoon and night in these zones, plenty of alcohol and food available, security were not to in your face which was great and generally speaking the crowds were well behaved a little drunk but in good spirits and not causing a scene. I know Qatar in their bid have allowed for fan zones but honestly I don't expect them to be half as good as Germany, and you'll be lucky to get 2 zones for the whole of Qatar.....and if they can't get a simple process right like this ticketing issue which happens time and time again them I'm sorry Qatar you don't deserve to hold it....and what a stupid comment from security " a ticket doesn't guareentee you entry"..that is exactly what a ticket does guarentee, does their stupidity know no bounds!

After the Emir's cup I have lost complete faith in Qatar hosting a massive event like the WC. Qatar just have no idea how to host an event successfully. I too bought a ticket to watch the match last night and was not allowed in. That is something you can address but the big question is and one thing Qataris do not understand. Drinking is one the the big things people look forward too when atttending such tournaments. One of the most successful things at the last few world cups is a thing called fan park. To explain, this is outdoor areas where fans who are not attending games gather to watch the game and drink and have a party. With alcohol being such a big thing with most sporting events I just cannot see people coming here and spending their time here sober. You really think soccer mad fans will enjoy that. Food for thought and that is just one of many things that Qataris have not addressed.

If last night's Emir's cup is anything to go by, Qatar still have some work to do. We showed up at 6:30 for a 7pm kickoff, with tickets, to be told we weren't allowed in, because it was full.

When I asked why having a ticket doesn't necessarily guarantee entry, a security guard told me "It's not the cinema". Large queues of people with tickets not being allowed in, and in some cases resulting in minor scuffles between security and fans, shows something has gone wrong with the organisers, and if they can't get that right, how do we expect a world cup?

Whilst I give full credit to Qatar for the excellent sports events they host here, and the fans village zones are particularly good, the reason I buy a ticket and go to the match is to watch people play football live. If I can't do that, then no amount of foodcourt, music and nintendo wii is going to make it a worthwhile experience.

Flor if you had ever been to a WC you would know that it woulkd take qatar more than 12 years to get everything built and in place, read the article at the top of the page, there will be 20,000 hotel rooms left for fans after Fifa take their allocation, and you think that will be enough to cater to fans coming to a WC, get real mate! Most people here are engaged in healthy debate with facts, it doesn't bother me if others don't agree with me....but the likes of you don't even seem to recognise the facts...and since you have never attended a WC you have no idea what you are talking about....

By flor1212• 15 May 2010 09:18
flor1212

yours? That's why I'm asking, will you be happy if Qatar don't get it?

Why is it that anyone who opposed your views, you become aggressive. Precisely I choose Edifis comments because I know he is joking (hope so, but I met the guy already and I know what he meant). Me, all I care is if they get it, better opportunities! If hey don't get it, fine, back to their present status, so what's the big deal?

flor if you actually read what people are writing you would realise this is not been negative, its been realistic...and what is that crap in your last post about hating Qatar...get a life dude...just because people doubt Qatar's ability to host a WC doesn't make us negative or hate Qatar.....take a reality check mate, you are making a fool of yourself with your comments

Raven1968

flor1212 read my comment, I never said anything about my standards, the host nation has to be able to demonstrate they can cater for teams/fans/media...this is a huge undertaking....again if you have ever attended a WC you would know what I mean.....and what tragedies are you talking about?

By flor1212• 14 May 2010 16:31
flor1212

those tragedies on actual games that happened many times. I won't risk my life for such a "crazy" games. Watching it in TV is enough for me!

By Raven1968• 14 May 2010 16:18

flor1212 are you serious "Watching it on TV maybe better than watching it on the stadiums"...you clearly have never been to a WC mate.....Qatar is simply not ready to host a event of the maginitude of the WC, thats not been negative its just been realistic...I have no problem with Qatar bidding, but by putting their hand up to host they then have to convince Fifa that they can provide an event which Fifa and the fans expect....

By flor1212• 14 May 2010 16:06

Let the concerned parties do their thing with FIFA. Unless our opinion was asked officially, then let's think positive. If they get it, GOOD. And maybe you could already plan your retirement by that time because the whole country will be for the visitors and not for ours. And since you are not interested if the games comes here, better leave now!

I dont think you could compare the Asiad to the World Cup at any level, the expectations are much higher, having said that I do think it is a waste of money, a 50 000 Stadium in al khor ? Or Wakrah ? For whom ? The smaller stadiums are empty all the time, so apart from maybe the worldcup these stadium will always be empty.

My best guess would be to invest that money to create some leisure facilities in Qatar, Aqua parks and stuff like that, I still do wish Qatar the best of luck and it is good publicity just being accepted in the bidders club, but I dont see it happening.

Avam you have your head in the clouds, there is no way Qatar could come close to pulling WC off, if you have ever attended a WC you would know this.....and as whyteknight said it was the least attended Asian games in history, so can't of been that great if people didn't want to attend...

Qatar proved you wrong way back in 2006 ASIAD and I am sure it will prove you all wrong once more if it succeeds in getting WC2022.The whole GCC kept their fingers crossed before

Asiad 2006,a small but very resourceful and determined nation. It is not a figment of imagination but I and a majority of the population believe that QATAR can DO IT and not just do it but will sail through with FLYING COLOURS.

Many people do not stay and watch the WC for a full month.

Some will only come for the qualifying, some for the quarter finals and others for the Grand Final only.

So those 2 million people will not come all at once.

I don't believe that accomodation is their biggest obstacle. If all else fail, they can always rent several cruise ships to be harbored here and erecting airconditioned tents just like the Saudis did it every year during the Hajj season.

Building several major (70K plus capacity) airconditioned stadiums and transportation infrastructures (Taxis and private cars won't do) and most importantly convincing FIFA's selection committee is the bigger challenges.

jokes apart...a feasible solution to this would be if some neighbouring gulf countries like UAE, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar go for a joint bid and distribute the matches in the four countries which would take care of all the issues like accommodation, road congestion, other logistical problems and alcohol issues etc.

look what's happening in south africa...the public transport sector has found a good time to call a strike and have stopped work...

dont forget japan and south korea did co-host something like this earlier..
