opened in the 80's, it was a vast improvement on what had existed previously.

The design was undertaken by an American vetinary couple who were very well respected.

When they left, a secondee (Simon) from London Zoo took over.

I expect that the animals are still well cared for but that here is possibly over crowding.

Regarding baboons carrying round dead babies, there was a time when one paticulr rampaging male (who waskilling the babies) was taken out of the communal cage and put in "solitary".

To catch him. they initially used a dart gun. As the problematic male caught on to what was happening, he disappeared whenever the dart gun appeared. A blow pipe (which could be hidden) was subsequently introduced. This proved successful.

However, if you went close to the male, put your hands to your mouth and blew hard through curled fingers, the male went berserk thinking it had been darted.

I remember that their was an english women who was a vet for the zoo. The english are notorious for their kindness to animals.

Oh my! How cruel. And you said parents laugh and encourage them. Thats really very very sad indeed.

It reminds me of a guy I used to know from the UAE while at university.

We have green grass on base...

its nice and they water it all the time...

Then they ask to limit your showers and conserve water LOL

It was hardly fresh fruits and vegetables that I saw kids giving the animals.

Captive breeding programmes you say!! I doubt they even know what that means!!

The thing that upsets me the most is the heat these animals have to endure, at the expense of entertaining people.

Those poor cats in those tiny cages are better off dead then the conditions they are in now.

We could say lets stop all this by not going to the zoo, but god only knows what would happen to the animals....

Having said that I don’t know who are treated worse, the labor workers or the animals...that’s a sad thought ☹

but have any of you been to the los angeles zoo.

I was horrified when I went there and the elephants had barely no water to roll around in on the hottest day of the year. I felt the space was very small for the animals even there and that may of the animals also looks very skinny.

the primates were the only animals with a luxurious waterfall although I felt the space was still a bit to small.

so I wonder if it really is a zoo problem. I much rather like the safari parks here in the UK where the animals have loads of space to run around and be natural.

LOl it does make me laugh when I hear about Qataris feeding the animals. Arabs just love to feed anything. And I can just imagine the qataris.. going awwwwwww poor animals.. lets take the kids to the zoo so we can feed them. And dropping by to get fresh veg just for the animals. MashAllah arabs are so lovely like that.

I went a few months ago. The primates are kept in completely unsuitable conditions. There's no attempt made to justify the place on conservation grounds, and you have to be skeptical about whether the management is acquiring its animals through captive breeding programmes.

About cheetahs in their tanks? are you sure they ere baboons instead of monkeys?

I think it is not necessary to go to the zoo to see monkeys - you can see thousands of them on the streets not to mention theo ones who have tigers in their tanks. lol

Hey pay some regards to this elephant, atleast appreciate his being here in Qatar. Not a nice place or weather for an elephant to be in.

These animals have feelings....

The zoo is probably the most depressing place I have been to in a while. We walked by the baboon cage and there was this mother carrying around her dead baby--- I mean.. don't they check up on this damn animals?? And the cages for teh big cats like lions and tigers are ridiculous. They are so small. Plus, it says No Feeding Animals but do you think Qataris listen? No-- they are feeidng the monkeys popcorn for crying out loud.

Do NOT go to the Doha zoo

Ok for 5 QR it is great relaxing way to pass a couple/few hours. Heck for less than the equivalent of $1.25 even an hour would have been fine. I was surprised after negative comments I had heard at work, how much different it was (at least when I visited in January!) Again though I am the type of person that likes to find out for myself, rather than believe the hype... It is a big zoo with plans to double in size. There are large grooming (beautiful) areas for the Oryx, Gazelles, hippo and elephants. Unfortunately there are smaller areas for the tigers and lion. However, not as small as some zoos I have been too. Yes some of the locals prode and tease the animals, etc. Too while I was there an a couple of expat ladies told her son next time we will have to bring a water pistol to make the lion move (since it was sleepy)... Hope they were just joking.. Shame they didn't stick around because then they would have seen the lion get up and start roaring. Yes I am sure it was probably hungry. Too there is a tunnel with nocturnal animals, and you can go upstairs to look down on the various monkeys and wildcats.

Okay, so it's not the San Diego, London, or Bronx zoo but it isn't bad and it's dirt cheap. So to summarize go and enjoy the animals, the cultural experience, set a good example and ignore those that don't.

i havent gone to the zoo and i wont go to the zoo i have heard negative things about it and i dont believe in zoos ( yep in an animal rights, tree hugging hippy!). however if we dont have zoos then how will children be taught about the wonderful and amazing animal world if they dont see them up close? Im more for safari parks and nature reserves - but then not everyone is lucky enough to be able to afford to go to these places. its a shame that we have to house animals in small cages thou and most of the animals are endangered species in zoos due to humanitys greed.

Qatar has a number of animal sanctuarys if you want to see animals thou , i have seen camels, flamingos and ostrichs in the wild out here thats a much better day out for those who wish to enjoy nature as it was meant to be enjoyed.

Why do you think I brought a girl there on a date. I just didn't know how horrible the animals were treated there. Zoo's are fun. But not this one. Go to a proper one with healthy, well cared for animals.

There is nothing to be right or wrong about a zoo. You either care about animals being locked in small cages or you dont.

As you stated "who cares", so we know your position about this subject.

Thankfully there are many people in this world that do care, otherwise what a sad world it would be.

Not off subject, We are talking about Animal and Human zoo.

Commenly every one is caring animal, there is need to care for humans too.

Treating animals badly is not okay. When we go to the zoo, we could think about reducing meat consumption too. It is enough to eat little of fruits & vegetables.

We could go to the zoo to see animals shapes & how they look like. Probably their behavior is not like the behavior of free animals.

Small cages made them come on street and teasing people walking alone with their dogs :) you know they say why dogs are going along with these people, they belong to us ;)

Just kidding, trying to make charmed feel fresh after she has had a long thread of discussion about the guy who was teasing her.

Yes,I realise he wasn't asking that. This is a forum..ummm...freedom of speech... I was voicing my opinion.

Qatar zoo, like David said is terrible. I just cant understand how anyone can enjoy themselves seeing animals in cages and saying "I like the zoo". Dont mean to offend, I'm just very sensitive towards human and animal rights.

I agree with you sfd24, there should be respect for all creatures, humans and animals....it is terrible what is happening in those prisons. :(

Wellll, then it's not about QATAR zoo.. you're talking zoos in general. Of course it's unfair to lock them in cages.. BUT this is all around the world.. THIS is not what Pyderman was asking about in the first place.

Of course poor animals.. I shouldn't enjoy :-( I'm sorry, animals' lovers.

anonymous

I am Scorpion too..

You are very right, i am agree with you that Animals never be treated like Humans treated in Abu Ghuraib Jail (Iraq),Qandhar Jail (Afghanistan), Guantanamo Bay (Cuba)etc. There must be some respect for Animals as they are not human too.

I promise i'll never go to zoo again and never support the activity which cause the elimination of any freedom.

We have to must think about the freedom of human also.

Thanks for your attention, i always like Austrailans as i worked a lot for BHP Billiton (Australia).

Not so bad for you maybe, but what about the poor animals locked in cages.

Aisha, how can anyone enjoy an outing seeing malnourished animals locked in small cages?

Regardless, all zoos are cruel, and the idea that people enjoy "family outings" at zoo's for their own entertainment is just sick. Unless like David said, you hate animals.

Poor animals :(

Last weekend i was there, my kids enjoyed a lot. Fresh Chicken Tikka was also delecious. Try .... The rates for every thing was veri nominal.Just a simple outing for kids

If you like animals then do not go to the zoo. It is absolutely horrific. The animals are malnourished and kept in cages way to small. I think it should be shut down. I brought my girlfriend there for a date and i was a huge mistake. I almost cried. This is coming from someone who was in Iraq for 13 months. It is depressing and I think that it would be best for you to avoid this attraction. Unless you hate animals... then have at it.

Make yourself Happy and hopefully others will follow.

yes there are monkeys, some with red behinds and some with blue (not sure if its painted), and the poor creature eat all the rubbish thats fed to them by the ignorant adults and kids.

Drive up Salwa Road towards the Industrial Area. Turn right at the castle roundabout. The zoo is about 600 m on your right. Enjoy watching the animals feeding the animals!
