Qatar Zoo

This is not a debate about the rights and wrongs of zoo's in general, but a question over why, if you are going to provide a zoo, such as in Doha, the animals are not looked after to the best standard given current understandings of their needs.

Took Kids to the Zoo this morning- not the first time we've been but certainly the worst experience this time.

It's great that Qatar has a facility but the conditions for the animals have not kept pace with more recent understanding of their needs and behaviours- with the money that is coming into Qatar- surely the zoo can be imporved?

Most of the water based features were dry- so the animals that like to bathe/swim (the elephant, other mamals ducks, geese etc) had no water. Where there was water present, it obviously had not been cleaned or changed for some time- everywhere it was green, dirty, stagnant and full of discarded rubbish.

The elephant  was restricted to a small area whilst it seems some work is going on to "improve" his area and was exhibiting signs of stress and unhappiness not seen before. The dung had not been cleared for several days.

The Croc was in a pool of green slimy and presumably very hazardous water.

Monkeys being given water bottles and plastic bags by some visitors for their (the visitors) entertainment presumably not realising that this behaviour has the potential to kill.

Come on Qatar, Please use some of the enormous influx of wealth to improve and re house the animals into better and more modern facilities more in keeping with your aim to improve facilities and tourism

I agree that for such a rich country Q can afford to make the zoo a better place for the animals. The entrance fee is very low, maybe they can increase the fee and redirect the money to benefit the animals. In Australia the entrance fee is quite steep but at least the money is spent on making the animals lives much better, employing caretakers and providing adequate space for the animals to move...

I wish  the newspapers or someone would do a story of the deteriorating conditions at the zoo.  Usually Qatar is very quick to remedy such situations when it is brought to their attention.  Plus  they are very much into appearances and this is a black spot on their country in my opinion.
