Qatar reveals stadia plans for World Cup 2022 bid

Qatar on Wednesday announced plans to build three new stadia and upgrade two more if its bid to host the 2022 World Cup is successful.

Qatar’s plans to use solar technology to power carbon-neutral technology to cool the stadiums and to make sure the temperature at the games does not rise above 27 degrees Celsius.

If the bid is successful the event will be the world’s first cooled outdoor global sporting event, it was announced at the Sport Accord convention in Dubai.

I'm sure that all realise deep down (or if you are a knowlegable expat, not so deep down) that this bid like the Olympic bid previously is nothing other than yet another attempt at enhancing the image of Qatar on the global platform as a global player and global force and the authorities can't be blamed for that. They want Qatar to be taken seriously and this type of venture is an excellent way of saying to the world "hey, look at us - we're for real" and not just seen a "one trick (Gas) pony" - there is nothing lost in bidding for these global events - the cost is negligable and the impact high but the reality is that the pride of the nation takes a kicking when as happened a few months ago, the authorites dismiss the bid with the nonchalence associated with dismissing a troublesome fly. Unfortunately for Qatar as most of us know, history will repeat itself in December when Australia are awarded the competition in 2022 by a country mile and Qatar looks for the next global event to bid for ................

qatar need to do a lot to launch such a big event, the attitude of locals towards the expats, the entertaiments in here ( there is not even no much FM radio station in qatar for the expats from different part of the world s the best they have got is 97.5 FM that too share with french trasmission from 12:00pm to 4:00 pm and am sure that isint for the french community in qatar it must probably for the few labaneese people who speak french, honestly why isint there a urdu/hindi or filipino FM station when people who speak theese languages share the major population of this country),even the bid add dosent consist of these poor ones,

what about the acceptenced of the western culture when most of the foreigners who visit the country if qatar win are from western countries.

what about the stadiums anyway they cant coduct a football match in any of the skyscraper in westbay

the road network the new D ring road is just not enough they have to do better even with the c ring and can u imagine what would be the traffic in westbay after september when most of the buildings will be occupied they still have got signals and intersection in there

locals are not at all friendly with the expats even the goverment has got the worst rules an expat can never invest in a buisness legally when he is working under a sponsorship even if he did he will have to spend a portion of the profit with his local sponsor i mean why do you have to pay a lazy rich guy who get his share of the oil and gas profit from the govt every month when he had done nothing but signing few govt documents for you if theese guys who know nothing about working hard once start a buisness in any other part of the world will be ripped off because they dont know how to compete but still thay came out of their house to compete with some major countriese of the world to win the Bid for 2022

i was brought up in qatar honestly i wish qatar and the people in here changes a lot i am not an hater of this country or the people in here but really would like to see some basic improvments in here so oneday i can proudly say that this is the country i grew up in

@ whyteknight, spot on mate, they're looking for recognition is exactly what it is,which in itself is fine...only issue,at least for me,is that they're trying to buy it rather than earn it,which is a lot harder to do...

@ happygolucky,if they actually had or do qualify for the World Cup,it would lend their bid some real credibility, they have the money to put up the infrastructure & host the tournament, qualifying would add that the real passion for football is present within the country as what more could express that more for any country than actually qualifying for the tournament?...

Qatar is not ready and needs to bid with the UAE and Bahrain otherwise what will they do with all those stadiums? Look at Athens and Sydney what use do they have for their Olympic stadiums once the games finished and that is just one stadium!

I don't see the benefit to the qataris of the WC or the Olympics. Cam someone enlighten me?

Nice stadium, Khalifa stadium gets so much use since the Asian games, it will be good to have another couple around town!

Such a shame they didn't decide to host it with other nations in the gulf....Who wants to come to 1 city for a world cup? There is a reason why other countries share the bid, i.e. Holland and Belguim are sharing, Spain and Portugual are sharing....The alcohol restrictions and the the rules on women covering flesh will make for a great atmosphere!!!!

Good on Qatar for having a go but honestly!

It has the enriched history, the monuments & the whole population is so passionate about football

Unfortunately, It lacks the facilities & public transport

Well if they are so undeserving then they will not get the world cup but I can't understand what is wrong in them having a dream. Why are people upset that Qatar is bidding for it, they have the money so why not.

Can a a country without money be considered as DESERVING... and can't see any connection in Qatar's attempt to host the event and they being not qualified or qualified to the finals.

You have made a valid point , that there are not much Qataris now passionate about football. Well, it haven’t been this way always. Back in the 70's, 80’s & early 90’s each & every match on both the heir prince& Emir league was fully populated by locals. Some Qataris don’t have that passion anymore because nearly 70% of players( if not more) aren’t Qataris.

But I think this perspective will also change in the upcoming years with the emerge of Aspire students who are raised to be athletics

Sheik Mohammed ( the Emir’s Son) is the mastermind behind this bid, Anyone who knows him can tell you that he’s putting such a great effort & consideration for all the challenges over this bid.

As I’ve written previously, What they’ll present in the portfolio is all part of what is already planned whether we bid or not

So, I still don’t see why are you so worked up ;)

Good news. All The Best Qatar.

To All, please don't write rubish. This is government's decision. You can't speek like that and we are not going to loose anything if Qatar gets a chance to conduct WC. They have money and they can buy the fecilities as they buy you and me.

I have nothing against any DESERVING country winning the rights to host a World Cup but i do certainly have issues with a country BUYING that right based ONLY on their monetary power...if Qatar is to be considered even remotely deserving, they should actually qualify for the World Cup finals,it doesn't matter if they lose every game but qualifying alone will be a true achievement,UAE has done it so has Saudi, even though their campaigns ended fairly early on,they can hold their heads high because they belong to the club of nations that have played in the World Cup...if these guys claim the passion for football is so strong here & they have so much money, how come they've never qualified?...i'll tell you why, because qualifying isn't about how much money you have,it's about training REALLY hard & discipline, something money CANNOT buy & something these guys lack, they just throw their money around thinking they can buy anything & everything...so that,my dear friend Genesis is what's in it for me,the principle of the matter that EVERYTHING CANNOT BE BOUGHT...

By genesis• 29 Apr 2010 06:39
genesis

I don’t understand why some of you are so worked up!??

Do you think the people who’s working on the bid are not aware of all those obstacles?

What’s the harm in dreaming?

Actually, reaching the FIFA final list is an honor by itself.

Unlike the 2016 Bid, Those guys are realistic . They will only present on their portfolio , what will be achievable by 2022 based on UPDA master plans & Qatari Diar, Barwa, QF Ongoing/upcoming projects

Some Qataris oppose the Bid because of its possible effect on the Qatari identity. Those are the ones whose anti-Globalization & anti-multiculturalism

But what’s in it for you guys…whether we win or lose the Bid?

3 new stadia, woo that's a LOT,seriously,i mean they only need one to host the WORLD CUP,right?...i mean South Africa is crazy to have TEN full size stadia & still feel they're short right?...would someone tell these jokers this is not the Asian Games or the AFC or some GCC tournament?...this is the real deal...wonder what they're going to about the atmosphere of a REAL World Cup?...or do they think they can buy that as well?...

@ Lincolnpirate, speaking of the Industrial Area, maybe they plan to ship in busloads of labourers to make up the numbers of "spectators",like they do for all their "world class" tournaments...

Went to the athletics grand prix & was surrounded by these poor chaps from the CDC camp who were just asked to board the bus & were driven to the stadium to cheer, the poor chap next to me was only worried about how he'd get enough sleep before waking up for the 4am bus the next morning to go to his work site...these guys define the term "facade",matter of fact, they take it to a whole new level...

the design is slick & really amazing
