To the Qataris...
Good Day All,
Clearly there has been quite the brouhaha due to some very hurtful statements posted by very few members. Personally, yes this is a "personal" statement, I think the Qataris are completely justified in their reaction and hurt.
Really their State is celebrating THEIR national day, and a few youths sit on cars and all of a sudden it's the end of the world. Last time I checked on "our" National Holidays in North America many of our youths, and people of all ages for that matter, get into their cars drunk and kill people. hmmm...doesn't sound so flattering now does it...but it is the reality.
If you didn't want to celebrate with the Qatari people than stay home, who goes to a party and complain's about the host?
Most Qataris AND expatriates were very pleased with the outcome of the National Day Celebrations. Unfortunately, a few ignorant loud mouths spew their hate and make it look like every Westerner or expatriate shares these views.
In particular I find the member who posted the initial thread, PM, to be a very hateful personality in general on this website and doesn't contribute anything constructive, but rather taking every opportunity to generate hate and stereotypes...scary she is an educator here.
QL has done a lot of good for the local community from making information easily accessible, blood drives, cleaning up beaches, distributing food during Ramadan, and even helping to bring the community together on issues like the occupation of the Palestinians.
There are Qatari members on here along with Westerners, Asians, Latinos, Africans, etc.
This is a GLOBAL online-community and Qataris are more than welcome.
My advice to the Qataris, don't fight QL, join it! If you have a perspective that you want shared: voice it.
FYI - Qataris have bee very dynamic members of this community since it's beginning. i.e. honorable mention to Pittstop and Aisha.
I do see the Qatarliving team trying to remain neutral, but they have taken action against toxic threads and other toxic members.
Once again don't take a few ignorant individuals to be the majority.
But do join us, I think all of us would like to hear more from our Qatari neighbors, not just in regards to political/social issues, but anything and everything.
Remember Qataris, Qatarliving is your community too and you are all always welcome.
In peace,
Mira
For every story there is a perspective, some interest and very much a personal goal, apparently someone forgot to close this thread, since it is dead water under the bridge. There has been casualties, but in reality the writter is just a light weight with too many personal issues.....
Thanx Pitstop sweet of you :)
Eco if you have decided to hate someone then I can't help it.. I can't reveal his personal life here else would have explained how much he trusts a Qatari and how much he loves Qatar..
http://skadian-lifeinqatar.blogspot.com/
you should know the differnce between fun and abuse
Eco Boston made fun of American National Anthem not Qatar's.
I meant stevil who called Qataris barbarians..
I know Boston personally and he always tells me, Never worry about anything in Qatar, you are among Qataris, you are among friends... He trusts Qataris the most...
http://skadian-lifeinqatar.blogspot.com/
the one who abused National Anthem
quoting you
Someone who called Qataris bad names is still around and PM is not
For what I gather in bits and pieces in information about the reasons for Banning PM from QL, I'm assuming some people got fed up with her posting.
Rest assure I was not able to read the whole thread involving the case, because that day I was on the road enjoying the national festivities, yet I did witness some ignorance driving and some minor miss hasp, but it happens every where and any where.
I do believe PM brought some real life issues and situations in QL that were contradictory to others believes or culturally backwards to others. Yet her whole purpose was to bring peace, good balance and equality to others. That is just my Opinion.
Sadly enough, some other people would love too hang PM in person or expulsion from Qatar.
Just because they consider her a "bad apple for the existent society of Qatar." They better rethink themselves as aliens in this country.
Please correct me, If I'm wrong Ms. Mira, Are you born in the USA?
Just remember this fact,
"What goes around comes around and it will bite you."
WORDS ARE JUST Words!
Actions speak differently.
Definitely there is too much transvestism and masquerade dances going around in QL. Venice is under water.
Mira as for you,
How many QL members have been banned from QL, just because of your dislikes?
It is just an impressionist assumption, maybe in this moment in your eyes, I'm totally wrong.
It must be nice to be married to a Moderator of QL to have that kind of influential Austin powers. I saw the movie it was very funny and shaggy.
I think your finger pointing at PM might have lots of blood and flesh between your nails of other former QL members. Hopefully A manicure will white wash my lies.
Maybe my nose is not growing large enough or fast enough?
Just call me DR.Nuts for know on.
Respectfully
PS
I still love my country even with its own perfectionism.
Do you?
Someone who called Qataris bad names is still around and PM is not. I don't think I have heard more praise about Qatar and Qataris from anyone else, She does love Qatar and it's really unfortunate the way everyone is blaming her for everything.
http://skadian-lifeinqatar.blogspot.com/
Wait a minute Texas Ranger, why don't you try first... we don't bite.
Not everything is our fault... and we all share the blame for not interacting with each-other more than what we're doing now.
Welcome back QatariLady
smacks of self-censorship...
and I am very disappointed in a lot of people here because of it. The complaint was laid not on QL, but in a newspaper where the complainant could not be questioned about his/their statements.
This is a farce in the good-ol' tradition of self-censorship....Even George Busg would be roud of you all.
And to lay this on the doorstep of PM is totally misreading everything that went on here before.
Baloney, absolute baloney by grandstanders.
[quote greentea] "we have high expectations about Qatar and its people, we put them in a pedestal and expect them to be perfect and free from committing errors"
Yep.. In the absence of serial killings, teenage school shootings etc, a reckless driver can hardly pass unnoticed :)
it will be a regular recipe here. Learn to adapt with it! What's being said now is the reaction about an action. Live with it! I never saw that thread but I could imagine the content! Know very well those people mentioned (at least in the forum).
"I'm back, simple as that"
I hate the fact that some people can't take criticism well. Are we gonna start banning posts now? The only reason I'm in QL is the freedom of speech, besides that, there's plenty of other websites with much more attractions. I vote for NO CENSORSHIP!
thumbs up to Mira, agree with you.
I agree totally...
Yes, it isn't Ok for a Foreigner to voice out their opinion let alone criticize. Is that what you want to hear? I know many of the girls that got offended, and I understood why. In the initial venting post that was put up about the traffic, the sarcastic tone and the words used weren't flattering. They were put down in a moment of anger, and it opened doors to all the narrow minded, racist, arrogant members to take advantage and attack the people involved in the celebration and not the event itself.
An example, a mother could beat up her child, but when anyone else starts to hit - it all stops. I can insult my family, but I get offended when others do. Its human nature.
We ALL criticized many things, but when a Foreign person did, it struck a nerve.
This is a public forum, but it is about life in Qatar. Be careful and be respectful. Simple.
Good morning to all.
i am qatari
and see that non qataris not entracting with us
specially westrners.
Well, they are more than welcome. But I don't see many of them on this forum. I haven't met a Qatari in person. It's high time they started interacting with other nationals & voicing out their opinions or else they would always be misunderstood.
With you on that Amnesia.
There is a very fine line...between free speech & an insult.
A man's freedom ends where another's rights begin.
I think it's about time somebody shook things up.
Hopefully what's happened will wake up some critical members into realizing that if you want to run a forum there's a fine line between freedom of speech and disrespect.

eve and khawaga lol, no comment
gica contra, definitely, love is in the air :)
...listen to the sound of silence....
Does that mean people will also boycott the Arab papers?
That's pretty common, actually. We all point out our own flaws, but heaven help the outsider who points out our flaws!
Its OK for Qataris in the Arab papers to write they thought the behavior of much of the young people and the traffic etc was bad but if an expat voices concern you get angry, whats wrong with this picture? Is this not being a hypocrite, its only ok for you to address the concerns and disappointments of the day? We all know their are trolls that deliberately write hateful things to wind people up and they got ya. My husband is Qatari and he was upset at the way people were behaving and the lack of police and the chaos was 3 days not 1.
Yep, love is in the air...
I am not afraid of qataris... ;)
temper is something u cant get rid of... by loosing it...
RichieRich, yes, we're done with the bashing for this month, we just started the Loving.
LOL....there's no question of me being jealous or anything.but yeah, she is a really sweet girl.and i'm sure u'll love her too :-)

bleu, skip the men then.... but your women? i agree with alexa
If wearing black will soften the way to friendship, i might try but that would not be realistic :(
...listen to the sound of silence....
nice initiative...
........................................................
svelte, will you be jealous if i ask you to share your qatari friend with me? (im a girl, dont doubt it :)) well, no qatari colleagues as ive said... but i always encounter them in my workplace, just dont know how best to approach them for friendship
...listen to the sound of silence....
Is this the month for Qataris?.do i miss something?

jokes apart, the girls here are a bit defensive when it comes to sudden casual friendships.they are all raised to stick within their circle of friends.but friendships with expats also happen.usually at the workplace....like what happened with me.one of my best friends is a qatari girl and i must say i adore her to bits! :-)

Thats the spirit , Mira. Join the debate and make your voice known. Don't let the haters get you down. Speak your truth quietly, clearly.
And why this comparison with the West?
"If we compare ourselves to others, we will become vain & bitter because there will always be greater or lesser persons than ourselves"
So
Marie, try it, and post your experience here. Forget about the guys at the malls, just like most men, they only want one thing...
Wekl said bleu. We are the guests, you are hosts. The onus is on the guest to know the hosts and not the other way around. Apreciate what you and a few other Qataris doing in engaging this forum.
Time to start learning my Arabic.
Cheers

Bleu,
honestly, these whites and blacks scares me...
They might look at me strangely if i approach them and ask for friendship, don't you think? whew!
...listen to the sound of silence....
evryone has right to celebrate their national day. & qataris ve too. it depends on them how they celebrate the day. & it happens just once in a year so whats the problem.. if any one ve problem they stay at home please. becuase qatar is their country & they have right to celebrate in their own style.. & please stop this topic..

well svelte, i hope i wont end up in a hospital for being serious, but i really want to know how 1 can befriend a qatari (girl, since i'm one :))
we dont have qatari colleagues for one.
so QL is the best place i think, if they're willing to interact with expats

go to Villagio or Landmark in the evenings,marie_2....i'm sure u'll find plenty of them :-)

LOL, I know...
so can we meet at admiral or corniche sheesha :D
AstroGirl,
We do, and we are here... just remember our total, including children is around 12% of Qatar's population, and many of us don't speak English.
I blame the expats for being too afraid of the Qataris: to talk to them, to know them, to socialize with them... We don't have to do it, you do.
AbuAmerican, This is not gitmo... time for some waterboarding.
i would agree for the Qataris to join the discussions in QL because this makes this site diverse. Any other nationalities are welcome here, no individual qler owns this site. This was made to promote public awareness in different aspects...
in each of the posts or comments, lets just not attack the person but just the comments itself...
Professionalism is for everyone...
temper is something u cant get rid of... by loosing it...
can we have at least show the spirit of christmas, i know some of us doesnt celebrate it but for us the meaning of christmas is love, peace and sharing. at least we know love, peace and sharing not unlike here when i am reading thread there's always discrimination, argument, fighting. have we ever think of ourselves in shoes of Qataris? or how do we feel if we saw in the thread that our nationality is being discriminated or put in the topic? it hurts right? its the same way the Qataris feels and we don't want to happen they will come up here and start to reverse the situation. its better to take action before anything goes wrong.
and one thing i learned wanted to share to everyone. "always give respect to others for us to receive same respect we wanted".
DON'T LET FANTASY ROB YOU OF YOUR REAL LIFE BEAUTY
No one should be misbehaving on this forum, using foul language or otherwise.
If ANYONE wants to share personal opinions which are offensive to someone's race or religion, blog it,or email a friend, don't bring it here, because we are all sick and tired of reading insulting and hateful comments.
Keep - QL - Clean.
I support rigorous administrating of the QL forum - although I know that may not be feasible. And I am grateful to the Admin for all of their efforts.
But frankly, if people want to sit and bash Indians, Philipinos, Qataris, etc. Let them do it on their own space, generally they make harmless threads toxic and unproductive.
I support a clean, friendly, welcoming QL. I'll stand by that and I DON'T CARE if others have a problem with that.
thumbs up Sugar Qtr. well said

no one stopped Qataris to join this forum. its their choice and their choice is arabic forum which i have seen they are busy 24/7 on it. they don't like to socialize with non-qataris so how will the expatriates know about their culture. just by reading billboards and tv shows and ads and luxury lifestyle doesnt explain every bit of their culture.they need to mix up with the expatriates tell them walk them show them.
pm isnt responsible only there were others who posted on that topic and made it worse and got it to this point that hurted every one.
so much for freedom of speech when some one tries to shut your mouth then you cry where is freedom of speech and when some one talks then you guys feel insulted.grow up all of you.
a member just described how she felt that night and you all agreed to it. and now you all got against her. now i think every one should be happy after she got banned.
Wow, sugar Qatar, if that's what you got from my post than there is no point in engaging with.
in every word of yours.
thanks for the post.
National Anthem
has she been banned already??? :-o i just can't seem to open her profile....

Well I say, you don't know me, and no one else does. So who cares!
The Qatari girls have all the support they need to pursue their education an take advantage of opportunities when they arise. Nothing new in that. I know I don't need any more support because I have my limits based on my faith and respect for who I represent in my country.
Are you saying that you are glad that the local Qatari girls are voicing out their anger in such a disrespectful manner? Is that what you/people call independence and confidence?
~*Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret*~
FU , whats wrong in verisimilitude stated. He is right. Like Bleu said it was mild from the part of PM which was blown by those users and they got away with it.

lets just stay focused here the point is we do want more Qataris to feel they are welcome to QL. That's all.

ban PM... even if she gets another ID, doesn't matter... its the statement that matters...
the same applies to stevil09 and Alexa who too made disparaging remarks on that thread...
Mira,
I just saw your thread, and I wouldn't blame PM for what happened on that thread... she started it, but it was mild criticism of what the teens were doing...
Other users blew it up, and it really exploded after the BB broadcast.
Sugar Qtr who do you think is encouraging that behavior? No one on this thread is. I would like to see these same Qataris become regular contributing members, I would like to hear them voice their opinions and ideas on a range of issues. I don't want to see them simply join a community when they feel they are being put on the defense.
You don't "personally" know me sugar qtr, but for the Qatari women who do know me and worked with me, they know that I support Qataris in becoming independent, vocal, confident individuals who pursue education and opportunities wherever they may be. Which is what I am doing right now.
Sugar Qtr, respect! You're posts are ones of the most rational and good sense things I read in QL. Two thumbs up!
Asking QL Moderators to become more rigorous would be difficult, because the members will have almost every other thread deleted. We have a common Pinoy Bashing thread, Indian, Pakistani, Muslim, and many others follow.
Would that make everyone happy? Control from higher Authorities? Many people complain about rules and laws of the State! now they want them on QL?
~*Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret*~
Mira, no one is asking you to respect anyone but yourself. When you do, you limit yourself from doing or saying wrong or hurtful things. That is how I see it.
The Qatari friends that were offended by what was written should have registered and argued with the insulters. I am ashamed of how some new members joined to attack by addressing direct insults and name calling on a public forum. As girls, we should never put ourselves in that situation, and as Qatari's we should always hold our heads up high and not insult our upbringing by responding in such a manner. Foul language will never be tolerated and it isn't something to be proud about. Patriotism? Says Who?
~*Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret*~
Catsniper I agree admin should become more rigorous in keeping these threads clean. People should blog their prejudices not try to provocatively engage others on a community website.
Arien I agree that many people contribute to hateful discussions it can't be just one person talking to themselves.
that was a good one greentea... always remember that when anyone points a finger to anyone, the other four fingers points to him...
for her road rules are very important here I will support her fully her thinking at this time matches Japanese and I adore them.
She is not racist and not envious
She is here on different mission which we all are aware
Sugar Qtr maybe you should address your fellow Qataris, not me. I am not looking for "fame or fortune" as you put it, just trying to console many of the offended Qataris. I am also, like many here, separating myself from the hateful comments posted about Qataris.
Why? Because I have many Qatari friends and colleagues whom I care deeply about and don't think they should be disrespected because they gave us an opportunity to work in their country.
I wanted the Qataris to feel encouraged to join us on QL and not segregate themselves.
Those were my intentions.
And quite frankly do you think I developed my views on PM from this past weekend? No, it's been watching her covert methods of trying to encourage hate and discord between people on this forum, over the past year.
It's great you respect someone like that, but I don't.
True and agree to Mira , except few points.
1. Cant blame on PM completly - she voiced her views based on an incident on the day which may be true. BUT shouldnt have generalised though. We all were on the roads and had no problems and enjoyed it along with the locals.
2.who made the thread dirty- It was not PM but few users who were never questioned by the admin, which was wrong. So the so called toxic members, as you termed, were the culprits who shouldnt have spared.
Hightime to stop whining on silly things and move on.

The point is, How can we convince our Qatari friends (who think QL has to apologies for few troubled souls) that QL as a whole community website has nothing to do with the hatred comments rather those were individual comments. and to avoid this kind of situation in future, QL admin have to do an on time accurate censorship job as well.
A man chases a woman until she catches him. ~American Proverb.
Mira, whether you have fans for your post or not, does not give you any right to attack any member on Qatar Living. It will not bring you fame or fortune; on the contrary, you are a disrespectful person and you are a hater yourself.
Allah taught us to be good, kind and forgiving.
I have been reading the comments and threads about this National Day, and as a Qatari , I was horrified by what I saw during the weekend. Comparing us to the West does not make us more civilized or mature.
This issue has blown out of proportion and I think it should all end while its still at the beginning stages. As Qatar Living members, we do not have to defend ourselves. All the accusations are true to some extent, but we all can't be held responsible for what others think or type.
PM has contributed in the growth of many many many students in Qatar. She was respected and loved by all the students for her teaching skills and her love for her students. All that shouldn't change because she just voiced out her opinion.
Many local journalists said the same thing in the local newspapers, why wasn't that criticized and blown up into WW3? Its because its journalism and you should learn to deal with situation and make them better.
PM, my advice is that you ignore all that is being said. You have apologized too many times already. I am happy that you feel bad and great regret for what you have addressed publicly, and to me; that is enough. The anger isn't towards you, but you pointed out the weakest link for the attack.
Sorry.
~*Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret*~
Very well said Mira...
Some people just like to mess up QL with all these bashing threads.
In addition to Pitstop, Aisha..Diaimond we have some Sensible Qatari guys like Genisis, bleu, Curiousbutdetermined.. who really know to voice their views about their culture and country and other issues without personal attacks.
I apologize for sounding like a cheerleader...just trying to support the positivity :o)
well said greentea!
Thank you formatted soul and I completely agree. Too bad, because QL is such a resource for so many people and I know I use to find information on everything. I am not the most active poster but I still enjoy the informative or insightful posts.
Qatar Living is for everyone - Qataris, Expats and anyone interested in Qatar as a country. So let's keep the community healthy and free from trash talks... guys, let's all be constrcutive and mature individuals...
One thing i noticed about us non Qataris, we have high expectations about Qatar and its people, we put them in a pedestal and expect them to be perfect and free from committing errors, which is not right. We tend to forget that they too, just like all of us, are human, capable of committing mistakes and failures. They too are like us, we want a peaceful place, a peaceful surrounding, a better camaraderie with everyone regardless of race.
Catsniper I agree, but I also know some Qataris were very hurt by the insults and it had dampened their high spirits after their holiday.
So do I Appleornothing :)
Good that you initiated it. I was thinking someone had to do consolation particularly referring peninsula report. to be more specific hatred / positive , whatever for that matter any comments were sole expressions of each individuals. QL website is nowhere to be cornered because of very few spoil sports.

Mira,
Your unnecessary and unfounded personal attacks discredited you!
I hope Peninsular gives publicity to this thread as well
Now we are talking - for a few days I was in despair thinking we are gonna lose QL to some donkeys who don't know how to value a good forum.
what personal information? I know you are an educator because YOU posted it on your profile!
Um yes Nic, I do know PM and DON'T like her.
And maybe PM should bring all her negative issues to a personal blog than a community website. The website does have a purpose and it's not to spread hate, which is what I and many other believe she does covertly.
This is the last statement I will post about PM because this thread is for the many Qataris who have been insulted and feel this is the general sentiment of the QL community...which it is most certainly not.
another qler? And what about divulging personal information about another qler?
Would you like me to be banned and just create a new identity like everyone else on here? I'm sure that can be arranged.

Mira,
What you said about PM is not fare.
Do you know her to write those insults?
If you have been around QL for a while, you could have easily reached the conclusion that PM is an intelligent woman with integrity and principles and definitely not a racist or a hateful personality.
Common, you could have addressed the issue without finger pointing.
She is not the root-cause of the problem!
Please walk your talk!
thats VERY WELL SAID...!! I share the view..!!
