By Gypsy

I just got a text from someone at QAWS that they are on fire. If you can, please head out there to help out, if not, spread the word.

(if this turns out to be a hoax, don't blame me)

I've contacted the administration at my employer to try and spread the news amongst my colleagues as quickly as possible. I've also got connections with other educational facilities which I will also inform as to the need.

I know it's early days, but if QAWS could post an email address or telephone # where people could call a central number to offer help? Just a thought. I'm just sick thinking about those poor creatures.

Truly heartbreaking. I feel sorry for those poor cats and kittens. My family went there once and adopted a cat. The lady who runs the place is doing such a wonderful job. I'll call and see what I can do for them and call friends who are animal lovers to get involved.

I've just gone ahead and spread the word on Facebook, myspace, twitter, ILQ, some mailing lists etc...

Everyone, if you've got some time to spare, let's build this place bigger and better!

...and see what they can do at work to help rebuild the facilities. I will get back to you all about it once I get a chance to explain the situation and we can work out the best way to get some outside help.

Very sad news indeed :(((

What I mean is:

Everyone helping out to build the animal house wherein wood, cement and other housing materials could be pooled in and people who knew carpentry, could help build that part that got burnt?

Come on...it's Thursday and some of us have 2 days off. A few hours to lend a hand wouldn't be that much to ask. and of course contribution to but the housing materials.

It's just too terrible to think about, all those poor cats trapped and burnt alive. How sad that the hard work of all those dedicated helpers, volunteers and supporters has been destroyed. What an awful loss. I know QAWS struggles to survive and get enough money as it is, so how on earth are they going to be able to afford to re-build and continue their most necessary work? Time for everyone to pitch in and dig deep in their pockets.

Holy Smokes!! What a disaster :( all the poor kitties lost :'(

Just got off the phone with Xena, she's not very sure but seems like the fire started coz of some electrical problem. Hope they get all the help they can.

I went out to QAWS today. Yes, the structure is virtually a total loss. It's my understanding that all of the dogs were saved - but the cats, rabbits, and most other animals were lost.

I'm told the cause was electrical. Apparently there was a significant rat problem at the facility; it seems the rats chewed through some wiring, and that sparked the fire.

I understand that there are still a number of dogs that need to be fostered or re-homed; the QAWS number is given in several above messages.

I've heard that they have a most pressing need to find homes for the dogs, so if you've got a yard or a way to care for a dog, your help would be most appreciated.

If you can help, please call 539 6074 or go out to the farm.

Yes, according to the woman on the phone, none of the cats survived :( Which makes it even harder as I think more people would be eager and able to foster a cat. Dogs are a bit more work, but such lovely pets!

I have three friends on their way/already there. The cat shelter has burnt down, with the loss of many, if not all, of the stray and abandoned cats and kittens that were being looked after there. I understand that most of the dogs and puppies managed to escape but now have nowhere to stay. Until a new shelter is built or other temporary accommodation is found, it's certain that QAWS will be seeking volunteers to help foster them for at least the short term.

If you feel you would be in a position to look after one or more of these dogs or puppies, please give them a call.
