QAWS joins forces with WSPA

By Chelsea

The Qatar Animal Welfare Society (QAWS) has been appointed a member society by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), granting them access to expertise and knowledge that officials hope will help to further develop animal welfare in Qatar.

QAWS chairperson Janet Berry explained that the new relationship between the organisations should assist volunteers and provide information to contribute towards the growth of animal welfare in Qatar.

“WSPA will help us to source equipment and train our members to use it,” she said, adding: “We have no dog catching equipment in Qatar at all, and at the moment that is our top priority.”

“To be accepted by WSPA is a huge pat on the back to us - it shows we are doing something right!” she said, adding that “they have seen all our processes, policies, rules and regulations and they have handed us this member status.”

WSPA’s programme director for the Middle East, Trevor Wheeler, said: “WSPA is happy and pleased to welcome QAWS into the global network of animal welfare organisations.”

“The appointment of QAWS as a WSPA member society has doubled our representation in Qatar and strengthened the animal welfare movement in the Middle East,” he said, adding: “We look forward to working with QAWS and the government of Qatar.”

Still rebuilding following a fire last year, QAWS have recently constructed a new facility to house 40 kennels. But the high demand at this time of year means that there are currently more than 60 adult dogs in those kennels.

As well as the dogs, the group is holding 26 puppies in a portacabin, whilst two other sections house 40 kittens and cats.

Berry explained that the summer is the most difficult time of year for the shelter, due to many people leaving the country and abandoning their pets, and the lowest annual rates of adoption.

She stressed that introducing the pet passport scheme in Qatar would help to reduce the number of animals abandoned here, as expatriates would be easily able to take their pets with them when they leave.

However, this remains under consideration by the authorities.

Although QAWS is full past capacity, people continue to dump their animals at the farm or in other places.

Berry described one of the newest additions to QAWS, ‘Trolley’, a Japanese Spitz Mix found in a trolley in the carpark at Landmark Mall, suffering from extreme heat exhaustion.

“He was left with a bottle of water in the trolley, but unfortunately he didn’t know how to open it!” joked Berry.

She aded that since rescuing the dog, they have discovered that the canine is severely visually impaired, which may be the reason why the dog was dumped.

QAWS is now looking for a new home for Trolley, and hopes to see him re-homed in the near future to an owner who can offer him the care he needs.

Another case of animals being abandoned was a group of kittens which was dumped at the shelter with a note saying that they were found with their mother in a garden.

However, the 12 kittens were left motherless after the adult cat panicked and ran away, leaving the kittens to fend for themselves in the heat.

And despite not having the room, QAWS could not refuse the kittens.

Soaring temperatures are more than simply an annoyance or discomfort to animals in Qatar - they represent a serious health risk, and Berry noted two cases of dogs dying having been left outside by their owners in recent weeks.

She said that the pets were found dead after only a couple of hours outside.

Berry said owners must keep their animals indoors at this time of the year.

“They simply cannot cope in this heat - especially if they are used to being kept indoors with air-conditioning,” she said, adding that dogs should be walked in either the early mornings, or late in the evenings.

“Dogs’ feet can burn on the pavement at this time of the year,” she explained, urging people to do their utmost to keep their pets safe and healthy this summer.

....catweasel, I absolutely side with your input. But unlike you, I'm not happy dia2000 has stopped contributing to this thread. I wanted to hear more from him. I feel his sentiment to a great degree, and simply think it's a matter of prioritization, and contributing at a basic level, which he hasn't denied.

and i must add if more people in the world were compassionate towards animals they may show more respect to humans as well.. we as humans have a responsibility to help animals as it's normally 'our' fault they are in the trouble they are in. But I think he's stopped reading and quite happy he snook off!

....dia2000, as much as I wholeheartedly agree with you on the bit about Qatar and Egypt and the rest of our region (in fact we need to learn to integrate with the rest of the world) yet I highly and seriously disagree with your remarks about animal welfare organizations in Qatar.

I cannot stress enough the major importance of such organizations. They're not only extremely needed, but commended and we should, at the very least, be thankful for their pursuit. They work in awful conditions already, so let's not disrupt their endeavor and encourage them instead.

It's part of our duty to not disrupt the balance of and protect all living organisms. Currently we are in breach.

Forgive me, but your comments are irrelevant to this topic.

QAWS and Team .... hats of to you guys for your non stop efforts for the welfare of Animals in Qatar.

This is also a part of one of our religious duty.

Welcome to QL, new user, obvioulsy someone who has simply joined QL to start a fight (again) about QAWS. We at QAWS accept that we cannot please all of the people all of the time and posts like yours are "the nature of the beast" in animal welfare.

NB: QAWS cannot be a business, everyone at QAWS is there on a volountary basis striving to achieve charitable status. (We are getting there, at last).

Please move swiftly along......you are ultimately affecting the animals with this rubbish.

i read your comments. A person who is caring and loving animals can defenitely love humans too. Dia2000 opnion is good at the same time you should think that there is plenty of charity organisation around the world to protect human. It is the government's look out to take care of their people. You are telling that here animals are safe. How can you say that? Are they safe? I am feeding daily more than 30 cats on streets and recently I found many kittens not even one month old with broken eyes and limbs in many areas. I have approached many people to help but due to non availablility of spaces I am forced to feed them on street after my duty hours. At the same time due to scorching heat these poor creatures do not get water even if water keep outside it gets warm soon. Other wise the vessel will remove by cleaners. At the same time i have seen many cats the muncipality catches stay in small metal boxes in one room for operation. I do not know during holidays they get water or food. Many a days it left me sleepless night. We humans can go and ask anyone or beg to get food but these poor creaturs can't speak or beg. Some arrogant drivers even drive their vehicle over this animals. All living things have right to live in this world like humans. This is not an argument.

What does nationality or religion have to do with any of this?

At the moment you're coming over as rather racist for a save-the-humans kind of guy.

There is no US and THEM. It's attitudes like that, that start wars. We are all on this planet and we all have the same responsibilities towards ALL living organisms.

We do not discriminate over which animals we help. Dog, cat, hamster, horse - if we can help it, we will.

We do not discriminate over which nationality or religion we help. If a Qatari, Philipino, Austrailian or Russian calls us for help - we give the same help to all. Christian, Buddhist or Hindu - everyone gets treated the same.

We believe that everyone should be equal, and in that sense, everyone that visits QAWS gets treated the same. We never ask nationality or religion when rehoming or rescuing an animal. We never ask why people are living in Qatar. We are all here for different reasons. Our main purpose of still being here after 8 years is because of the work we do with animals. It's certainly not for the money. Why are you here?

If QAWS & Dogs in Doha didn't look after the animals in Qatar - who would? We help the animals in whatever country we are in. I've even helped animals whilst I have been on holiday. There is no YOURS and OURS. You bleat on about racial segregation, why can we not just help all and any animal that needs us?

If you think the animals in this country (or Egypt) are OK then you need to open your eyes and have a good look around. Actually read the article in the opening post that tells of a blind dog abandoned in a metal shopping trolley in the midday sun. Why should I help someone who is cruel and evil enough to do that? We're here to try and stop things like this happening.

I don't deny there are thousands of people that need help. We all do our bit for humans as well - but our focus in Qatar is to help the thousands of animals that need us.

QAWS is not our job - it's something we do because we want to, in our spare time. Some people collect stamps - we rescue animals. I'm sure you spend hours every day helping people, like we each spend helping animals.

We are proud to be a member of WSPA and we are greatful to the hundreds of people in Qatar that support us and help us rescue animals.

It's a matter of priorities... even though we care about animals and humans at the same time, but I am just talking about priorities....

If your son or daughter is shoot by an Israeli soldier and at the same time your dog or pet is shoot by another soldier and you were asked to choose to donate blood to ONE of them... What will be your decision...????

Dia, many of us ARE involved with both human and animal welfare. Please don't assume that we are not caring for and about humans because we happen to be talking about animals in this thread. We're pretty good multi-taskers! (And yes, I have worked with an aid organization in Palestine, you?)

To be honest, I like animals way more then I like humans.

There are enough human aid charities in this country and around the world - go and join one of them.

We've decided to help the creatures that are constantly over-looked in this country. We're not asking for your help or your input. This thread is a celebration of our achievement in getting member status to a very well known international welfare organisation. If you don't wish us well - then stay off our threads.

I think it is better to concentrate your efforts to protect HUMANS who are facing a lot of torture, discrimination, hunger and miser all over the world. It's a good idea to have organisations to protect animals, but we must set priorities. Is it right to protect an animal or to save the lives of thousands of humans that re killed or tortured daily in Palastine, Afghanistan, Africa and Asia....???

Let's be responsible for our human brothers before we talk about the misery of animals.... it's ridiculous!!!

well,it's very touching to hear about animals left behind this unhuman way.we live my husband and i in a stand alone villa,we built a room in the garden with airconditioning to accomodate cats coming from nowhere.actually we have around 16 between adults and kittens,we feed them all as well,we treat the sick ones,we do this because we love animals and we appreciate those who cares too for these little creatures thrown in the desert.we wish all the best for this organisation and all the people who really cares.
