Qtel already upgrades ADSL Speed?

Look at the image above! WOOOOOW. Is this permanent? For the past years, my torrent download speed is maxed at 65kbps. I am using Mozaic so my package is 512kbps. I was checking my torrent today and was surprised to see one torrent downloading at 77kbps, with the other 2 downloading at more than 15kbps each!

I also tested the speed using speedtest.net and got a significant bump from last week's result. Last week, the top download speed was about 300kbps or .3Mb/s. Now, there is a 100% increase and more. Check out the image below and behold.

QTEL ADSL
So is this the "upgrade" that we're supposed to be seeing from Qtel. If it is, I am one happy customer! Check your ADSL speed and tell me if you're experiencing the same thing

its a good news/bad news story. Yes they've doubled the speed, however if you are a long way from the exchange, the connection will not be able to cope with the increased speed and the internet connection will drop off.

I've had little or no internet connection for the last 2 weeks (since they generously upgraded the speed!!!!)

I went from base speed of 2 meg (doubled became 4 meg) and have now had to decrease the original speed to 1 meg (doubling now makes it 2 meg), and it works again.

If you're having issues talk to Qtel.

Just tested my connection. Still at 2MB/s and I powered off my router for a few minutes before restarting and checking.

Its really disappointing considering there is a huge Qtel tower and comms building right next to my compound here on Al Waab near the stadium.

Its nice for the speed boost, but its still extremely overpriced. I was paying less than half for a 4MB line all the way back in 2004 in the US.

Confirmed.

The ADSL speed upgrade will effectively double Broadband speeds for ADSL and Mozaic TV+ customers, free of charge, with immediate effect.

With the speed upgrade program, customers currently enjoying speeds of 512 Kbps can migrate to 1 Mbps without any additional charges, retaining the competitive price of QR200 a month.

This same speed upgrade is being made available for customers of Mozaic TV+, which will now come with 1 Mbps as standard.

Customers using the higher 1 Mbps or 2 Mbps service can move up to the 2Mbps or the new 4 Mbps service – without additional charges.

Qtel will now phase out the 512 Kbps service, and deliver 1 Mbps high speed Internet as standard. Customers will be able to deploy the 1 Mbps for QR200, 2 Mbps for QR 300, and 4 Mbps for QR 400.

Bleu how can they upgrade users from 1mb to 2mb charge them 300 bucks and leave 2mb at the rate of 400 bucks then? They should have increased it to something could be 3mb or 4mb but i doubt its 5mb. Either that or there are NO 3 options just 1mb and 2mb for 200 and 300 right?

I agree about the cost issue, its ADSL is much more expensive than the UK, USA and anywhere in Europe. But when compared to other Gulf countries its apparently not that expensive.

A reason might be economies of scale? and infrastructure? Qtel has to lease everything. While bigger companies can set up their own technology?

The reason people criticise Qtel is that they offer a poor service and there is no alternative supplier.

In the UK, BT offer unlimited usage of an 8mbps broadband connection for 100 QR/month [source]. Qtel's base package costs twice that and offers a fraction of the speed [source].

You might say: "Well that's just the UK; they are obviously going to be cheaper." But I can't see why. There doesn't seem any solid reason why Qtel costs more, and offers less. Well, there are a couple of cynical reasons I might suggest: that they are scalping customers to exploit their dominant market position, and that they have underinvested for a decade in capacity building.

No they are not limiting torrents, as I said I get full speeds on torrents (since I use private torrents, ie I pay for them, there are heavy seeders in the States and Europe using seed boxes capable of uploading at speeds of 100Mbps.

My friends also tried the torrent sites and got their full bandwidth speed.

By force1• 15 Apr 2009 11:08

that's not how speedtests work...my connection is half and Mb and im getting 65KBps which is correct. Even when you download from something hosted by Qtel, you are still only going to download at your max speed. Just because you're downloading something hosted on qtels servers will not download at a faster rate than the bandwidth assigned by qtel.

i use private trackers when it comes to torrents, so I always get max speeds. I have friends who have the 2Mb connection, and they are getting 200KBps (they have always been getting that).

My ADSL has never had any problems, except during the cable break-up, so I do not see why everyone runs around criticizing QTEL.

By ngourlay• 15 Apr 2009 11:04

When I was still editing The Peninsula's technology supplement (before the inmates took over the asylum), I asked Qtel whether they were limiting bandwidth for specific applications. Here is their response:

Qtel is providing full and equal capacity to all sites, including high-bandwidth file sharing and video sharing sites, and will continue to increase the capacity provided in-line with its ongoing investment in its network.

The only exception to this approach comes in periods of extreme and unusual network strain, such as the challenge created by the breach of the sub-sea Internet cables in December 2008. In these instances, capacity provided to some social streaming sites – such as video sharing websites – will be limited in order to provide maximum capacity to business applications and e-mail. These limitations are lifted as soon as is technically possible. (Full capacity was restored in Qatar on January 6, 2009, in the case of the cable breaks).

Qtel aims to provide full access to customers to enable them to run applications and services as they need them. The company has invested over US$3.2 billion in technology infrastructure for Qatar, as part of the Broadband Qatar strategy, which aims to fast, reliable Internet access at high-speeds for people across Qatar.

I think they are limiting torrent, but it's difficult to design a test. Any suggestions?

By ngourlay• 15 Apr 2009 10:59
ngourlay

missing the point...

Who cares what the speed is between you and Qtel?!

What proportion of websites you visit are hosted in Qatar? Zero.

The bottleneck is not the ADSL line, but Qtel's cable links to Europe.

I now have one megabit to Qtel, but am still only getting 25KB on torrent. That's because of cable capacity and (I suspect but Qtel denies) traffic shaping by Qtel.

Gulf Bridge won't launch the new cables for another couple of years, so it's only going to get worse, no matter how fast your connection to Qtel.

Once I remember getting 200 to 223kbps on Moziac....a month after the cable broke last time....

Qtel's censorship filter caches the files that speedtest tries to download, so the test doesn't measure what you think it measures. It only measures the speed between you and the Qtel censor filter, not between you and anywhere else in the world.

I am suspicious of using Speedtest.net. I'm more convinced by the actual download speed of my torrent. Currently getting 124kbps from my usual-never-changing 65kbps.

Probably they're starting with Mozaic customers since we have better lines than those on usual ADSL connections. And it shouldn't matter if your cable box is turned on or not. The cable box has a different setting and allocated bandwidth than your ADSL. So it's not true that if you don't use the cable and turn it off, the bandwidth allocated to it would transfer to your Internet line.

Qatari,

Sorry forgot to mention... I'm on Mozaic. So my speed should just be 512kbps. I can't edit the above so if you can add it there somewhhere, I'd appreciate it .

Thanks!
