question for RAV4 / CRV / Outlander owners

i am looking for a small SUV, and have read that the above don't have real 4 wheel drive capability but rather good all wheel drive performance (the reviews i read referred to them as soft utility vehicles).

i am not looking to go dune bashing or any serious off road stuff like that. what i want is 4 wheel drive that is good enough to get to the inland sea, the secluded beaches off the beaten track outside of doha, etc. (the stuff you would do with a small child)

is the all wheel drive on these good enough for that, or is it more for city driving in rain?

i am down to the V6 outlander or V6 Grand Vittara (Vittara seems to have the best 4 wheel drive performance of the lot) but if the 4 wheel drive is really not suited to anything other that bad city weather i will consider a big car instead as nissan has a good sale on 2007 models right now.
