Right to die!
Read an interesting article about a lady in the UK who has had the words "do not resuscitate " tattooted on her body.
She wants the doctors to allow her to die if in an accident or life ending situation. She is scared that she might end up a vegetable or dependent if she recovers.
My question - Would you want to be allowed to die. Should such an instruction be heeded by the Doctors who are duty bound to save the lives of patients?
people are getting mixed up between mercy killing, suicide and assisted suicide - this none of these; this simply states that if I am dying don't bring me back to life. For the religious amongst you who have said that only god decides when someones time is up, think of it this way: you are defying his will as clearly he has decided the time is now, if you recusitate and bring the patient back to life then you are defying god's decicion. Now, this woman's decision is to tatoo herself is clearly nonsense because she provides no details, eg. the 'living wills', as they are called, have to be a document legally recognised by medical authorities stating under what circumstances you would not wish to be revived - clearly if she had a clearly recoverable minor heart attack in the street she would change her tune and the paramedics would quite correctly ignore her silly tatoo.
I don't know if some are confused but like what I said this only applies on patients with paper works done legally. If she got into a car accident medics will still save her because its they're job no one's going to let her die just because of a simple tattoo. What would happen if the relatives of the victim tried to sue the medics who didn't try saving her? As long as there's no legal paper works like the doctors who ask for the signatures of the involve persons letting her die would be criminal.
I would agree with you on this ..
My grandparents were 92 years old, I'm quite certain they knew what they were doing. They knew they weren't burdens, but they has already lived long, eventful lives and didn't want to end it as invalids or as vegetables. They had their pride.
I think it should be ignored. The duty of Doctors is to 'first do no harm'. It could put Doctors in a very precarious legal position. What this lady may think is her end - may not be. People can and have survived terrible illnesses and injuries and get better and live full lives.
Humans live and survive ONLY on HOPES
I think some people are confusing the issue. This isn't about KILLING someone or suicide, this is about LETTING SOMEONE DIE when they are already dying of natural or accidental causes. When the lady tattooed "Do not resuscitate" she means, should my heart stop and I'm dying, please don't bring me back from the dead so that I can only "live" with the help of a machine. Both of my grandparents had do not resuscitate orders and we respected that, and when the time comes I hope my own children will respect my descision not to resuscitate. I don't wish to live the rest of my life attached to a machine or in a vegetative state, more so, I don't wish for my children to have to live with that.
Its good than eternal suffering….. such patients with no hope of recovery should be allowed to die at their own wish.....If I am in such a condition I would opt for euthanasia.
Good point jjj75, we put down animals because we can't see them suffering but are happy to let humans suffer
I hope and pray to be kept alive as long as life is whats best for me and caused to die only when death is better. Being dependant and in a vegetative state is horrid but so is dying when I could have clearly been saved and continued to live a good life.May a doctor or anyone else never have to decide wether or not to keep me alive...Audubillah! My late uncle always hoped for a quick death and thats exactly how he wen't. As a Muslimah thats what I constantly pray for... a death that is easy and free of suffering.
social civil offense
surprised to see when people will learn to LIVE
Could this then be construed as suicide and open to legal actions ?
What about the wishes of the next of kin..
We put animals down when their quality of life deteriorates but we do not apply the same moral code of conduct to ourselves
She have the right not resuscitate but I think that only applies to patients who got the paper works done by they're doctors not by an ink on her body...
Thanks Tinks !
