Saudi builds world’s first underwater mosque

Saudi Arabia has built the world’s first underwater mosque, according to reports in an Arabic newspaper.

A group of divers from the kingdom built the mosque using plastic pipes filled with sand under the sea off the northwestern coast of the town of Tabuk, close to the border with Jordan, Almadina Arabic language daily reported.

“One of our colleagues came up with this idea last summer and we decided to carry it out,” diver Hamadan bin Salim Al Masoudi was reported as saying.

“We have just completed the construction of the mosque… when we put the final touches on it, it was time for afternoon prayers, so we performed group prayers in the first underwater mosque in history.”

The trend for underwater structures comes days after the shipbuilding arm of Dubai World announced plans to build a series of underwater hotels in the emirate.

In a statement released on May 2, Drydocks World said it has signed an agreement with a Swiss contractor to develop the World Discus Hotel, which is partly submerged under the sea.

The world is filled with all types of purposeless buildings and structures.

What might seem trifle and unimportant to you could very well be someone else's source of pride.

EMC, there is nothing funny about hearing the call to prayer underwater, I would imagine it like astronauts in the outer space who perform prayer, timely.

Divers wear diving computers around their wrest (with compass and digital watch attached), they know the prayer time ahead, and will perform it when time is up.

Just a note, technical divers stay underwater for very prolonged hours (think of pilots on long flights), they might not want to miss on their prayer(s), and some pleasure divers DO pray underwater in their own way.

Remembrance has no preconditions expect having an open heart..:)

Britexpat - How is it an architectural achievement? To me,it looks like a product of teenage imagination. It wouldn't even classify as architecture.

Got to agree with Happy Happy. A great architectural achievement but nothing of significance religiously.

A monument is a type of structure either explicitly created to commemorate a person or important event or which has become important to a social group as a part of their remembrance of historic times or cultural heritage, or faith simply for boosting torusim or an example of historic architecture.

The wortld is filled with monuments of all kinds, the Egyptian Pyramids, the Greek Parthenon or the Moai of Easter Island , the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower.

What is my thinking to build a mosque is really a good .but if these rich conutries who dont know how to spend this lots of money they are preparing the diamond and platinum cars.but when ask them for poor country charity they give money but not like they are spending on this type of usless and over budjet expances project.

they run to build record the biggest the largest underground over the ground on every idea they are spending money but muslims are going down to the poority line they dam care.

Allah give them this money for muslim ummah not to make their name.

this is only my personal thoughts not to hurt any one.thanks.

nomerci, no harm at all..:) In any case, there is a long list of hazards they divers will need to look into before praying in there. It is not like the bottom composition would always allow a diver to be in full control over themselves. Any they have to be a wreck dive specialists for starters.

Happy Happy, I think it is more meant as a novelty thing than as a serious place for worship.

As long as there are restos in plenty, specially serving SL food, why learn to cook?

I can't imagine people going to pray in there either on a regular basis, but I wonder who they might hire as the head imaam. How cool a post that would be!

Idea is good, but practical no. I dont picture people putting on diving suits and going to pray in that mosque 5 times a day.

Fathima..did you add learn to cook to that list of things to do before you turn 50?

By Happy Happy• 10 May 2012 13:43
Happy Happy

nomerci, exactly. I like the idea. It blends well with the Saudi culture, and let the guys there get a chance to do something out-of-the-box. However, to me it is void of any religious relevance, as one can pray anywhere, at anytime, facing any direction.

brilliant idea there nomerci...the worlds first underwater nikah!

Hmm and the purpose of this would be what? BTW i dont see any link to the source of this news, and if this is what the mosque looks like then all i can say is LOL!

Innovative and creative. Has it been approved by the respective Ministry? Are women divers going to be allowed to pray in there?
