Saudi man married Filipino for her kidney

MANILA: A Saudi Arabian man married a Filipino woman as a cover for buying her kidney, trying to circumvent the Philippines' strict new rules to

fight organ trafficking, officials said on Monday.

The man's transplant was blocked by authorities, but the case shows the difficulty the Philippines faces in fighting rampant trade in organs fueled by wealthy-but-ailing foreigners buying kidneys from impoverished Filipinos.

A human rights group says it has documented nearly 200 poor kidney donors recruited by organ-trafficking syndicates in a single province in the last few years.

Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral said the Saudi man applied for a transplant at a government-run hospital, listing his wife as his voluntary donor. But hospital officials became suspicious when they learned the couple had married only recently and that the husband spoke no English or Tagalog, while the Filipino wife spoke no Arabic.

"Clearly, it was not a donation," Cabral told a news conference today. "It was actually organ sale."

The Saudi man's transplant application was rejected two months ago, though neither he nor his wife faced any charges. Neither would say how much the woman was promised in exchange for her kidney, Cabral said.

Justice Undersecretary Ricardo Blancaflor said the transplant would have been allowed had the marriage been authentic and if there was no commercial transaction involved.

The Philippines was named the No 5 hotspot for organ trafficking by the World Health Organisation in 2005.

britexpat,

I agree too.

But my story is a different type...

When he first met her, he did not tell her anything about his health conditions and he went through a lot to get her a leave from KSA besides paying for the ticket, all out of sympathy.

As I understood, she was the one keeping in touch with him through e-mails, and eventually it seems they both fell for each other before she knew anything about his kidney.

The way I heard him talk to her by phone several times only shows he is crazy in love with her.

Also, please note that it is not generally easy for certain people (such as a project manager) to get evolved with a maid and end up marrying each other.

He is even proud of telling his story whenever someone asked him...

I believe I witnessed true love, but maybe I am too soft!

Excellent.. BUT , the sad fact is that the original story is to do with two parties entering into a partnership, not for love , but for mutual benefit.

The story of the Lebanese guy only goes to show that not all marriages seem they way they are told.

When I met him, everyone was telling the "marriage for kidney story".

When he told us the real story, I believe that it was totally twisted by others.

Though rare, good stories with happy endings till happen.

lady would agree to marry such a man or that he forced her to donate her kidney later after they get married. There might be some kind of agreement between the two. I'm not on her or his side, I'm just trying to analyze what is happening here.

Sometimes stories like that posted just as it is without knowing the details of what is going behind. To them it's an incident, they just post it like that then you will find people here fighting trying to defend, being with or against the two parties.

In the end, what he did is not acceptable even if the lady agreed to that knowing that she might been abused because she needs the money.

I worked in KSA for about three months during which I got to know a Lebanese project manager very well.

He witnessed a fight between a Saudi family and their Philippine maid and at the end, they threw her out of the house. He tried to talk them into taking her back but they refused and out of sympathy he took her to his house, got her a leave permit and paid her ticket back to the Philippines.

They still communicated through e-mails and he explained to her if he could get a kidney donor in the Philippines.

She got all information about his blood group and other tests and after some time she told him she found someone and that he only needed to fly to Manila.

When he got there, he found out that she was the donor and that she insisted on donating to him to repay for his courageous gesture back in KSA.

He agreed on one condition: that they get married, and they eventually did.

Now they both live in KSA and have a two year old kid...
