The thought of an 80-year-old man bedding down an 11-year-old girl is disgusting. But there are those who still justify marrying pre-pubescents for cultural and religious reasons, in spite of the dangers and moral issues involved. Saudi Arabia seems to be the most prolific when it comes to those kinds of situations, or perhaps it’s just because they have more vocal human and children’s rights activists that protest such unions. But as much as those activists protest the practice, it still continues to this day. Fathers, and it’s usually the father, make deals with older men to marry their little girls, the mother and the little girl object, but the courts rarely do anything about it, since the Saudi government has yet to regulate underage marriages.

http://www.alarabiya.net/articles/2010/01/17/97613.html

Married or not... its still pedophilia. And it seems that there are plenty of people, who see nothing wrong with it.

Human Rights Commission will now investigate the situation, but it isn’t until the Saudi government makes laws banning underage marriages will little girls be totally safe from selfish greedy fathers and dirty old men.

Note: This is not a religion bashing thread, its a social and cultural problem with the society

im sure no one here will have the guts (or stupidity) to mention a rather historic version of a similar story, at least in regard to the age of the girl

i dont think the age difference is the problem. i think the actual age of the girl is. how an her father say she is "fit" for an 11-yr old (to be married)? her body is not even fully developed yet!

More than 8,000 girls under 16 became pregnant in 2007, the latest figures estimate. Conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 12 to 15 in England and Wales rose from 7.8 in 2006 to 8.1 in 2007.

it is still happening in 2010......really amazing!

Women empowerment and strict laws could defend such insane and inhumane activities.

Give a life to a Girl child, educate and make her independent to take decisions. Don't take her childhood in the name of religion or culture or tradition.

It is more to do with poverty, ignorance and uneducation.

FS, One in million can have such sick mentality. The one who weds is not the only culprit but all those who helped it materialise. Law can help stop this nonsense but it doesn't follow from the religious think tank of Saudi. Hwnce awarness is more important than law..

Note: This is not a religion bashing thread, its a social and cultural problem with the society

Culture, society views, laws and practices are a result of religion especially in Saudi Arabia. I know you want to be political in your thread, but let's state facts like they are ;)

I am not saying let us bash religion, but like anything in life, any religion can have in it certain gaps or human miss interpretations.
