Send books not guns, Malala Yousafzai pleads at UN

With a maturity and poise that belied her tender years, Malala Yousafzai, the teen shot by the Taliban for championing girls' education stood by world leaders on Wednesday and called for books not guns.

"Instead of sending weapons, instead of sending tanks and warplanes to all these countries which are suffering from terrorism, send books," she pleaded.

"Instead of sending tanks send pens," she urged, her hair modestly covered by a scarf as she took part in the first anniversary of the Global Education First initiative at the United Nations in New York.

Gravely wounded and close to death, the Pakistani schoolgirl was flown to Britain for surgery. She returned to school in England last March, after recovering from her injuries.

"Instead of sending soldiers, send teachers," Malala argued

"This is my dream to see every child to be educated," Malala told the gathering, "This is my dream to see peace everywhere in the world, in Nigeria, in Syria, in Pakistan, in Afghanistan."

"We want women to be independent ... and to have equal rights as men have," Malala said on Wednesday.

"We believe in equality and to give equality to women is justice," she added, receiving resounding applause. "We are here to find a solution for all these problems that we are facing."

UN chief Ban Ki-moon hailed the teenager for "your courage and triumph" which he said "have inspired millions of people across the world."

Even if we consider them uneducated ( though they do study ),

US is exactly doing the same in pakistan, yemen etc.. education don't help.. being a human being helps.. both Taliban and US Warmongers have to educate themselves how to be a human being first than to think of preaching by religion and preaching by bombs. :)

She seems to be so smart, clever and forward looking for her age. While she was talking about providing the means to an education for the worlds children instead of weapons to their armies we had brain washed thugs killing people at the Mall in Kenya and brainwashed guys running riot in Syria

Dont underestimate now :) If they can reach WTC in US and can make videotapes which you can't track the location, do you think they can do it without reading and writing.. :)

Taliban and their opponents, both are extremists.. both of them have to rethink and redesign their policies.

She is only a young girl and no matter what anyone says or do, nobody deserves to shoot anyone. Hence we have a term discipline. I wonder if those people can read or write?

Yes I can imagine what henious things a 11 year old girl did to deserve getting shot in the head by a group of men. (who also wounded some of her school friends).

When will these young girls start to behave properly, if they respected their family and their elders it would not have forced these poor men to shoot her in the head. She should be ashamed of her actions. Wanting to go to school and get an education and speaking out loud as a woman is shocking beyond belief and society will collapse if we continue to do nothing.

Yes RIP, Different people have different Margins.

Doha estate. They did not shoot her because she goes to school.. read the letter from Taliban to her..

However I have no support for Taliban as they dont follow source they claim to represent.. however my above comments are very "OBJECTIVE".

Taliban shot her because they didn't want her to educate, but the Europe & US have given a very big chance to continue her studies, now you tell, which is right & wrong?

er? rb73, if she was being dictated to be the superpowers she would be saying send more guns to defeat the terrorists!

Unles you are saying the US wants to become a major supplier of educational books to Pakistan and Afghanistan. (I doubt it the margins are not as good as weapons)

Her words for UN which has both US and Taliban.

US can spend more on education and healthcare by reducing the sky touching military spendings and taliban have to fight with their own self than fighting for someone else like US/KSA.

Tell Taliban to put down the weapons & start carrying school bags & educate them, Problem solved!!! I don't think it's possible?

I hope the leaders gathered at the UN were listening as the guns and weapons supplied by countries like the USA, Russia and others end up killing innocent men, women and children around the world.
