Sex abuse by women on children soars

Reports of women carrying out sex attacks on children have soared in the last five years, a charity said yesterday.

ChildLine said there had been a 132% rise in reports of female sex abuse made to its telephone helpline, compared to a 27% increase in abuse by men in the same five-year period.

“Most sex abuse calls to ChildLine come from girls saying they were assaulted by a male,” said Sue Minto, head of the helpline.

“But a growing number of callers now say they were sexually abused by a female. Many would find it shocking that any woman - let alone a mother — can sexually assault a child. But they do.”

Britain has been stunned by a number of high profile sex abuse cases involving women in recent months.

Last month Vanessa George, a female nursery worker and a married mother-of-two admitted a string of sexual assaults and making indecent images of children.

One of George’s two co-accused who admitted similar charges was a woman.

ChildLine said last year it had heard from 2,142 children who said they had been abused by a woman, almost a quarter of all cases where the abuser’s gender could be identified.

The report said 1,311 children said they had been sexually abused by their mother, 61% of calls about female sex abuse, although more than twice as many said they had been abused by their father.

“This report reveals that ChildLine, by listening to the direct and authentic voices of abused children, has shattered common myths about sexual abuse,” said Esther Rantzen, President of ChildLine.

“It does not only happen to girls, as many people believe, it happens to boys too. Mothers can sometimes sexually abuse their sons.”

I agree with Olive it may be that there's just more people reporting it. It is horrible thing and I hope that no child has to go through this trauma

Nope I can't. We are not going to have a case study on me.

Anyway my point of telling it was, it can happen anywhere but often it goes unreported.

Rezymalik - you need to get over yourself. I know of someone in the UK who was sexually abused, by none other than a guy who was visiting from India - but I suppose he only did that because he was so bloody macho.

Navdak - Good on you for turning your life around.

I wonder if there's actually an increase or if there's just more people reporting it. That's the problem with sex abuse statistics, they can only be counted if people report it.

I do yearn for an innocent childhood sometimes snessy but other than that I am fine now... I do wish at times that I should have told my parents about it but well past's gone now.. Whatever happened has happened..

rezy it's not about lack of macho men but it's more a mental sickness some people have.

Navdak, I'm really sorry but I'm so shocked, I don't know what to say. I just hope it didn't affect you too much in life. I'm not going to lie and say I know how you feel, because I don't.

Absolutely shocking - how anyone can harm a child is beyond comprehension.

Britexpat - it's not abuse, if you enjoyed it!

OMG navdak you were abused by a woman from your neighbourhood. Do you mind me asking how old you were, and how close to your family she was? Blimey how many other QL'ers have been abused, and how many would admit to it?

Seems to be happening only in Britain, britexpat. Is that the reason why you are here now?

This is indeed surprising. What is the possible explanation. Is it that these women are becoming frustrated and unable to have a relationship with men ?
