SEXY & FAT

It is possible to call you sexy even you are weighing 200 lbs, having waist line of 40 inches and your belly is sluggish (FAT) (the only dress you can wear is XXXL)?
I think sexiness is all in one’s mind. If you have the confidence to view yourself as sexy, it naturally comes across - you don’t apologize for the way you look, instead your whole appearance shows a firm belief in your own desirability.

I’ve always said I could be knock-kneed, cross-eyed and balding and still be one of the sexiest persons one can meet.

Obesity / being fat is not healthy? yes , how about if you are suffering from illnesses... anyhow, how i viewed with obese persons as long they carry themselves with confidence and poise they are sexy...

Interesting articles, but not a lot to do with dieting. I'm yet to see any scientific argument that links increases in HUMAN metabolism to premature ageing, but it would certainly put a whole new slant on the argument for regular eating and exercise!

From my point of view, people who live a healthy lifestyle, eat properly and exercise regularly (i.e. most likely have a higher metabolism) generally look younger and healthier than those who live a lifestyle much the opposite.

metabolism is the major player. I can eat a whole tub of ice cream and nothing changes, matter of fact, my family goes thru 4 different ice creams less than 5 days, hmmmm, yummmy. But brandylady is right, exercise is very important--im still working on that one though

is a killer, I believe that we are what we eat, yes some do have a slower metabolism than others and don't burn off the calories to the same degree, but eating unhealthy foods and little or no exercise puts a strain on our hearts, blocks arteries etc.

Often it is a vicious circle, someone goes through some sort of trauma in their lives and turns to food for comfort, starts putting on weight, no longer feels good about themselves so eats again for comfort, never ending circle.

People are what they are, their minds, character and personality is what makes them sexy, not size or body shape.

Osman - faster metabolism does not mean a reduced lifespan, I have no idea why you think that. The metabolism in question is the ability of the human body to break down food into fuel and burn it up effectively. An example of your metabolic rate changing is when people try and "diet" by drastically cutting their food intake and virtually starving themselves - the body's metabolic rate drops, as the naturally instinctive reaction of the body is to reserve as much energy as it can. In this state, the body will start catabolism, which is where it starts burning muscle instead of fat - muscle is easier for the body to burn off, and it saves the energy stored in the fat for later. So if you were dieting to get a toned beach body, starving yourself is absolutely the worst way to go about it - instead eat plenty of protein (i.e. lean meat) and keep your calorie intake below your BMR (by anything up top 500 calories).

And no, I haven't been looking at Wikipedia; I've been reading about this stuff for quite a while - it's just something that interests me, that's all.

@ Cornellian

Of course it's down to metabolism. But metabolism isn't set, it can be altered based on the muscle mass and eating habits of the individual (I'm leaving out various disorders and stuff; I'm happy to admit I have zero knowledge in the field of genetic disorders). That is why, for example, body-builders can stay lean whilst eating 6000+ calories per day - with the amount of muscle they have, their bodies are like metabolic furnaces.

Also, it's generally recommended to eat 6 meals / day, not 3 small ones, in order to maintain a constant metabolism. Usually, these consist of your 3 main meals with 3 smaller meals / snack meals between.

There is a hereditary element, yes. Some people don't break down calories/fat/glucose/chocolate digestives/etc. at the same rate as other people. So, in order to NOT put on weight, they have to regulate their intake. Soooooo, if calories intake is greater than the expenditure (BMR * standard work load factor + exercise allowance - some daft constant I can't remember), based on a standard person with no genetic disorders, mutations, etc. then the calories will get stored. As blubber.

And thank-you very much, I have done quite a bit of research on this topic.

Hello everyone, and I read a lot of your opinions some of the are great and others are not. Now it is my turn to put my two cents in on this blog.

I'm a guy that weighs 200 pounds, but I work out and have a great outlook on life. I think comes down to associating yourself with right people that respect, care, and enjoy your inner and outer strengths.

In my own country I have no problem speaking with and dating girls they actually refer to me as big sexy. I know that great conversation and laughter goes a long way in culture.

Perhaps some of the people who wrote a comment do not what is like to be big. Those "people" really should not be voicing there opinions but they have no idea what is like to be in that persons shoes.

Sincerely,

Mr_rob, ultimately it all comes down to metabolism; afterall, that's the whole point of food: to be broke down into fuel the body can use. Different people metabolize food at different rates, and the enzymes involved in metabolism are coded by genes. So basically different people can eat the same thing, yet it's broken down differently. For example, there are people who eat alot and gain no weight because they have high metabolism rates and vice versa.

So weight is not only to do with eating and exercising. There is a hereditary component! Go research it if u don't believe me.

Oh and here's another thing, it also depends on the portions eaten. It's better to eat 3 small portions throughout the day, rather than only one big portion cause it gives the body time to break-down. I guess that explains why the French are skinny lol.

Thanks cornellian for clarifying "the genes", it seems some people here seem to know more than the half a dozen doctors my niece has already seen and diagnosed and since you are in the medical field ill take your word for it..

p.s if someone is overweight and feels sexy, then i say good for you, stay that way regardless of how others make you feel..

By mr_rob• 18 May 2008 14:47
mr_rob

@ Cornellian - how can you say obesity is genetic?! Sure, genetic disorders may result in slower / altered breakdown of various bits and bobs, but ultimately it comes down to taking in more than your body is using - that's down to choice, not your DNA. And we weren't talking about genetic or glandular disorders anyway.

Granted there is a very very small minority with such disorders, but the majority of fatties are the way they are because they eat too much, and exercise too little. Simple.

Actually obesity is somewhat genetic. There are genes that code for rate of glucose breakdown, glycogen synthesis, lipid synthesis, lipolysis and all those other metabolic pathways as well as their regulators. Therefore, two people eating the same food and exercising may not loose the same amount of weight. There's also leptin and T hormones which control one's appetite, if anything goes wrong with them then the person will gain weight. So there are genes that pre-dispose for susptibility of weight gain.

Being overweight is also a symptom of several illnesses such as hyperthyroidism, cushing's syndrome, etc.

So although many times people are overweight because they're not eating right or not exercising enough, that is NOT always the case. Our bodies don't always work in the perfect ways we'd like them to, and it wouldn't be fair if we automatically judged someone by their appearance when infact we don't really know what's happening inside.

p.s. I'm in no way promoting obesity, but just wanted to make clear that sometimes it does have a genetic/medical reason.

Exactly Mr. Rob, there is no fat gene, a person is sexy if they look healthy. Healthy is neither underweight nor overweight and you can tell by looking at a person if they are healthy. If you don't have enough respect for yourself to try and stay healthy then you can't possibly have enough confidence to be "sexy."

Can I just point out that there is NOT a "fat gene". Fat is there purely because someone is taking in more calories than they are using. Simple. Fat does not materialise out of nothing, and neither does muscle turn to fat if not used (another one of those daft urban legends).

Excess fat is only there because of a poor diet and not enough exercise - I should know, I'm a lardy git myself :)

I dont think that accepting that someone may be fat and sexy is promoting it, no one is going to go out of their way to become fat..However its just stating that some "fat" women can be sexy because they have the confidence in themselves to accpet themselves as they are.

I would be more concerned how society and media promote thin is good and if your arent thin then you are 'ugly and not sexy", especially to the young teenagers who have fat genes and no matter how hard they try to diet and excercise they still remain with a lot of fat on their bodies. To me thats a slap in the face for these young girls.

My niece is in this group and has been dieting since the age of 11, and till this day struggles with her weight, even though shes not a big eater.

Just because someone isn't stick thin or all muscle, doesn't mean they aren't intelligent, kind, helpful, and a lovely person. Never judge a book by its cover because you will always miss the best part.

I do have to say that I disagree with your opinion 100% on the fat people being lazy and a slob. Just because your opinion is that, doesn't mean they are that. Guess I'd rather see someone who is overweight and happy with themselves, even IN a miniskirt, than someone who is constantly and continually worrying about what they ate, how they look, who is looking at them, are they pretty enough, think enough, etc...THAT is a mental illness.

People who are overweight have to overcome folks with your attitude every day. In the workplace, stores, everywhere. Have you ever seen someone be discriminated due to being too thin?? I haven't..but I have seen the reverse...over and over again and its just not right. You talk about how bad it is to discriminate, but you are doing it just in talking about weight. Might want to check youself in the discrimination department on that one.

I just don't see how you can "diagnose" someone who is what you consider fat and confident, and is wearing a minskirt and tight top, as trying to hide their insecurities with attitude. Guess if you look at it like that, then those skinny women who wear tight miniskirts, little tops that show skin and bones, women who are trying to hide THEIR insecurities by trying to be sluts. All depends on your point of view...

Well I understand the desire and promote the idea of moving away from the aneorexic/bulimic/skeletal image of women, I DO NOT promote the idea of going in the opposite direction. Fat is Fat, it's disgusting and gives the impression that the person is just lazy and a slob. Confidence is not everything, if the person were truley confident and comfortable with themselves they would care enough about themsleves to eat healthly and excercise. So called "fat and confident" fat women who go out and strut their stuff in mini skirts and tube tops letting their wobbly guts hang over the front of their jeans are just trying to hide their insecurities with attitude. Guess what? it doesn't work.

A long time ago, the rounded female form was considered very sexy...as it was also in ancient times. That was due to the fact that they were considered good child bearers. Also that they had enough to eat, so hence were a bit wealthy.

Since the 1960's when Twiggy came on the scene, the anorexic/bulemic body shape has taken the limelight. For those that think overweight is unhealthy, consider this..

Anorexia leads to heart failure, loss of menstrual cycles, hair loss, and kidney failure. Bulimia does the same, but add in esophageal ulceration, and teeth deterioration, from vomiting on purpose.

This body issue has seriously affected the young women (and men, now!) for the last 30-40 years and doesn't show a sign of stopping because everyone wants to look like the models on tv and magazines. But seriously take a look at those women...most look like something from a concentration camp..all bones and jutted angles with bad skin color.

Yes, obesity does have bad health issues attached to it, but those are not done purposely to gain a "look". Anorexia and bulimia, are. Read up on how models, actresses and dancers stave themselves because the agency says they are "too fat"..when they are borderline dead to begin with.

Most men I know prefer to have someone they can hug and not feel like they are hugging a skin covered skeleton..they prefer curves and something they can actually hold on to.

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.
