Or "Shuwai Shuwai" what does it mean? Who uses it? Why is it driving some crazy?

Ok, if all the reasoning I'm getting is that you hate this sign because it's irritating or you're not used to it, then I cannot help anyone with that, no further explanation is needed.

Get over it!

Slow drivers are irritating as the speedy ones, but not as dangerous, slowly slowly driving is a slow killer ..:)

Oh, is this why everyone is mad about this sign, because it's associated with driving? as in slowly slowly?

are clogging the roads in Doha. Honestly, most of the time I feel I have been dropped into the middle of a bad driving school with all these little Nissan Sunny cars crawling along at 40 kph. UGH.

it IS cultural.

I think it's a bit informal and inappropriate for office.

I find it irritating when this gesture is used in offices or shops. To me, the user is just dithering - in most cases.

By chmb• 18 Jun 2009 00:08

Those are used in different contexts - again, it is just my opinion - doesn't make me right, it's just an opinion. That's all

By Happy Happy• 17 Jun 2009 23:56

How about the "call me", or "keep your fingers crossed" hand gesture, would you consider all of body language rude?

Why do you smile at someone then?

I haven;t seen this one used in other cultures, but it doesn't matter what culture i'm in, i don't know why i just don't like the hand gesture - i think it can be disrespectful, but again, that is my opinion, and it could just b the way i interpret it even if it is not like that ...

I've been here almost my whole life, and i still find it rude, as do a lot of people, but it's a matter of opinion

By shoeaddict• 17 Jun 2009 23:28

maybe if its used to correct a wrong?

or to settle an argument?:(

By Happy Happy• 17 Jun 2009 23:26

I understand that new people to the region may not understand it at first, they primarily would think it's a rude sign, and it's not. After they've learnt what it stood for, why would still be hot boiled about it still?

ive seen other people at work, using the shuai-shuai hand gesture and ive used it a couple of times too,,,,specially if im being flocked by a dozen people in our shop and found it highly effective!!!

its almost the same as shuai dagiga or shuaia,,mama or shuaia baba,,,shuaia okti or aku...

with emphasis on the mama, baba, aku or okti,it gives me a chance to finish my previous commitment and smoothly transitioning to the next.and i find it respecting to the person im talking to.

I have to agree with Dude - It really aggrevates me, I know a lot of people cannot stand it too. For some reason it really grinds on me

Xena, it is indeed a good replacement for "the finger', as this can get you in jail....

And howwwwwwwww many many many many many times when driving do you just feel the urge to 'finger' somebody to death?

I stopped counting.

in all you said, however, I love using it when sitting in traffic and dingbats are hooting behind me to move:-)

Ow Silvia,

Sure, I never really complain about these things to strangers. I just let it be.... sure.

However, my staff will not get away with it. They will be kindly requested not to do that.

the dude:

when the first time i got this gesture i was wondering myself wht is the meaning of tht.

but come one dude, not all ppl having the same way thinking like u. u dont have to b sad about it, b cool its all depend on how u see the situation.

beside its common well know gesture use it by peoples here. so TIG dude.....and u have to start get use with this gesture.

By anonymous• 17 Jun 2009 20:10
anonymous

Yes Silvia...

Why the gesture when you know how to say the word.

To me the gesture means:

"I do not give a shit, you wait"

Even worse... when in a hurry.

But I guess Asians and Arabs use non-verbal communication way more then Westerners do (except the Italians/Mediteranians)

By anonymous• 17 Jun 2009 20:07
anonymous

Because it is non-verbal communication and it usually encountered in work, thus stress, situation. And if I want to have something done I want to hear

"Yes, will do it straight away",

"No problem, first thing on the agenda"

"Done Deal"

Or

"one minute please, we are busy now but will get to it later"

By Silvia Abdullah• 17 Jun 2009 20:07

i wonder the same

y u r so upset about it?

this gesture used it in too many occasions and places. so tell me the situation when this gestures given to u?

i used this gesture to tell them to b patience.

Happy Happy...

Thank you, that was the topic you promised to place yesterday.

It is the most annoying sign ever. Even though I understand the cross-cultural elements, and understand it's origin, I should, maybe, not want to break all three fingers when receiving the sign....

Howeverrrrrrrrrrrr...........

I WILL NOT ACCEPT IT. On this subject, willingly and knowingly narrow minded, screw it!!!

:-P
