Smoking in Public places

I was wondering if there are any others who don’t feel comfortable with smoking in public places. I can hardly sit to enjoy a coffee at any decent coffee shop only to find myself under attack by clouds of floating cigarette's smoke in spite of the ban on such practice by a law issued by the proper authorities. Does anyone share the idea that the aforementioned law should have more teeth to defend our right in a cup of coffee without the free delivery of cigarette's smoke perfumes and cancer? If anyone knows of any cafe's which has Wi-Fi net and prohibit smoking please share the info, as the sip of Espresso in a cigarettes free cafe' is becoming more like a fantasy to me!

Regards

Just stay way from the smoke. No one owns the public places except the government. If they will allow it then, no one can stop the smokers too.

The idea I got from ur first post Xena was as if u r denying the fact that many people do smoke in cafes where it's not allowed, and not giving a damn care to the banning law or the inconveniences they cause to others around ! .. But if that wasn't what u meant then I take back my assumption of u being a smoker .... fair play? :)

You are right though, law has no teeth, or the people that suppose to enforce it.

this takes me to a french word saying (les nouveau riche) - (The New Rich People), the problem is that as you are saying (they do believe they are above the law) and the problem is that the police itself doesnt deal with them!

I have been in Doha for a week now and i swore not to buy any car after i saw how they drive! things are really crazy over here!

Cheers,

Fadi

Over in the Gulf the vast majority of 'locals' are above the law or think they are. Then we have, Indians etc working in the cafes etc who cannot make them obey the law. Then we have the Police who to be honest are next to useless.

So, it is always going to be. There will be smoking when it is not allowed.

I have lived in Dubai for 4 Years, and only by last year that the smoking ban law was approved.

Since then, it was really rare to see someone smoking inside the malls, and even then, the security guard will approach immediately that person (whatever was his nationality) and ask him to stop smoking, municipality warnings were firm and huge (talking about 5000 Dirhams per warning). So in general the law worked perfectly over there!

As for Qatar, what i have noticed is that the security guard would run over an Expat asking him to turn off his cigarette, while he wont even bother himself getting close to a Local Citizen to ask him to do so! After all, i do believe its all due to the Low Educational Profile! and at the end, when someone sees Local People smoking, how can an Expat abide by the rules?

The law over here has been implemented since 2002 yet till now, nothing was done! Official should take serious measures towards this problem if they want to go forward with the law, other wise, take off the signs from the malls and lets stop laughing!

As Yaraaoude said, you go to City Center, goi straight to coffee cottage and take a camera with you! last night i took the most hilarious picture ever, with a guy smoking straight under the No Smoking sign!!

As for asking for a non smoking caffee you can try Caffe Najjar, Ramada Signal, Al Muthana Complex (straight facing Jarir Library) they have two floors, one is for non smokers and the other is for smokers!

Cheers,

Fadi

it happens, it is their country after all. It is wrong, they are breaking the law, but what can we do? Nothing.

most cafes are now getting the drift. Dulce in Villagio has not allowed smoking for ages, ditto for the adjacent to it.

However, to be honest, there should be some Cafes that allow smoking.

If there is not one cafe in each main shopping area I suspect the 'locals' will get the law rejected and it will be smoking again anywhere that people want.

I am a smoker by the way and I would love sometimes to have a fag after a meal or with a tea. However, I won't break the law.
