Cologne is in Germany.

I suppose thursday evening is the day when most of this stuff disappears from the shelves at the local hypermarkets out here

Hmmm...how much is the cheapest bottle of cologne at Lulu?

By britexpat• 6 Oct 2012 20:08

Doesn't Cologne have more alcohol content than normal beer ?

By marycatherine• 6 Oct 2012 19:28
marycatherine

It's not in the far north.

It goes on across Canada amongst alcoholic communities. This practice is not restricted to specific ethnic groups or communities, just a dependancy on alcohol no matter the form in comes in.

Wonder which is the preferred brew, Blue Stratos, Brut or Old Spice? I guess the cheapest since they are drinking it. Would it be possible to ever get a taste for it? The people who drink it must have the best smelling pee ever.

Never heard of people in canada drinking cologne, I'm curious to know as well. In which province do they resort to this....

By qatarisun• 5 Oct 2012 23:07

yeah RC, and also in Yukon and Northwest Territories.. :)

^In what part of Canada are people opting to drink cologne on a regular basis? Nunavut?

By marycatherine• 5 Oct 2012 13:30

I am from Canada and to the poster who mentioned home brew - that is tightly controlled for spirits as well. Brewing beer and wine from kits is allowed in the home, anything stronger is banned.

You don't need to import anything to brew your own, it's all here.@Britexpat I also lived in Saudi and drank the home brew,it knocked your head off for sure.lol

By britexpat• 5 Oct 2012 11:14
britexpat

I'm surprised more people don't brew their own. It is the norm in Saudi. Mind you, whilst it's cheap, it can also be lethal :O(

RyanCanuck

Mary, what country are you from?

By anonymous• 5 Oct 2012 11:08

Is it legal to brew your own here? I guess that it would be OK to import the gear and ingredients needed. It would not be like you are importing booze itself and it would still be in your villa bubbling away creating alcohol - just like my fruit bowl on the table.

Strange in Canada also they resort to drinking cheap cologne when liquor shops are on strike. I know many who prefer Home brew which is dirt cheap and better.

By marycatherine• 5 Oct 2012 10:28
marycatherine

Ryan it's a fairly common practice worldwide. Whenever the liquor outlet employees in my province went on strike all the local shops that carried cheap cologne would take it off the shelves and put it behind the counter to prevent the alcoholics who were desperate from buying it to drink.

Yeah exactly Krisp - Its more or less like the apartheid system they had in South Africa. Funny how some guys can have it and others just cannot though they want it sooooooo much

All one needs is a salary certificate. No need of NOC from Company.

I want to get the license I ask my company admin they said they do for the big position people only.. I think he will be happy or proud to do that because he can manage to hold on to his chair and not to lose the job by kiss the boss ass.

By anonymous• 4 Oct 2012 11:41

That is illegal what you suggest but many Qataris send their drivers in to get their booze.

By Good old joe• 4 Oct 2012 10:42

Do they have something called "Happy Hours" at the QDC where guys without a permit can get in and get a few bottles for the weekend by showing his local id or perhaps wait by the side of the road and expect a kind and understanding permit holder to pass them a few of the bottles for a consideration.

They tried to open one at The Pearl last year, but it was only opened for 20 minutes before being shut down, never to reopen.

I might write to the council and mention that there is a large vacant lot just down the road from my place in which a QDC would be perfect. Then when I run out of beer I could just ride my 3-wheeler bicycle down to pick up some more. I think I could fit at least five boxes in the back basket.

It is always a struggle to get to the current QDC and back on it. Especially when riding along the express way in the emergency lane. But people are very friendly and understanding because they always toot and wave (some type of Arabic wave) to me. On the way home if I am thirsty, I just reach back and crack open a beer, and again the nice people of Doha react with the friendliness we have all come to expect, tooting, waving and yelling out hello in Arabic - at least I think it's hello.

Or they could try something a bit different and let the supermarkets sell beer. They could put it in a seperate section with a curtain so people who are not supposed to drink do not get tempted.

By RyanCanuck• 4 Oct 2012 07:23
RyanCanuck

^Maybe it's time for a second to open?

By anonymous• 4 Oct 2012 07:11

QDC is a place of worship and only the faithful are allowed in. It is the holy or holy places so much more so than the temple on the mount.

Let the amber nectar flow but I wish they would stop handing out so many cards it is too busy now.

By Bachus• 4 Oct 2012 07:08

The QDC is also the only legal source for pork. Try telling your hubbie that you will make him a bacon sandwich if he gets a license.

Don't have a license...and my husband will not apply for one. He's not a drinker. I enjoy a drink occasionally.

lost-in-qatar, what stops you from having one?

By qatarisun• 3 Oct 2012 23:40

you have to get a NOC from your company, stating your basic salary and allowances. You will have a limit for the monthly alcohol purchase, 10% of your basic salary.

You will have to make a deposit of QAR.1000.

By RyanCanuck• 3 Oct 2012 23:26

^I heard they have managers who get them cheap liquor from Qdc, but who knows. I doubt many are drinking cologne.

By Good old joe• 3 Oct 2012 23:25
Good old joe

Just wondering if drinks and beers are available at QDC then why do the poor guys at the industrial area have to make do with drinking cologne, lotion, etc to see their fridays and holidays through or is it that it is okay for some guys to drink and not for the others

By lost-in-qatar• 3 Oct 2012 23:24

QR 1000.00 deposit, returned when you hand in your card. I just had to have a letter from my employer. There is a limit on how much you can spend in a month, but I don't know anyone who can drink QR7,500 worth of grog in 30 days!
