Some People here are really bad.. :(

Just want to share this very unfortunate incident that happened this morning to one of our fellow Qler celia_j (with her permission to put her name)...

Accordingly, this morning around 10 A.M., my friend was about to go to their supplier (her being for the sales) along with her fellow installer, but their company driver decided to stop by one newspaper stand along Bin Mahmoud to buy a paper. While they are at stop, a toyota white camry stop beside them and a man wearing a thobe knock the back side window where celia was seated asking her to go out of the car and ride with him....

Surprisingly, celia ask "why"..but the man shout at her and demanded from her to get out of the car and transfer to her car (in arabic), he even claim that he is a police!..her companions feared the man and ask celia to go to his car...she went, but ask her installer colleague to come with them, the colleague seated in front while celia sat at the back..which made the guy more furious and kept on shouting at them in arabic.. driving around mannai r/a..all that time she was trying to explain to this man that she was about to go to work and asking what he needs...

seeing that they were driving near her office, she pleaded to drop them there and explained that he can verify with their office everything...that time, my friend was already crying and afraid with all the shouting that this man is giving while driving... when he stopped the car infront of their office, she immediately run out of the car but before she could do that, this azz guy hold her knees and smirk!

inside the office, the guy followed her there and was met by her arabic sponsor..the two of them talked and shouted..the guy claimed that he saw her with a guy at the back of the car (which celia denied and clarified with her employer)....

trust me its not only the Filipinos that are targeted. No woman can smile at other motorists without getting followed. I'm having a really tough time with that because I ALWAYS smile at other folks...but in Qatar, that almost always ends up with someone following me in their car. Best trick to end that is drive to the closest police station and go inside...they always disappear.

Celia...or anyone else for that matter...if that ever happens to you...ask for his badge number, call 999 and ask if this person is an officer...and if so, tell him that you will FOLLOW him to the police station in YOUR car, and deal with the officials there...NOT in his car.

Just because the guy was wearing a thobe doesn't automatically make him a Qatari...but his actions DO make him a pervert.

Owen..thanks for posting this and making us aware of the situations out there....maybe you saved someone's life by doing this...

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to run into the ones I do,and the eyesight to tell the difference.

UkEng, how true. but what confuses me is why only filipinas are targetted. i mean, c'mon don't tell me females of other nationalities are covered, non-smiling, holy ones. :)

The reason why more Asian women are targetted is twofold (1) as a group, they tend to be classified with those who are prostitutes (I'm not saying that only Asian women are prostitutes - goodness, in my country they'd be the exception in that "profession"). In this part of the world there are many Asian prostitutes unfortunately - and most of those have been forced into it (another topic for discussion) and (2) they are less likely to cause any trouble or make a scene because they are afraid of the locals - afraid of losing their jobs, afraid of being accused of prostitution and then prosecution and then jail and then deportation.

As a white western female - I don't have those same fears because the police will tend to take my version of events as more "believable" than an Asian woman in the exact same circumstances(see reason 1 above). It's unfortunate but true in this country and the GCC as a whole.

That's why I counselled Celia to try and get a Westerner's attention to assist her if she finds she needs help again. I'll tell the pervert where to get off and call the police and support her side of the story.

He might have had some success in the past...

I shudder to think what would have happened had the Installer guy not got in the car with her!!!

He must be the same guy who poses as CID and fleeces the "Private Taxi" guys.

arecel.. I have to agree that the pinoys that i have met in Qatar are one of the friendliest people around. Very polite and well mannered.

They are also soft targets because they can do any jobs from a domestic maid to a high profile office job, nursing etc and are very polite.

But what amuses me is that some people have labbled them and made their own unfound images of them, just because some of them might be the bad eggs..

UkEng, that's because they think that just because we, Filipino females, smile at them , they think we like them and are easy. arghhhhhh...what are we supposed to do when we see a stranger, cry? stupid... and why should we like them? they hardly take a bath and are smelly! another arghhhhhhhh.....

Or it this type one who force one into the cars..

At the end of the day, both cases the intentions are the same?

And I forgot to add that I get mistaken for a Filipino all the time so they dare to try and bully me.

NB: I said "try".

I suppose generally, SOME men are the same everywhere in the world and would use force and threats when they are not capable of winning a woman over.

Things are changing in Qatar for the better - I've been told that it's certainly better than a few (3-4) years ago - but things could be better.

The authorities have to really look into this. esp. since more countries are looking into investing here, people are certainly noticing and looking at Qatar. Even if the media is muzzled, how far can that go? Electronic means of communication connects the world. Word certainly gets out. So they need to keep ensuring that the word that gets out is positive.

Having said all of the above, Qatar is still GENERALLY safe. That's the operative word.

This isn't just a female issue either. Young expat kids (both boys and girls) are also subjected to this type of harrassment and they are even less able to take the needful defensive actions - after all, don't we teach our children that the "police are our friends".

It happened last month to a child of a friend - tell your kids to not assume that it really is the police just because they say they are.

WHY SHE GOT IN TO A STRANGER CAR? AS LONG AS SHE WAS INSIDE HER CAR SHE COULD HAVE SAVED..

By marycatherine• 25 Feb 2009 20:41

Gee Deeejay - guess you've never been a female in a position where you felt helpless. But as you say use 999 and call the police. If bozo is really a policeman, he won't have a problem. If he's a pervert, you will have the police there to arrest him.

Celia, as I said before. Make a lot of noise. If you feel you must get out of your car, get out on the opposite side to his. Start yelling. As if you are crazy. Ask anyone in any car close by to help you LOUDLY. I am a female white western woman and I'll help you. This guy is an a hole of the worst. He can be found in many parts of the world in many different guises.

Here in Qatar, these a holes try to pretend they are the police - never believe them until they produce proof. If necessary, tell your driver to go to the nearest police station. Tell the pervert that's where you're going, take his number plate and file a complaint.

Please protect yourself and your friends, tell them what to do in this situation.

I don't even bother looking at them, pretended they're not even there. Even one psycho called me a "bi*ch", I just smiled with uber sarcasm.

Just give them the mean face.. that'll put them off. If you're always smiling and accommodating, that's another thing for them.

First Im glad you're safe. Second you should never get into a strangers car, like marycathrine said just scream your head off in public and he will run away like the coward he is. Also since you mention he wanted alcohol this shows you hes one of those rotten Qatari's. Most Qatari's I know wouldn't hurt a fly, and would help anyone in need. I'm very sorry this happened to you Celia, but I can't say I'm surprised. Certain "nationalities" are more vulnerable to this type of treatment than others.

If it happens again (or to any other person) stand in the middle of the street and scream - I can guarantee he will leave and quickly especially as this happened (I think?) at a busy time of day. If there is a car with a white westerner nearby, ask for help. Perverts are loathe to take on people who are willing to stand up for themselves or for others.

Call 999 and give the number plate and ask if this is a police officer (real police officers shouldn't have aproblem with this).

I have had national friends take on other nationals on behalf of asian women who were being harassed - unfortunately, they have to be in "the right place" at the right time. Not always an option.

Standing in the middle of the street and yelling especially when it is busy will get other people's attention and usually scare off perverts - but be sure to get his number plate and report him. If necessary, PM me his number plate and I'll report him.

Always take the car number, ask for the police ID and call 999 if in doubt.
