spin off: Islam does not sanction wife beating. Period.

I made a new post in case some read the Dr Phil post and were too turned off to return. The following link is an alternative analysis of the infamous "wife-beating" surah of the Q'uran. This just goes to show that Muslims of the 21st century should not feel bound by the interpretations of male scholars from the early middle ages. What may have been appropriate for those times does not necessarily apply today. It doesn't mean they are wrong- it is just a different era.

to be honest, despite some of the hoo hah that went on in the thread about this subject, I suspect everyone of us would agree with your father wholeheartedly. :o)

Spoke to my father about this and he agreed and said that wife beating is haram and in no way condoned.

using the word slave today ... might have had a different meaning than back in those times...

as i recall a slave in modern terms is one who does all your work around your house and is given a room and board and food... sounds like a house maid.

the term slave 1400 years ago... is more like the modern lower wage construction worker of today... because even slaves during the construction of the pyramids of egypt were paid... may it be they were paid just barely enough to survive but ... isnt that just minimum wage of today...

so the quran is probably trying say that no matter what social status you should still have some respect... i highly doubt its telling you to get you a slave...

just my opinion

If you are the 'protector' of a child you shouldn't be hitting them.

It reminds me of the issue of slavery. The Quran has specific regulations regarding how to treat slaves, therefore are we to assume slavery is ok today? It was apparently an economic necessity (all over the world)1400 years ago...does that mean we must allow it in 2007? Just because it was considered useful back then doesn't prohibit us from deciding it is not appropriate or moral today.

Burning the bras in the 50's changed many theories iman, and had major consequences on our lifestyle.

Also had serious consequences for my bust! :P

and thank you for enlighting us.

The contraversial issue at these times (1400 after the dawn of Islam) is: is it still valid that "Men are the protectors and maintainers of women?"

In some countries you are even not allowed to 'hit' your own kid because he/she has the right to call the police, EVEN when you are the 'protector & maintainer' of this kid.

Some women these days are even earning more than men (although money & material things does not necessarily qualify you to be a 'protector/maintainer') and they disagree totally with the concept of male 'protector/maintainer'. It is considered as a sign of female weakness. Some even decline the male offers of a seat in a crowded bus, carry the heavy loads of shopping, opening the door...etc.

Burning the bras in the 50's changed many theories iman, and had major consequences on our lifestyle!

Going back to the (still, somewhat) simple life in some countries (example middle east) where women are not as independant as men, who will be taking care of a single elder woman (say 60 years) who has not been lucky enough in finding a husband & raising a family? Her parents? If they were dead, then her brothers who already have their own families? Those houses for the elders? Are they accommodated similarily to those in Europe, for example? Is this when muslims are bound to be 'protectors & maintainers' of women?

"Be strong but not arrogant

Be modest but not weak"

Thank you I think I have been out in the woods too long lol.

I don't know if they give prizes but someone just cut your thread short, I am not sure if I would stnad for that lol.

However, it was a very daring thread considering the amount of ladies on QL but made a lot of discussion and from some a lot of hot air lol.

Oooh, do they give out prizes for the longest threads?

Canarybird, a spin-off is something which is related to the original topic but not quite the same.

For example, on TV, ' Private Practice' is a spin-off of 'Greys Anatomy' in as much as one of the characters who was on the latter is now starring in the former.

Clear as mud?

Were you getting a prize for that. What does spin off mean, I am afraid I don't know.

I haven't quite read it all yet, but have saved it in the 'little folder' I created called 'Religious Discussions'! I seem to be amassing a lot of reading in that folder! :D
