Strange Accident!

Hello People,
Today early morning , as I was driving to office ..a car started flashing its lights behind me, as usual i didnot give any response, they were irritated and kept doing untill finally overtook me, in the signature exchange of looks, i realized both of them are wearing uniforms, the guy indicated me to pull over. Which ofcourse I did :) and I was sure i didnot overspeed/voilate rule.
Both of them were in military police (not traffic) and were driving personal vehicle, both of them couldnt speak english (like myself) and it was a communication mess. I asked them to show me their IDs which they did.
They claimed that a small pebble/stone flew off from the back of my car tire and hit their windscreen, which i didnt agree as i never saw that car coming behind me
They insisted to give them my ID number etc. Which I denied!! but i gave them my phone out of courtesy. Got call from police station (not traffic) who are insisting to give them my ID

Any legal advise?? Anyone has any prior experience.??

don't they have autoglass or similar here to repair chips. everything seems very drawn out n awkward here.

Take someone who speaks arabic, and give them a copy of your id ..if they insist, not the orginal ..

of the stories here are... instead of driving your car... walk ahead of it and find all the little random stones that might possibly be kicked up by your tyres and chip the ding bat's car that is tail-gating you;-P

Glad it got sorted TG!

Just wanted to throw in my 2c on my experience with this. I was in the opposite position where I had a stone kicked up off a truck that cracked my windshield. As per Qatar law, you can not get repairs without a police report. I had to go to the police station to file a report and still my insurance made me pay out my deductible plus % of years of devaluation. I ended up having to pay nearly 2000 riyal out of my own pocket for a new windshield and it sucked!

They were probably trying to get your details for the police report so they can take it up with your insurance company.

Always remember there are two sides of the story. It sucks, but just the same as you its not their fault and I am sure they dont want to pay out of their own pocket for the repairs. Give them your details and let the insurance companies sort it out.

It has happened to me during my first month in Qatar. Police came & gave decision in the other driver's favour. My Insurance paid the repair of the other vehicle but I didn't have to pay the QR 100/- Fine.

It has happened to our fellow QLer, "UKEngQatar" on Messaied road as well. He had to visit Police Station quite a number of times & finally got sorted that out.

It would've happened to so many others... and the common thing is...it would be mostly the locals in the other car. (No Generalization/Racism intended/Aplogies in Advance) :P

TailChopper, I don’t think you're responsible for that miss happening on the road...But I would like to share an incident here;

Once I was behind a truck, loaded with pebbles...on the turning a small stone stroke to windscreen of my car and left a hole and a big crack there...I thought it was my own luck and that’s it.

But I was told by a friend that the traffic law says in this situation;

‘The truck driver would be held responsible as he did not cover the loading properly’

Dont give your ID...go to police station and tell them that you cannot control road debris.

Be sure to mention that the two people behind were driving mere inches from your rear fender while you were at the speed limit.

Why should TC accept responsibility for something which is unavoidable. He didn't personally place the stone on the ground and drive ensuring he aimed for the car behind him!

take my advice ..

if its a matter of insurance or small fine is not a big problem ..

but deal with things in an easy way rather than being in a problem with the police .

if they were real, why didn't you get off from their way, there could be any emergency!

By Hamad 7151• 9 Feb 2011 13:31
Hamad 7151

In my point of view :

1- You deserve a traffic fine for ignoring the flashing lights and act very cool while someone might need the 3rd lane more than you .

2- Their insurance should fix their windscreen and not you

3- I suggest you should pay their police station a visit and see whats going on and from there submit your report as well .

We have an arabic saying :

Dont steal , dont be afraid :)

D4W ,no one can bully me i can assure you that :)

but I just found a legal way.... My admin manager has cleared things up for me,(who speaks arabic) they were trying to claim insurance privately not officially, and provision of ID number is considered agreement to the incident. So i have to be indifferent to any of their claims, :)

A number of Expat have been conned by this well know technique including UkEngQatar, in the above link posted by Bluepanther

This is well known scam by the locals to get money off you Insurance. My advice is inform your Inusrance staright away and refute their claim by going to the Police and explaining, otherwise you will get vilation against you name plus they will get money from your Insurance meaning that you loose your No claim bonus. Contact your Insurance right away and go to Police station without delay.

Flying small stones from the tyres of a running car is normal and even if it hits and break the windscreen of another car it is not considered as an accident. Nobody can avoid as thre will be small stones here and there which nobody will notice while driving.

How did you recognize that the call you recieved was from the Police? It could be a fake call to get your ID number. Something is fishy. Vehicle accidents are to be reported to the Traffic Police.

if they were in uniform, you didn't see their name-badge? then you could report them to capital police.

TC, something fishy is going on... Why did the Police called you, Why not Traffic Police...

TC, just Punjabi style entry is enough for them.... ;)

Why do they need ur id?? If it is to slap any violation or accident claim on ur car, isnt ur car registration no enough for them to find out ur details??

And U say police called you, not traffic.. something doesnt sound right.
