An Egyptian student cut off his genitals after he suffered from depression because of the hard secondary class lessons, newspapers reported on Monday.

Michael Majdi, 18, was rushed to hospital with serious bleeding in the genitals after using a knife to cut off his organ, they said.

They quoted school management sources as saying Majdi was in a state of depression because he was under great pressure in class.

“He was always complaining of the hard lessons…he was having private lessons at home and this made it worse for him,” one source said.

I hope that he recovers fully and goes on to achieve great things.. Anyway, this raises the question :

Are we pushing our kids too hard to compete and achieve excellence ? We hear about Tiger Moms , extra tuitions and student suicides … What say you …

And Qatar is at the low end of the PISA study. Only Kazakhstan performs worse. Congratulations, and joys on this achievement. Well done, Qatar Education Ministry.

mohammed: You make some very valid points..

Look at Finland.. It has probably the best education system in the world..

Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a standardized test given to 15-year-olds in more than 40 global venues, revealed Finnish youth to be the best young readers in the world. They are also at or near the top in Math and sciences..

Two main reasons - Firstly, teaching is valued and to become a teacher requires hard work and dedication. Secondly, students are encouraged not forced to learn...

Education is what is left after you have forgotten everything you have learnt (in school).

Education plays a vital role in the development of the nation, no nation can develops herself without education, but today we have been witnessed that every school management, teachers, and even parents are in new race, every one want there student , child to be first and to score above 95%, below this is not accepted by the society, but the parents are not aware what they are losing, they have been spoiling and snatching the childhood of their children . Earlier, 10 years ago school starts at 9 am and shut at 3 pm and then children had time to play with their siblings and had time to talk with their parents and other members of family but now the everyone is in this race of making their child first. Our behavior changes according to our experiences with people and events in our life. If we have a positive experience with a person, our attitude toward him becomes positive and vice versa. But they are not thinking that this is only the reason for their misbehavior, rude behavior and if parents think that reading books all the time is the source of knowledge then it is wrong , because 400 years ago Galileo had invented telescope, newton discovered gravitational force, Einstein invented electric bulb, so in those days they didn’t have these all books and schools , then it means a human being gain knowledge and experience not only from books, He or she gains knowledge from the environment , from talking with parents, from playing with siblings, and communicate with family and society members bookish education just make human being bank of information but cannot inculcate morals, emotions, feelings it can be develop by participating in various activities. A child can be mentally and physically develop when he or she should involve in other curricular activities apart from bookish education Now-a-days education means to building child to be a robot, children are just reading what information they have in the books but they are not trying to explore, evaluate, interpret any information themselves We need to compete for knowledge and wisdom, not for grades. Knowledge is piling up facts, wisdom is simplifying it. One could have good grades and a degree without learning much. The most important thing one can learn is to "learn to learn." People confuse education with the ability to memorize facts. Education ofthe mind without morals creates a menace to society.
