Thank God for Qatar
I have just passed my two year anniversary for living in Qatar. During these past two years I have made many friends from different parts of the world, learned about Arabic culture and especially Qatari culture. I have learned also about Islam (something I was clueless about before I came here) and have met many, many fine and honorable Qataris that I have done business with and have become friends with.
I also have an interesting job and get well paid for it. I am treated with respect and generosity by my Qatari sponsor and have had the privelege of meeting senior members of the Royal family and the government. Frankly, I am impressed at the excellent job they are doing here in managing a rapidly changing economy and social scene and accommodating the requirements of ex pats from more than 100 countries while at the same time preserving their own cultural values.
My own country is steeped in economic gloom, Europe and Asia are quickly following the United States into recession and many of my friends are facing unemployment. I for one, will not be complaining too much about being in Qatar. Again, I say, thank God for Qatar.
you are soo blessed! indeed, thank GOD for it!... =)
same here.i had the best part of my life in qatar. all good things happend to me in qatar. god bless qatar and its marvellous people

I wish i could say the same , i have also just completed my 2 years of service to this Nice place but unfortunately things have from bad to worse for me and my family in this last year to the point where if i dont leave i will not only lose my family but also my sanity, we where promised all these things before leaving australia and back then in 2006 i said to my wife are you sure that we will get them because and they sound to good to be true and its such a long way to just pack up and leave, anyway upon arriving i was immediately told what i was actually receiving which was less than what i was originally been promised (i should have got it in writing prior to leaving)and then 3months down the the track i was terminated and then force to work with somebody else who did not really want me anyway, then finally when we regrouped again help start a new company , one of our ex employees f@#ks us all over well and truly again feelings of of uncertainty came thick and fast , we then went back to aussie for a short holiday which was not that enjoyable due to the fact that we only received a small amount of monies that where owed to us and then to make matters worse , upon our return from our holiday the company was about to get taken away from us with the help of that ex employee so the spiral continued so far that this year alone i have not even received my full salary for any particular month all i have received are bits and pieces
iam now owed 5 full months of salaries to date and to make things worse i have only just received my id car and license after 2 years , so my experience of Qatar has been absolutely shithouse one , and ive been told by my boss that from now things will get better ,like the check in the mail and pigs can fly , well as far as im concerned if im going to suffer i would like to do it in a nicer place Called Australia
I will keep my comment very civilized for this time only.
I Thank you Jesus for letting me work in the State of Qatar, for meeting and knowing only few true friends from all walks of life and nationalities.
I do pray FOR those that are having a tough time acclimatising to this kind of environment, that they finally find their path and those that are having a hard time coping with the bureaucracy, hardships of the job, daily routine, and cost of living are able to find better green pasture, my best wishes and luck to all.
I Thank you Jesus for the driving style and culture shock from the State of Qatar.
I Thank you Jesus for allowing me to consume once in a while distilled Spirits in a Islamic country.
I Thank you Jesus for letting me work for an American Company and not a local one.
I Thank you Jesus for Qatar living, the mullahs, the good and bad and the ugly...
So where is the party?

Everybody is right everybody is wrong, it depend where you stand
Professor Schama argues that one of the key elements that sustains American optimism is American religious faith.
He says that it is the belief in religious freedom - and in the right of people to choose their own faith, not have it imposed on them from birth - that underlies the American belief in self-improvement and change.
And he says it is "remarkable" that in the US presidential election, it appears that the Democratic candidate Barack Obama is more shaped by his faith, than his Republican rival, John McCain. It would usually be the other way round.
He says that although Americans have a belief in their country as a "city on a hill" - a shining example to others - they are not complacent about the economic and foreign policy issues facing the US.
There is a recognition, he believes, of the real challenges posed by the rise of China as an economic power, and he believes that there will be more conflict over investment in China than immigration from Mexico.
Americans are by no means as militaristic as the rest of the world seems to believe, he says, with the debate about how big the military should be going right back to the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.
But Professor Schama believes that one of America's great strengths is its ability to re-invent itself at the time of crisis.
And at the moment America's self-image is being remade.

Its great to hear from you and I can tell you that you are very much missed here. It would be so great to have you back here with us where you belong.
Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about
I'm not unbanned Novi, I just had to comment on this thread. And there's no such crush, I just wanted to let YOU know that I'm single now so stop trying to set all the eligible bachelors up with your Indonesian friends. :p
Agree with you Fatcat.. If you have USA/UK/etc passport doesn't mean that you will get a high paying job here in Qatar. It depends on your qualification.
Cheers

Heard your wife left you,
How upset you must be.
But don't fret about it...
She moved in with me.
askme, that is a stupid statement you have made. There are USA/UK/etc passport holders that are not highly paid.
There are Asian passport holders that are highly paid and respected.
hi sayang... i am glad u reach your 2 years old with QL. keep writting and miss you so much
Everybody is right everybody is wrong, it depend where you stand
Of course... you will get respected and high pay with that USA passport... Try to hold one of those Asian passport and see, your post will be just upside down.....
Anyway, it depend person to person...
hi all,
i'm new to this fantastic site - i am moving to doha next month, and have been reading ql since september. i must say it's a pleasure seeing this post - makes me even more excited about moving!
wish me luck!
Gypsy, did you just unbanned yourself back to QL? :P
And are you still having a crush on Tigasin's blonde son?
sorry to hijack...but Tess and nadt's avatar is the same!
I will never go easy on your sons Tig, it's too much fun to be hard on them. :P
Yeah. Just keep it coming. . .

janeyjaney, and I'm yet to see you shake your thang, hehe. Must correct this serious lapse in flendheep protocol ASAP.
Why thank you Tigasin, I dance like janeyjaney swings her golf club...

and so can you Labda. That thang of yours was all over the floor! csi

Labda, I haven't seen you shake that thang of yours!! Too bad I missed it!!
I am an honorary Kabayan but only through inclination not through blood lines. Some people claim that I am French but my passport says United States of America and place of birth is New York City.

Have you seen primate dance??!?! dannngggg! She puts Shakira, Beyonce AND all of them wannabes to shame! Plus she's a sweetheart. :)

Tig, It is nice to see what you wrote. Quite a change from the usual moaning & groaning. I came 17 years ago here on a holiday and never left. Have adopted Qatar as my country and never regretted it. Yes ofcourse there are things one misses, and ofcourse things are done differently here, but when you take the whole picture you will see that we are pretty lucky. We should be happy to live in a country where most things are available, where most of us make a good living, have good accomodation and, on top of it, it is much safer than most other countries. And when one gets to know the Qataries, you will notice that they are friendly, courteous and hospitable.

Hi tigasin,
Was wondering if you're a kababayan..Call me lambutin.. j/k ^^;
They say the way to really know if you know something is to teach it to somebody
Vegas, I am really bad in golf. Take me to the driving range and all of you'll go home w/ bruises as I let my club fly after a full swing. That's golf for me... csi
Or over it...
I'm a multi-tasker...
I love beer...
And Tig I bet you can beat her in Golf...

I'm great, thanks.
It's wonderful that you're bringing Primate, she's such a cool person :)
Looking forward to Friday.

Don't even remind me!!! I should have gone even if I was only able to sleep at 3am!
we've closed the 4 Seasons bar more than once.
Mate - when you've recovered from this bout let me know.
I've never been to Skybar (or whatever it's called), so time to get it on.
and I know I will. You were missed last Friday night btw. It was a good night out.
Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about
Aww Tig, you're not even going to try?
I will not participate. I have never beaten Gypsy at anything and even Labda beat me arm wrestling. So I ain't about to start nothin' new.
Also Gypsy, it wasn't just Labda and JaneyJaney that I invited, I also invited a third ringer (she is the Brazilian/Uruguyan girl) and she can also handle a drink although where these girls put it is beyond me.
Go easy on the French sons (they are young and impressionable). As for the German ringer, he is the same size as me so I doubt he will be able to put up much of a fight in any drinking contest.
So, in short, we will just concede gracefully and acknowledge your superiority. Where the hell is Mr Paul when you need him?
Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about

------------Virgos dont like chaos, gerrit? ----------
Damn straight Labda, this B.I.T.C.H for sure needs one, she's sick of begging her friends to be her + 1's, and she may have a free trip to the Four Seasons Mauritius that she needs to take someone on.
charan, where? where? wherrrrrrreee yehi??!
------------Virgos dont like chaos, gerrit? ----------
well, in that case labda, look for 2 and toss one over to me will yah....
Due for a pay rise :o)
This is on top of 15 further years in the middle east. Boy I love this part of the world!
Did you Google it first?
Of course we're going to out drink them, look at who's coming!
Tig: He's American so he can't drink REAL beer
Gumby: Last party I went to with him he stuck to Bacardi Breezers and was typsy off 3
Vegas: It's not vodka so he's lost
Tig's French sons: There French, this isn't wine and they both weigh 90 pounds soaking wet, we've soooo got them.
FatCat's & Alexa's Hubbies: No worries there cause their wives will be keeping a close eye on how much they drink ;)
The only one we have to worry about is the German wildcard who's coming....Hmmmm, granted though he's the same size as Tig's French sons, so he might be a lightweight.
Congrats. and happy anniversary... wish you will stay more years here in qatar
Gypsy- u can take yourself out of QL, but u cant take QL out of you heh?
Hope there r more threads that compel u to participate.
Ahhhh niiiice...I'll spend an extra FULL five minutes in front of the mirror. :P

Actually Labda and JaneyJaney if the last two years I've went to this thing are anything to go by, there's LOT'S of cute boys who attend. Beer = boys after all. :)
charan, boytoys? Have you any spare? :P
------------Virgos dont like chaos, gerrit? ----------
I'll take the boy toy charan as long as he's cute. No point in ugly boy toys. :)

Since when has Tig been cute???? (just kidding Tig :-*)
I'd normally give you two tips so that you don't embarass yourself before your fourth beers but I really am in need of a good chuckle.
Beer alone is just fine. Cute boys like Tig are a bonus. :P
------------Virgos dont like chaos, gerrit? ----------
I know janeyjaney, that's why I said I'd be content with the beer.
No Withnail, we're talking about the one at InterCon.
gypsy et al - are you guys talking about the one at ramada?

haha we want, but I don't know.. too busy to look for any.
There's going to be costumes at this???
It should be a 'women vs. men' drinking challenge. Primate and I are still looking for costumes! csi
Well I must say i understand what You mean when u say Thank you Qatar.. I thought moving here would be hard.. especially when compared to Back home.. but I love it.. and its thx to all the great ppl i met here!!!!

What a breath of fresh air! Thanks for that Tig! I've been in Qatar for 3 years and I shall say it once more, it's not that bad! I am actually enjoying my stay here! Met lots of good people, learned a lot about how it is in this part of the continent and well, there's a lot of things to look forward to everyday! Even if my parents decide to leave at some point, I reckon I'll stay. ;)
6 months n counting...
Charan...Time for some serious bar hopping!!
Lead me not into temptation....I can find it myself!!
It will be 3 years for me in January, and 5 since I left home.

agree on this Tig,... i have lots of misconceptions about Islam prior to coming here which were enlightened now and because of this i feel if only people will be open to learning about other culture and religion, the world will be PEACEFUL to live in...
Tigasin - I just completed 4 years in Qatar and more than 2 years of friendsheeeeeeeeeeeeep with you as well :)
