Thanks to the Nurds (Engineers)

Just wanted to thank the Nerds (Engineers) who thought up and developed the new safety devices we have in our cars today. To explain let me tell you the following;

Was driving home in Germany on Wednesday evening late, was on a 3 lane autobahn, it was quite empty so, as I do when I can, I let the Merc have some exercise. Was doing about 285 when a car driver pulled onto the Autobahn right infront of a truck driver, the problem was the Truck was doing about 90 and the car was doing about 60, the truck pulled out to miss the car, too quickly unfortunately. The truck then went out of control and careared over the autobahn in front of me.

So there I am, truck infront of me across the autobahn and me nowhere to go, took the only route out, braked, steered right and hoped to god that I missed him. Now first the ESP ( Electronic Stabilisation Programm) allowed me to make the move right at that speed without spinning the car, the ABS ( anti Blocking System) on the brakes allowed me to steer and brake at the same time. Didnt quite make it though, caught the back end of the truck with the front left side of the Merc which initiated a spin sequence, which is a very interesting experience at about 250. Then of course we came into contact with the new designed steel Barriers at the right side of the Autobahn, these initially slowed me down after of course firstly removing half the back of the car. Of course by this time the front, side and head airbags had been inflated, an extremely unpleasent experience suddenly been hit from all sides with inflated fabric.
After coming to a stop I collected my thoughts quickly and proceeded to extract myself from the Merc, I think I will always rememeber the look on the face of the car driver as I climbed out of the Merc through the broken side window and his remark.........you are not hurt?
You nameless guys who design and improve these safety systems.........thanks you maybe nurds but I love you all

Applying your post to the general concerns of this forum, I also give credence to the thousands of small expat nurd engineers designers and architects in Qatar.

These are guys who do the nifty work of bringing about everything that is what is generally going up in this town. Most of them are the smiling, nameless face Asians. Greeting each and everyone in different languages. They are height challenged guys with quick small asian steps having to assert themselves in order to be accepted and respected by their tall peers. Toiling hard. They are guys working in big common rooms full of computers. Working towards the general design or concept of the bosses. Making, improving and applying their designs each day to make a better place for the general populace. They are the guys that make sure that buildings will not break and fall on future occupants but nonetheless putting their own lives at risk .

They are the one being paid peanuts while their western and Arabian counterparts earn the big cookie. They are names you will never see in a project billboard in spite of the contributions they have made. They smile silently as they look up in view of “their buildings” in the skies of Qatar.

forgive mefor being to sentimental. Maybe too much instant cappucino is making my head whiz. But I praise this forum and hope that this will give me and my people the respect we deserve.

haha im an early engineering student and I already feel pity for low paid engineers in qatar working at construction sites. Engineers and doctors have to study the most over any other profession but they are not always the best paid.

in Germany unfortunately you see alot of car with children not even belted in, they are climbing all over the place inside the car and without being predudice these are mainly foreign drivers doing it.

If we got safety devices then we should use them

true and thats the reason children arent allowed to sit in the front either, even if restrained, because the airbag can kill them as their bodies cannot handle the force the way adult bodies can.

With the use of Airbags it is actually more important to wear a seatbelt...if you dont the airbag can break your neck when it goes off.

you wont but i can assure you that most people killed in road accidents here were driving at speeds of 100 or thereabouts and are often killed for not obeying those simple rules such as wearing seatbelts or avoiding excess speeds at curves etc etc...in that case not even god(forget ABS /EBD) can help them!!!

again glad you made it safely!

coolquietman.............I still cant beleive that I walked away with a few bruises ( mainly from the Airbags) and of course a stiff neck.

Yeah but in Qatar you wont be doing 285 on a road or?
