More than QR100,000 were raised within 15 minutes after the Pakistan embassy in Doha opened its fundraising drive for internally displaced peoples (IDPs) in the Swat region yesterday.
The community meeting was held as the number of IDPs from the ongoing Swat conflict continues to rise sharply, forcing the UNHCR to call the development one of “the most dramatic displacement crises in the world in recent times”.
“This is the time to show unity with your country and join hands with millions of Pakistanis elsewhere in the world that are contributing,” Pakistani Ambassador Mohamed Asghar Afridi urged his countrymen at the embassy premises.
“I and other officials announce donating one month’s salary towards the fund. Other embassy staff have agreed to chip in with five days’ salary,” Afridi said.
The “Prime Minister’s Special Fund for Victims of Terrorism” was set up by Prime Minister Gillani with a start-up amount of Rs1bn, after the Pakistan Army started Operation Rah-e-Rast in the Malakand Division that includes the Swat region to root out the Taliban on April 26.
The offensive in the one-time tourist valley, has forced at least 1.7mn people from their homes as of yesterday.
Representatives of the Pakistani-run schools, businesses, socio-cultural forums, professionals, academicians and even volunteer officials from the local community website www.qatarliving.com, contributed after the impassioned speech by the diplomat.
Cash donations in local and Pakistani currencies, as well as the US dollar were made by the community members.
One member of the audience even announced to reserve his two apartments in the hilly-resort town of Murree for the needy.
The IDPs, whose number is estimated to grow amidst soaring summer heat, have been forced to live in camp cities that have sprung up in the region with help from the local and federal governments and international aid agencies.

Hmm honestly speaking as we NRPs can mostly see the miserable condition of our SWAT BROTHERS & SISTER on different Pakistani news channels. Very sad....

.

Anyhow,in Qatar I think different pakistani communities/establishments along with pakistanis living in Al Khor,Ummsaeed etc can really contribute alot by submitting their donations (funds / goods) to Pak Embassy.

.

Moreover, Pak Embassy must advertise its campaign at LARGE SCALES on all local Qatari newspapers (English / Arabic) about UBL ACCOUNT & Al Anis Trading providing assistance merely for this purpose.

.

We can arrange MEENA BAZAR type get together of all Pakistanis in Qatar and can submit all the earnings

from it to PAK EMBASSY or UBL Account.

.

Moreover, on behalf of Non Resident Pakistanis (NRP)I would like to request to PAKISTANI GOVERNMENT that why they have to open a new account on every new disaster.

.

There should be one fix account for example "NATIONAL DISASTER/WELFARE FUND" or anything similar so all Pakistanis living abroad can submit their zakar, alms & donations through out the year. Such funds can be used for the welfare of our Pakistan with the condition of transparency & honesty

I plan to send money back home through UBL to my dad's account, and he will be going to the camps next week. So he will deliver the money directly to the people in need.... no more satisfaction. So if you have a relative who is willing to do this much for you and for needy people, nothing like it. But if not, give money to EIDHI, MKR foundation etc. I would preffer not to give it to Govt officials as they all are corrupt. I personally trust Abdul Sattar EIDHI.

Its good that so much is being done for the people displaced. However, I wish if everything intended for these people reaches them rather than coming under the wrong hands.
