They deserve a far better treatment -

I was astonished by witnessing the way authorities were dealing with laborers who gathered in and around alfardan centre/karwa bus stand/souq najada on last Friday. Have seen some people in light blue T-shirt with some arabic writing on back side getting physical ( pushing ‘em punching ) with laborers who were trying to cross bank street. They were neither police nor any official, but a bunch of furious young guys actualy chasing and hitting the workers.

I know the problems of huge influx of these less fortunates coming from their remote work places to doha for their weekend in every Friday and they occupy lots of space out there. They are increasing in numbers every day as qatar’s development dreams gets real blood and flesh.

Am conserned because why doha authorities still deal with them like slaves? Why there is no a proper system to control these situations? If authorities have to control laborer’s mobilization why do they have to get young furious guys to get actualy beating them up? Why there is no a system? If they are not able to organise and control these kind of small domestic issues in the country and going to continue dealing with these poor people like worst than dogs, then i would say doha is too immature to organise/control any and every thing for that matter!!! You know what i mean. Sad but true.

Cheers - Cat

According to the Gulf Times the souqs are reporting an 80% drop in sales on Fridays since this law was enforced. I don't see it lasting for long.

poor treatment in Qatar. Lots of people are recruited under false pretenses by some of the biggest companies in Qatar. They get here and discover the reality of their situation, but then it is made very difficult for them to get out of their position. There is no honesty or equity in this place, only silly people believe that there is.

CAT .. cheers for the post

This is ridiculous!!!.. am sure its the government only.. none would be dare enough to do it. They ddnt want to use the police and get questioned.

I wish someone takes this up and sort out. WE all live in the concrets where they have their sweat drops dried up.

they are the ones building this country... respect them.. give them the freedom to live.. atleast a day a week.

yep good point - where were the authorities? Still what exactly did they think they would achieve by beating these immigrant workers?

I really don't know, hence my question. I suppose one key question is - where were the police when all this happened? Why did they not do anything?

Its sad to witness such things.. They have nowhere to go.

Like you say, many bus in from outer areas for the weekend , to have a break or shop and are treated so inhumanely.

i don't know what the anser is. Perhaps someone could contact the human rights authorities.

its all about system and perception of aspiring doha. if doha want to organise olympics, first let them solve these comparitivly small issues...

"If authorities have to control laborer’s mobilization why do they have to get young furious guys to get actualy beating them up?" Pardon my ignorence but is there any proof that these guys were indeed in the Government's pay or at their direction?

that these people who are probably on a very low income can't gather with their friends to pass the time while they are off work, somewhere that doesn't cost them anything without being bullied.

They get shunted from the malls etc too so what is expected of them?? do they have to stay in their homes on their day off... ridiculous!!!!

I'm lucky i was not passing by Souq najada that day! I would have been mistakenly beaten up!

Punching! Is that right?

What ever happened to their HUMANITARIAN RIGHTS?

I just hope that they are treated fairly. Besides, we owe them their hardwork. They are not earning decently. Imagine not earning enough, but still they strive to live and work.

They deserve respect, too.

Those who hit them, are the animals. May God do justice.

qatar should realise.. laborers are not slaves. they have their life own. if qatar cant tolerate them then they should plan some dedicated places for laborers to gather or something. but there should be a fast solution to this problem otherwise qatar will learn soon.

It is sad, hey. I went to souq last friday and I was astonished to see the same thing. Qatar is too immature to handle these things. They are more focused on "bidding for the Olympics", "trying to be Dubai.." they want to smell fresh and for other countries to be impressed by how they are doing. Unfortunately, no one has a damn clue on what goes on in Qatar.

It is really sad how they treat these laborers.. and also these crimes that are never reported. Qatar will be stuck in a rut for a while if they don't deal with this soon. It's just demoralizing.. to think most of the people here in Qatar are for work.

The government remains apathetic to these issues. Shame.
