Think Twice About Your Online Profile
By Happy Happy •
Folks, I've been warning a couple of my colleagues of their unflattering online profile, photos, and comments on tweets, blogs, and facebook. I'm told it's a democratic world, and I'm wholeheartedly telling you, be careful, you may lose your current job, or not get shortlisted by your prospective employer, and may even subject yourself to persecution, if this online information is easily linked back to you.
Would you add your boss or client as friends on your facebook account? No way...God Forbid...lol
Salaam
...Wow! Mandi, I wonder who's that "boss"?...*wink*
Note: you're greatly missed.
My "boss" is certainly my Facebook friend!
Mandi
......AbuAmerican, good for you, but there're people in the world who wouldn't want their affiliations to be made known to others, not out of fear, as much as it is to avoid discrimination, stigma, threats, brutality......etc.
but no harm in being cautious!
...Khawaga, true, I personally know many of them. Anyway, thanks for visiting my thread...:)
Happy Happy: I believe you will find many, many Americans who share your sentiments.
....Khawaga, please don't get me started on the US administration. I have never disrespected and hated someone as I do resent George Bush. Obama is a breeze compared to that criminal, whom I insist should be dragged to the Hague.
Happy Happy, I fully agree with you that is it common sense. I am merely amused by ntasa's choice of whom to hate and whom to quote, since they appear to be one and the same...
....ntasa, great contribution, thanks. The man spoke the truth...he's trying.
....Khawaga, it's common sense.
ntasa: I thought you hated America? Now you're taking personal and professional advice from the president?
in his own words :

and probably an old link, but good to watch again:

Lolz Happy... Yeah, I do charity :D
....Khattak, you're a free web based e-mail service????
http://www.khattak.com/
LOL
its information overdose..:)
....KHATTAK, Google certainly is mine! it's here under my address bar...:P
I will Google all of you NOW...:))
Hey Guys... I'm not selling Google to anyone.
lol...i will short Google.
if this hobby spreads, I will buy the shares of Google.
...shapil, what have we been arguing about then?...:))
.....A client once told me it's their favorite hobby to search online for each officemate. She even told me she admired a colleague of mine, for being a supporter of certain causes, she agrees to. Then she wondered, "how come there is nothing about you online?, you're very inactive!"...lol
I was still stunned at her "hobby"!
so that the police does not find out about the stolen car :) .. i dont know how many crimes but some ppl learn their lesson the hard way...Happy2 the difference between our views is just a minor nuance...you are saying take precautions...i am saying yes take precautions but try to behave in such a way that you dont have to be paranoid about it. If you dont want something online to be linked to you then dont do it.
....Ok, why have you deleted your avatar then?!! Do you know how many internet related crimes are being committed in our time?
Aside from precautions, have you heard of predators and identity thieves?
People who are not "nasty", who are not double-faced, who dont give out too much personal information would be immune from all this...the thing about creating online data silos is that the more you do it the more somebody wants to find out about them...the more "detective" softwares like key loggers are launched which allows somebody in Russia to see what exactly i am typing right now.
...shapil,I don't understand why for some reason, people mistake preserving their identity for being "nasty"?
We don't really have to be double-faced in the least bit, just don't give out too much personal information.
i agree that these are required precautions but these are just the means and not an end in themselves. The end is when you subject yourself to the same scrutiny online as u do offline. If you really want to come out of ur shell online and do or say things that you would never do offline then try websites like Secondlife...btw is anybody on secondlife?
...Jfast_Jfurious, I have one colleague on my list.I think I should practice what I'm preaching...:)
...Peppermint, you really made me laugh out loud...LOL
My boss added me on his FB. All my officemates said they will all delete me from their friendslist once i approved him! hahahahahaha!
or at least ur seniors at work
The best thing is to never add colleagues in FB and all.. It restricts the extend to which u can be free about whats happening in your day 2 day life to your friends on FB... Though I learned from my mistake only...
... I'm glad most people agree here.
happy u r absolutely rite..... in internet even mails r somthin similar 2 postcards ..... shud b very cautious.... TFS
Yep beware and becareful what you post.
...Oryx, want my opinion? I trust no "privacy settings" anywhere online. Once I've hit submit, whatever data I've transmitted is no longer within my control and now is sitting in someone else's server.
Duhhhhhhh Just create lists on FB - I have two lists.
List One for chums
List Two for limited profile - they have no access to my status or photos
I totally agree with you Happy - I never say anything work negative on FB and check all photos being put up and am careful who takes my photo.
....noms_, smart! even the email ID and your favorite line or slogan shouldn't be commonly shared either. You can be tracked still.
Note: sorry for my late replies, I'm working.
Happy 2, you have scared me enough :)
Good one Happy Happy,,, I'v always followed this since begining.
….That's not Qatar specialty. For instance, you could also be booed and discriminated against professionally and be socially stigmatized, if your online info revealed you're anti-semitic around the world.
yeah happy 2 but better safe than sorry...i heard police does nasty things to you here.
here everything is so matrix that i dont even know who my boss is.
....KHATTAK and Khanan, in a agreement with both of you.
....shapil, don't worry about your avatar, if someone tried to enlarge it, it would get very blurry.
i tell my boss in his face..."u suck!!" and he smiles in a weird way every time...
my cyber life is too personal..
there is no room for official people to fit in here
none from my office, clients are on my list!!

You can still see it? i had already deleted it...somebody could zoom the number and find out that it was stolen :)
Can't delete this account Happy Happy, my boss is cool though but sometimes when I feel like bashing my job, I can't :(
During those tough times, I log in to QL and start troubling people :-P
...shapil, no worries, we cannot make out much of your avatar, but the car looks GOOD...:P
.......whyteknight, YUCK! Cancel your account then subscribe with a new name. I wouldn't even add my current leadership where I'm a member of professional networking sites.
Done...now i can be a nasty QLer just like the rest of you :)
And I will start taking that precaution by removing the real picture of mine from this forum.
Happy my immediate boss added me on Facebook and now I can't post updates about how much my job sucks :(
Got nothing illegal though so I am safe from the law :)
HR managers these days do search for a prospective employee on the internet so not a good idea to have something floating about you on the internet which may put them off.
companies are getting too nosy nowadays. Personnel detective department should be made compulsory in all companies :) but i do think that what ur saying is good precaution to take nonetheless.
explains why no recruiter is returning my calls.
....I saw a couple of awful pics of one of my colleagues, not to mention that she newly subscribed to a group, if found out by the client, she may subject herself to irrevocable punishment.
Very Good Advice.
I always thought so.
However, one big difference between the two is that online you have potentially much bigger audience than offline and there is a log of your activities unlike offline.
i agree real contact info can be a fodder for stalkers and anything inappropriate you do online can come back to haunt you but then....same is true for offline as well.
......Be yourself in both reality and online with your very thoughts, principles, values, and the whole set of who you sincerely are, expect for revealing your full real name, contact info…and enlarged "inappropriate" photos!
i dont care about utopia...i am just not the fan of multiple personalities. i write what i mean, i never discuss my personal affairs on public forums and i dont care who all reads what i write.
Some Employers often check their Employee's Online Activities through their email addresses mentioned in the CV. Its always better not to register on these online communities websites through your regular email ID.
...Digital Utopia doesn't exit, shapil.
if you are the same person online and offline then why bother?
