Think Twice About Your Online Profile

Happy Happy
By Happy Happy

Folks, I've been warning a couple of my colleagues of their unflattering online profile, photos, and comments on tweets, blogs, and facebook. I'm told it's a democratic world, and I'm wholeheartedly telling you, be careful, you may lose your current job, or not get shortlisted by your prospective employer, and may even subject yourself to persecution, if this online information is easily linked back to you.

Would you add your boss or client as friends on your facebook account? No way...God Forbid...lol

......AbuAmerican, good for you, but there're people in the world who wouldn't want their affiliations to be made known to others, not out of fear, as much as it is to avoid discrimination, stigma, threats, brutality......etc.

....Khawaga, please don't get me started on the US administration. I have never disrespected and hated someone as I do resent George Bush. Obama is a breeze compared to that criminal, whom I insist should be dragged to the Hague.

Happy Happy, I fully agree with you that is it common sense. I am merely amused by ntasa's choice of whom to hate and whom to quote, since they appear to be one and the same...

...shapil, what have we been arguing about then?...:))

.....A client once told me it's their favorite hobby to search online for each officemate. She even told me she admired a colleague of mine, for being a supporter of certain causes, she agrees to. Then she wondered, "how come there is nothing about you online?, you're very inactive!"...lol

I was still stunned at her "hobby"!

so that the police does not find out about the stolen car :) .. i dont know how many crimes but some ppl learn their lesson the hard way...Happy2 the difference between our views is just a minor nuance...you are saying take precautions...i am saying yes take precautions but try to behave in such a way that you dont have to be paranoid about it. If you dont want something online to be linked to you then dont do it.

By Happy Happy• 26 May 2010 18:54
Happy Happy

....Ok, why have you deleted your avatar then?!! Do you know how many internet related crimes are being committed in our time?

Aside from precautions, have you heard of predators and identity thieves?

By shapil• 26 May 2010 18:47
shapil

People who are not "nasty", who are not double-faced, who dont give out too much personal information would be immune from all this...the thing about creating online data silos is that the more you do it the more somebody wants to find out about them...the more "detective" softwares like key loggers are launched which allows somebody in Russia to see what exactly i am typing right now.

By Happy Happy• 26 May 2010 18:35
Happy Happy

...shapil,I don't understand why for some reason, people mistake preserving their identity for being "nasty"?

We don't really have to be double-faced in the least bit, just don't give out too much personal information.

By shapil• 26 May 2010 18:28
shapil

i agree that these are required precautions but these are just the means and not an end in themselves. The end is when you subject yourself to the same scrutiny online as u do offline. If you really want to come out of ur shell online and do or say things that you would never do offline then try websites like Secondlife...btw is anybody on secondlife?

The best thing is to never add colleagues in FB and all.. It restricts the extend to which u can be free about whats happening in your day 2 day life to your friends on FB... Though I learned from my mistake only...

Duhhhhhhh Just create lists on FB - I have two lists.

List One for chums

List Two for limited profile - they have no access to my status or photos

I totally agree with you Happy - I never say anything work negative on FB and check all photos being put up and am careful who takes my photo.

Happy my immediate boss added me on Facebook and now I can't post updates about how much my job sucks :(

Got nothing illegal though so I am safe from the law :)

HR managers these days do search for a prospective employee on the internet so not a good idea to have something floating about you on the internet which may put them off.

Very Good Advice.

I always thought so.

By shapil• 25 May 2010 23:03

However, one big difference between the two is that online you have potentially much bigger audience than offline and there is a log of your activities unlike offline.

By shapil• 25 May 2010 22:54

i agree real contact info can be a fodder for stalkers and anything inappropriate you do online can come back to haunt you but then....same is true for offline as well.

By Happy Happy• 25 May 2010 22:46

......Be yourself in both reality and online with your very thoughts, principles, values, and the whole set of who you sincerely are, expect for revealing your full real name, contact info…and enlarged "inappropriate" photos!
