Men stab sister to death in 'honour killing'
By AFP
AMMAN - A Jordanian court has sentenced three men to between 10 and seven years in jail for killing their sister over a "love affair," an official said on Thursday.
"The criminal court yesterday condemned two of them to death but commuted the sentences to 10 years in prison, citing extenuating circumstances," the official said without elaborating.
"The third man was sentenced to 15 years in jail for being an accessory to the crime, but the sentence was reduced to seven years for the same reason," the official told AFP on condition anonymity.
The three brothers, all under 30, had agreed last year to kill the 40-year-old divorced woman from Abu Alanda, in southeast Amman, because of an alleged liaison.
"She was stabbed 15 times. One of them said that the mother of five had a love affair with a man and that he saw pictures of her sitting with the alleged lover," the official said.
"They burned the victim's body and set her house ablaze to cover up the crime."
Murder is punishable by the death penalty in Jordan, but courts usually commute or reduce sentences in so-called cases of "honour killings," particularly if the victim's family urges leniency.
Around 15-20 women are murdered each year in Jordan in the name of honour, despite government efforts to fight such crimes.

exactly brit!
an eye for an eye doesn't take you too far.. other ways must be found.
education, improving people’s culture, enlightening, clarifications, introduction of certain positive images, enforcing of certain behavioral and mindset patterns.. that’s what may lead to improvment of situation, rather than putting everybody to death, which only will create more anger and more hatred.
"And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot."
OR
"An eye for an eye, and the whole world would be blind."
Which one are you ?
Jordan is very retarded country in all aspects, no wondering people aren't educated, poor, leading miserable lives, making themselves busy with some destructive activities rather than with something positive and creative. Lack of education, restricted opportunities, low lifestyle, influence of religion in its worst manifestation and inverted version...here is the result: 1 to 2 women are killed every month due to this stupid invalid reason, which is beyond any understanding and justice!
But death=death as someone has mentioned is not a solution. World practice shows that in the countries where death penalties are highly performed, the crime level is not any lower than in the countries where death sentence is cancelled long time back. There is no any correlation between these two whatsoever.
There is a simple answer, brit: murder is murder, no matter what the reason may be. But, governments which kill murderers are also murderers, because they do just the same that they are trying to punish. No religion allows the killing of a person through another person. And if it does, it isn't worth being called a religion.
and now after the cowardly and terrible crime this brothers committed did they get back their honour or were they after her property and this was just supposed to be a cover up
Agree with britexpat,
They (not just them, but in all countries) --- proper education is the key.
Symapathize with the kids, who is going to look after them, the circle goes on
There is no simple answer. They believe themselves to be beholders of family honour. They have no remorse. So, many would just act as martyrs.
Well until they do the death penalty for such crimes the men won't stop they need to send a clearer message death=death. In this case I think it should be with the same method they used on their sister!
Sad. Old cultural practices. Education and enforcement is the only answer.
